" A demon child summoned by a Nazi ritual, who then grows up to be a paranormal detective...not an easy premise..."

lmao

Just watched the BluRay. Wow, wow wow wow. Although the story is perfectly wrapped up, this deserves a sequel. My inner child squeeled during all the fight scenes because they were exactly how I imagined them to be.

So my brother and I watched it the other day and I'm left confused by all the hype surrounding it...

None of the actors could act, every single male was your typical douchebag, the tension was almost non existant and the ending made absolutely no sense.

I was bored out of my mind watching it and I managed to enjoy crap like Green Lantern

What am I missing?

Mako.

How did the ending not make any sense to you? It was pretty straight forward.

I've watched this movie twice. You're not missing anything. Characters are all vapid, forgettable shit. Plot is perfunctory. The entire point of the movie is big robots fighting big monsters, there's nothing else to it, sadly. And the robot action isn't that exciting either to be honest that I would forgo every other failing. I think people overhyped this one because of the geek factor. Personally, this is Del Toro's worst movie since Blade 2.

Watched it yesterday and I agree. Was a terrible movie. All of the acting was bad. There was 0 chemistry between the leads. The robot and monster effects were good, but there was some really terrible green screen work (especially the end on the ocean) when people were in the shot. Most of the characters were more like charactures. Really really bad.

This movie is about robots fighting monsters - everything in between is fodder. I've seen the movie a total of 5 times now. The script is bad, the characters are bad, the acting is bad. The only thing that's good, is the robots fighting monsters. Which is what the movie promised and delivers.

The fucking awesome robot/kaiju action ?

After MoS and ST-ID it was prety boring tbh.

I mean, yeah, giant robots fighting and shit but I'm neither Luffy, Chopper or Usop, big robots fighting are entertaining when done properly, not just for the heck of it.

And the robots shouldn't have one any of those fights, the fighting scripting was terrible beyond redemption. And people want a sequel? wat?

And the ending made no sense, he shouldn't have been able to return through the rift since he didn't have the Alien DNA signature. Also the rift had 0 reason to allow them through since they were a foreign body and no "kaiju" had come back -ever-

Saw it for the first time. I thought it was a blast. I had great fun watching monsters trash cities and fight mechs while characters threw out fun and cheesy lines

The rocket elbow moment was soo awesome. He called it out and everything!

Jesus, next you guys are going to say Independence Day is a horrible movie.

It's not the best movie ever, but I think it might be easier to re-watch than Pacific Rim just because the acting is damn fun regardless the rest of the movie.

Pacific Rim could have used a bit more charisma from the two main leads.

Wat. Blade 2 was awesome.

I expect this one to become a grating experience on repeated viewings, just like ID4, and that always seems to be due to comic-relief characters. Still, I think it has longer legs than any of the Bay Transformer films, and I liked the kaiju thing they were going for.

I want a sequel, and hopefully it will be a matured experience compared to the first.

I feel sorry for anyone watching this for the first time on Blu Ray in 2D on a small TV with horrible TV speakers / cheap speakers / PC speakers.
They have missed out on 70% of the fun.

Wouldn't surprise me if newcomers to the film see it this way and say it's not that impressive visual/sound wise. The movie was amazing in IMAX.

There's a point to the way the movie and the characters were crafted/directed. Everything was done on purpose. If you listen to the director commentary, you can see him point out every last detail that went into the making of the movie.

The overall story structure and character archetypes is similar to a sports movie, or something like Top Gun where the rookies meet the hot shots, the hot shots get taken out, and the rookie saves the day. This invokes all the usual tropes, but the difference is that Pacific Rim executes this in a way that doesn't insult a person's intelligence like Transformers.

Pay attention to the visual detail, the framing, the light sources, and the choices of color in each scene and how certain characters own certain colors.

While I would be inclined to agree, the actual acting isn't that great and doesn't sell (some) of the characters as being, well, characters. I think Del Toro just picked the wrong lead.

So the terrible acting, the lack of any kind of charisma, the non sensical plot, the uber alpha projections and the fact that beside the girl, there's no rookies in that movie were all made on purpose and prove how awsome Del Toro is?

Yeah no, I don't buy it. You can't tell me this garbage is on the same level than, say, Pan's Labyrinth

These were tongue-in-cheek.

They're not "actual" rookies. They're following the "rookie vs hotshot" and "washed up hero redeems himself" tropes.

The acting style, plot, and alpha projections are all a matter of directorial taste, but there was a method to the madness, unlike Bay's terribleness, or Lucas' method of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

It's not. It's not supposed to be. He addresses in the commentary about how difficult it is to adequately craft a movie experience based on an absurd premise, like a demon-child summoned from hell via a Nazi ritual, who gets adopted by the USA and grows up to be a pananormal detective.

Someone used the magic word: "charisma". Yeah, that's the thing. This movie has none of that.

Initially planned on buying the Bluray day 1 the moment I left the theater - but the more I think about this film, the less I'm interested in watching it again. I found nothing interesting about this film beyond its visuals - not even the action sequences themselves.

Really regret buying this movie. Lesson learned; watch the movie before buying it lol... Watched it last night and all I can say is what a let down. How did the movie even score a 7.3 on IMDB? Full of terrible action, extra crap story. wow. CG and all was decent but ya...wow. It looked like it was going to be a fun movie from the previews, but the trailers contained parts of almost every single action scene in the movie!

The more I watch this movie the more I like it.

The script is actually dense with small details, and isn't completely moronic. The plot makes sense and isn't full of holes. The characters seem like real people in a difficult time and not just stuffed paper dolls, and are easy to relate to. The humor is silly and fun. Aside from the blue/orange tone, little of the movie is about chasing the flavor of the day; it's uncompromising in its vision. The art design is on-point the entire film. The editing is smart and focused. The soundtrack is thrilling and on-point.

And above all, the action scenes allow you to get a clear spacial understanding of where everyone is at any given time, which 99% of modern action movies are apparently incapable of doing.

If I had any criticisms, I would have eliminated the stick fight in favor of more robots and backstory. But it's a well executed film nonetheless, and is a breath of fresh air among modern action or sci-fi films that constantly fall short of their lofty goals.

I finally got to watch it again on Friday night.

I love giant robots and this movie was basically a live action giant robot anime. The acting and plot line all fit that tone perfectly.

It was a fun movie. You're just not fun.

No it was not fun. If I actually cared for the characters and there was a memorable story to it, it might have got me interested. I can go into a movie and have an imagination and really have fun with it, but when a movie requires me to completely shut off my brain, and watch robots and monsters smack the shit out of eachother the entire movie, well that's not fun and very forgetable...Like I said, a waste of my money.

Watched it yesterday and thought it was enjoyable. Expected it to be better overall though.

Like many have said I thought the acting and dialog were a letdown. I don't mind it being cheesy, but I honestly expected a more solid movie. The CGI and the fights were pretty awesome though and I would definitely like to see more of that in the sequel.

In comparison, I thought Man of Steel was better overall although the pace was all over the place.

Just because Del Toro put thought into making his decisions does not automatically make them good decisions. You can put as much thought into directorial decisions as you want, if you make the wrong choices you still end up with a shit movie. I love a well made action movie, but you still need to have believable characters who act like real human beings. The two scientists were painfully bad (said as a big fan of Charlie day on its always sunny). The biggest problem was that there was no tension because there was no real villain. Monsters showing up randomly and us just being told that they are bigger than the last one is not a compelling antagonist. We are told their plan through the scientists, we are not shown their plan by a master story teller. Almost every line in the movie was exposition. Also, if you have a sword that cuts through the bad guy like butter, why would you ever punch him repeatedly in the face?

Lots of love/hate, but that's fine. People have different tastes, but realize, people who didn't like it, you are in the minority. So the comments about how anyone could actually like this movie are as ridiculous as those who enjoyed it saying you just have bad taste. It didn't resonate with you and that's too bad, but it did for many others.

And as others have already stated, have some of you never watched an old school Kaiju movie before? This was a modern day homage to them. It's as plain as day with how over the top and overly dramatic the characters are and the common themes and execution of the movie. This was GDT's intention.

Just saw it. Pretty cool film but I was disappointed a bit with the special effects. A lot of it was awesome but sometimes I'd find something off about them like it was obvious the actors were behind a green screen. I'm sure people will disagree with me here lol

Does anyone remember a cartoon from the 70's called Grandizer? I was born in the 80's but had an Asian friend that had this on tape and we used to watch it all the time. It had big robots fighting monsters and other big robots and it was so awesome. I hope that PR 2 is more like this or else someone can make something similar.

As long as you aren't referring to any of the cockpit scenes, you're probably not too far off. The main bit that looked a little green-screeny was the atrium bits. But even in theaters it didn't look that bad at all.
