I dunno, the way he says "Newton made a X out of GARBAGE and drifted with the kaiju brain" gets me every time. Plus that awkward fistbump

I liked the scientists. I thought of it was an acknowledgement that nerds can save the world too - and that dude bro jock mech pilots would be fucked without us ;)

Good points. I just wish that other scientist was a bit less cartoony. At least he didn't annoy me.

Got my Striker Eureka figure, and maybe I'm spoiled by the quality of the Gundam models/figures, but this one is pretty disappointing.

Yeah, she explicitly mentions they added new additions to Gypsy before that fight, it's strange so many people miss that.
I just saw this last night and I missed it too. I still wonder why all Jaegers weren't built with giant swords from the beginning since they work so well but then that question eventually leads into why they built Jaegers in the fist place. Some sort of giant laser weapon would have been much more effective and probably cheaper too. But then we wouldn't have a very interesting movie so I guess it makes sense.

I finally watched this movie after paying $1 to rent it. And it wasn't that bad. But after having seen it I wonder why they even bothered with live action. The parts everyone wanted to see were CGI anyways. Kurt Cobain and cute Asian girl had zero chemistry and the script was terrible. But like I said nobody cares because we just want to see robots fighting monsters.

Re-watched this movie yesterday with a friend. It's still a pretty awesome action movie BUT i still hate this piece of shit worthless actor:

This film really didn't need that comical relief character. Uuugh..

Huh? The only even remotely entertaining character in the movie. Everyone else is a piece of cardboard with a face drawn on it

It feels like when you're watching an anime or some other translated movie, and you can tell as you're watching it that some of the plot got lost in translation.

They could honestly claim that's what they were going for and I'd believe it.

Finally got my hands on the Futureshop steelbook and they did a really excellent job on it. Looks incredible.

Just watched this movie with a few friends tonight. During the very first fight scene the consensus was "Why don't these giant robots have swords?"

Fast forward toward the end, "Wait, they've had swords this entire time and they never used them? What the fuck?"

Still an enjoyable movie - but there were just so many "Come onnnnnnnnnn" moments.

You and your friends should pay more attention. The sword is added to Gypsy Danger
just before Mako teams up with Raleigh, and Mako explicitly mentions they made some "additions".
Also addressed multiple times in this thread.

Watched it with the girlfriend.

We just couldn't get into it. Too dull and predictable.
Then again, after watching Evangelion, we both expected some crazy shit to go down.
Also, the swords. I fucking LOVE the two-bladed ones that the second robot had.
Why didn't the other robots get the two-bladed one?
Fucking ripoff.

The amount of salt on this page is palpable.

You fast-forwarded through part of the movie and then got upset that things didn't make sense? They made changes to the bot while the main dude was busy not driving it for a couple years. They didn't have the swords yet in the opening scene.

I'm pretty sure he was using "fast-forward" as a figure of speech.

To be fair, enough people have made this mistake to suggest it wasn't exactly obvious, which is understandable given how casual and vague the "additions" comment was.

Because Striker Eureka was the latest they built? How is that not obvious, it's stated multiple times.

I've come to the conclusion that some people who didn't like the movie just weren't listening. It's understandable though, since most movies mention things like that (and Gipsy's sword) multiple times to beat it into the audience's head. PR explains everything, but for the most part, only explains it once.

Yup, all explained in the movie. Some people just watch and don't listen.

That does seem to be the case with Pacific Rim. So many questions I see asked in this thread are actually answered within the movie itself, it just seems like a lot of people just weren't listening or paying attention. Which is really ironic, because a lot of the naysayers also complain at how simple the story was, lol.

It's still my favorite movie of the year, followed very, very closely by both Gravity and Captain Phillips.

I love the world in this movie to death and i think its a little sad that people dont like the characters but i understand, i just love the themes in this movie. Everyone is brave and willing to sacrafice themselves for the greater good. I also started to notice how the characters dressed and how that even added an aura to there somewhat dull personalities, which after much rewatching arent even that dull there just simple. There is a very chill/relaxing atmosphere to the shatterdome like its there only place to relax yet there all still on edge. I dont know i just love the movie to death, it feels like its stuck in a time capsule and its the only movie so far that connects with my childhood.

Incidentally, Striker Eureka cost the Australian division of the PPDC 100 billion USD to make. That's why they don't build more Mark V Jaegers.

Just watched this movie for the first time. I'm just wondering, is it so incredibly cheesy on purpose? Honest question. I never thought a movie could be this cheesy. It hit literally all the cheesemarks, like they purposely aimed for it.

Anyway it's pretty clear that the entire movie and its story is just an excuse to have big ass robots fighting big ass monsters. All the live action is so incredibly bad and in no way believable. I don't know what it was, maybe the lighting, but it just doesn't look natural. The terrible script and acting didn't help of course. The robot fights were awesome of course. One thing bothered me and that was the weird water effects coming of the robots and monsters. That just didn't look right. I also really like the music, it's just plain awesome.

Overal I liked the movie as I started to embrace the awesome fights, music and its incredible cheesiness. It really felt like watching some crazy ass anime that made its way into a Hollywood film. Pretty weird yet cool movie.

Just watched this for the 2nd time on Blu Ray with a friend, his wife and another friends wife. The two ladies found it very entertaining even though it was about giant robots and monsters fighting.

Same. Too much cheese, and then they overdone the fights to the point where before the final battle I was like "meh".

Fuck, I wish Guiellermo did commentary for every movie I watched. He does it better than anyone. No one does it as good as he does. NO ONE.
Yeah, he's the man. You can always rely on Guillermo for thoughtful insights about cinema, especially his own work.

This is doing the rounds on Reddit and I just had to link to it

It was originally designed to drop-kick fishing boats back to Indonesia

Meh, didn't really enjoy this. Felt like something plucked straight of out of the '90s. Then again, I wasn't too keen on the Hell Boy movies either. It was corny as hell, sorry. Love the director (strangely enough), though, so I'm happy for his success...I guess.

Was at my girlfriend's this weekend and caught her parents watching Pacific Rim and they enjoyed it a lot. Totally was not expecting that at all. xD

Got the Blu-Ray last week for my Birthday. Looks soooooooooooooooo good. Thoroughly enjoyed the viewing as it's the first time since I saw it in the cinema.

Watched this last night for the first time on 3D Blu-Ray. Enjoyed it a lot. Great fun.

Is giving away UltraViolet codes ok on here? Don't need it since it's not supported in my country.

What the hell is Charlie Day doing in this movie lol. Also, it's great, loving it so far. I was skeptical about it being too stupidly campy, so far so awesome though.

Watched it recently

I was personally never that excited about the idea but it turned out to be surprisingly fun.

It was a bit too predictable tbh and it was a shame that all of the side characters turned out more interesting than the main characters, but I loved the fights and hey we even got some Australian characters out of it lol

Dewd I freaking loved it. The fights were amazing, it was beautiful visually, and it's one of those appropriate uses of the word epic.

Personally I love it when a movie can embrace cliches and take them on in some new way while still retaining the adorable charm that makes them cliche. See Charlie Day's dork character. And when Ron Perlman shows up, you know it's legit. So good.

I don't know if the story warrants a sequel, probably best to keep it as a standalone, but I also have a sudden craving for more giant things fighting each other. Hopefully Godzilla reboot delivers

And I totally forgot about GLaDOS until like half way through! This movie is a "nerd" wet dream, shame on me for thinking it would be too campy or pandering

Space knife FTW!

Edit: oh and I respect a movie so much more when it uses a character's actual language with subtitles. I can read, never got why subtitles bother people so much, different strokes I guess

Edit 2: if anybody reads this, we need a gif of the guy nodding during Idris Elba's speech. They show the crowd at one point, and everyones kind of looking up, reverently, but there's one guy in the crowd just nodding away like, "Yep. Mm Hm. I agree with that, yep."

Brought the blu ray, first time I brought a film from a store in like 4 to 5 years!

Still pretty fucking epic. I don't know if it is my TV or the cinema was bad, but the quality of whole quality of the film ( CGI) is just one of the best and looked even better.

Still wish we saw more of the other Jaeger and more day time battles ( I still believe the short news scene with Eureka and that Kaiju was one of best, also got a lot better sense of scale since it was from a more grounded human level)

Defiantly one of my most enjoyable films and worth the purchase, cant wait to see the extra features.
