Rumor: Titanfall also 720p?

If my lower spec PC can get 1080p I'm sure the XB1 will do it just fine, eventually.

The XB1 is essentially a low spec with a more complex RAM setup. So...maybe not. Anyway, did anyone make the "maybe they should've called it XBOX 720 after all" joke? If not - I am first. :)

Titanfall doesn't even look that great, hell I bet my laptop could play that on 720p. If true, would this be the result of bad optimisation?

I remember reading here in GAF that Titanfall takes so much resources because of the jetpack jump. Unlike walking, when the player fly/jumps, he will see a big part of the map which means many more objects to render, that could lead to framerate drop; so to maintain the framerate, resolution has be reduced.

Maybe they wanted to call it that way but they noticed how many jokes there would be if most of games will be 720p

You are missing the point, we are asking for the new consoles to run games at 1080p.

With your logyc, might as well stick to 360s and PS3 on 720p tv sets.

A worthy 2005 setup.

No I don't think I am. You've seen the hardware specs, it's been long rumored what we'd be getting. And I'm a big fan of 1080p gaming on the PC, but lower resolutions than 1080p won't stop me from playing a great game, that's just absurd.

It seems like a mix of lower powered and harder to program for.

I wouldn't be surprised if 3rd parties manage to claw their way up to 800-900p later in the gen once they have a better handle on the hardware. But yeah, it's kinda sad at launch to see 720p almost across the board. I don't take any pleasure in it, I really wish MS had stuck to their gaming roots and made a powerhouse console.

That sounds like a problem I'd expect from current gen for draw distance and trying to avoid pop-in. Not from a next gen console.

I think a lot of people do. Microsoft making a shitty console only benefits Sony.

Simple choice for me.

I am not going to buy a XB1 for a single game - never mind how good.

TitanFall in 1080/60 and a DS4 controller = pick up the PC version (and it will likely be cheaper)

By having exclusives on MS platforms (360, XB1, Windows 8) rather than XBox platforms, MS is seriously undermining the need to cough up the cash and get a XB1. Going forward the ideal living room combo for a gaming nut like me is: PS4/PC/WiiU

I have the cash... but I am still finding no reason to get a XB1 as their TV integration stuff does not work here (UK) and why should I play inferior versions of Titanfall and other "exclusives"?

The XB1 is certainly not "over-delivering on value", yet. In fact it can't even deliver any value worth shaking my wallet for. Sony, not MS, have the reputation for consistent lifetime support of a platform with interesting games. So even if the launch lineup on the PS4 is lack-lustre at least I know I am in for some good stuff in the long term.

When I advise people on console choice these days (which I seem to do far too often) it is an easy recommendation; Stick with what you have for now, and if you really want a new console grab a PS4... don't go near the XB1 until it starts to live up to it's potential and the services it was announced with actually become reality in your region. Otherwise it is an overpriced, underpowered games console with very few genuine exclusives worth worrying about.

This is even bigger than the CoD news. At least Ghosts is a launch title on 5 platforms so we know it won't give the console proper attention but Respawn is only developing the XBO and PC versions in house. I'm just wondering how some of the least impressive visuals we've seen from next gen are bringing XBO down to 720p. There has to be a lot more to it than just the power difference. I guess the tools are in even worse shape than we had originally thought.

Titfall pls.

Seriously though, I'm not surprised about this news. Nor would I be surprised if the same was true for the PS4 version. Depending on how well my current PC copes with the spec requirements, I'll either pick this up on that or PS4.

Come on, how people can know that the PS4 version will be 1080p ? Everybody is now an expert in 3D or consoles' architecture ? I'll believe it when I'll see it.
Gonna play it on PC, but man those next gen discussions are so annoying ! "Superi0r PS4 verzion confirmed, lulz" Shut up already !

The feel of 1080p.

But in all seriousness, its sad to see that one of the most hyped games for nextgen console from Microsoft will run in 720p. And on top of that, it has a visuals of total conversion multiplayer mod for Modern Warfare...

Oh well, Respawn is defending themselves by claiming "we are a small 60-80 person team". I don't see how they can start defending themselves in any other way now...

So you're telling me resolution would stop you from playing the TLOU, The Mass Effect series, The Witcher 2, [Insert critically acclaimed game here]? Like I seriously don't get it. I'd love to have 1080p but I'd rather have 60 frames per sec and if resolution is the compromise that has to be made so be it. I mean it's not like most of the people on GAF don't know the specs of the machines they're buying. If you want the absolute best graphics, you just can't get that on consoles. No game to my knowledge has ever received a bad review based on resolution.

It's 2013, you're paying 500 euros for this thing....
You shouldn't have to choose between 60 fps and 1080p, anything less than 1080p shouldn't even be on the table.

Go ask pc gaf with gpus from 2010-2011 and ask how many of them play at 720p... (noone)
I have a 160 euro gpu from 2011 and I haven't played a single game at 720p on it.

So yes, a 500 euro brand new console in late 2013/ early 2014 if you aren't a 'tier 1' country should definitely not have 720p or 900p games, it's ridiculous

MS done fucked up, that is all.
The hardware is very underpowered for the cost.
xbox 360 was high end at release and was 299 euros, this thing is entry level hardware and somehow costs 500
Why would you defend this? It's your money and you should expect a lot more for it.

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind, PS4 will dominate in the US, and Obliterate in the EU, a free copy of FIFA isn't enough.

I'm not defending it per se, if you're thinking that I'm somehow absolving MS of the blame and they did release and they're releasing an underpowered console, it's why I'm no longer getting the console Day One and just upgrading my GPU (hopefully developers figure out the hardware when I finally get it). It's the idea that reading some posts that 720p is somehow unplayable. I just can't get behind that and I've been gaming 1080p on virtually every PC game I've played the last 2 years or so but I still make time for the console games many of the games are sub720p. My argument is based more on the game than the console itself. Like I've seen Titanfall, I'd play that at 600p, that's how fun it looks.

I don't want to believe. Tell me it's just unfinished drivers. Or a precaurion because of OS issues that will be gone before second wave titles. Or that monkeys with broken fingers ported the Xbone versions of Titanfall and CoD. Tell me we won't get a gen where Source games can't hit 60 fps at 1080p on one of the consoles that will actually get multi-plats and fucking Wii U. I worry for multiplat/pc games with a baseline like that.

Thankfully I think Nvidia having lost the contract on consoles, is pushing really hard for an advanced PC market. Especially with the current consoles essentially being gimped PC's (running X86, and similiar framework). I think were going to see some really incredible PC games that won't be held back quite as much as this gen.

By whom?

So many pc exclusive devs have jumped ship to multiplat development, hell, Crytek even does a console exclusive game. Indies don't have the manpower for big, detailed worlds unless they want to work on one game for half the gen. Lots of new franchises are f2p, aiming to include everyone and their mother's notebook as possible users.

Who's left to actually make a game for the high mid-end and high end segment in, say, 2016, unrestrained by people clinging to DX9 or console GPUs when I upgrade my pc. Who wil make next gens rig breaking, previously impossible game? More advanced SSAO, softer shadows, higher res, higher fps, pfh, I want a game that makes even Derrick stop complaining.

Someone please think of the baseline specs ;_;

Good to see they are still able to achieve what they did 2 generations ago

Oh shit I didn't think about that, early look at the PS4 version (hopefully) XD

What I don't get is why there is not a MS guy in here diffusing this? This rumor is detrimental to their business and the fact that no one from MS is in here refuting this is nothing short of amazing. First COD and now this. If this turns out to be true could we say that it was obvious that the focus on gaming that MS is giving the consumer is a mirage?

I think at this point MS has pretty much lost the hardcore market that wants the best possible bang for their buck. The only thing that can save the One is how much traction it gains with the casual's. But, even then they may only have the hardware sales if people only buy it for the TV features and have zero interest in the games!

Do you have alberts post and a translation of CBOAT?

Sure, of course.

Albert's post here:

Albert Penello said:
Man these threads crack me up. Well done on the Nickelback gif.

I'm not going to convince anyone differently, but it's funny how people interpret the tweet as confirmation.

First - I don't know the resolution. I don't have more sophisticated tools than anyone else. I watch the game on a nice TV with the XBO set to 1080p for every game, there is no way for me to know what's native vs. upscaled unless I'm told.

Second, if I did know, it wouldn't be my place to say anything.

If the Ryse footage last week showed me anything, it's that you get a much more interesting discussion when you're looking at real footage.

So now I've seen the PS4 footage, and I've seen XBO running live. To me, they both look great.

The resolution will be what it will be. It will be known when Activision wants it to be known. The only thing I was curious about was if the games look different, and based on the assets available to me, they don't.

So I think when XBO footage comes out, and people can compare resolutions, effects, framerate and other things the debate will be more interesting.

All that doesn't come across in Twitter-sized bites.

CBOATs response to Albert (translated) here, specifically quoting Albert's "The resolution will be what it will be. It will be known when Activision wants it to be known" line:

We all already know.
Titanfall also.
Not cool to hold back stuff we can't interact or tell truths with, even if its the job to obfuscate.

Transparency is better when dealing with this position. Whatever though.

That's confirmation right there. MS are hoping they can get away with upscaling while simultaneously claiming their console is as powerful a the console that does native 1080p. It's a difficult tightrope to walk but the average consumer will never know of our conversations. Twitter would be the best way of educating the masses, so get to it Gaf!

With all those rumors of 720 games, and we're not even talking about really impressive graphics.. IS that possible that we don't know everything about the XBO ? I mean, the actual difference in power with the PS4 is known, in term of specs. But what if there is a catch we don't know about. Like if Kynect actually eat more power and ram than what we knew about .. ?
