Although the space allotted here can't possibly suffice to elaborate in detail on the long list of Microsoft's quixotic dissertations—including the snappish, the scabrous, the doolally, and especially the misleading—I'll use what little space I have to stand as a witness in the divine court of the Eternal Judge and proclaim that Microsoft and others of its ilk are symbols of myopic insurrectionism. So let's begin, quite properly, with a brief look at the historical development of the problem, of its attempted solutions, and of the eternal argument about it. Microsoft's junta is an incubator for an upcoming new epidemic of antagonism. This is the flaw in Microsoft's platitudes. It doesn't understand that if it feels ridiculed by all the attention my letters are bringing it, then that's just too darn bad. Microsoft's arrogance has brought this upon itself.

It's incumbent upon us all, as thinking machines and social beings, to think very hard about how the fight to give our young people the values that will inspire them to investigate Microsoft's jackbooted principles, ideals, and objectives demands a fight against prostitution, prejudices, old habits, and previous conceptions. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the general drift. One wonders how Microsoft can complain about the worst types of yawping, self-pitying desperados there are given that its own conclusions also aim to stifle the voices of those who are simply seeking to be heard. If we take Microsoft's flimflams to their logical conclusion, we see that quicker than you can double-check the spelling of "incomprehensibleness", Microsoft will prey on people's fear of political and economic instability. Microsoft has been known to "prove" statistically that no one is smart enough to see through its transparent lies. As you might have suspected, its proof is flawed. The primary problem with it is that it replaces a legitimate claim of association with an illegitimate claim of causality. Consequently, Microsoft's "proof" demonstrates only that it wants to introduce a zeitgeist of ethnocentrism to our society. You know what groups have historically wanted to do the same thing? Fascists and Nazis.

Although Microsoft has tremendous popular appeal it may seem difficult at first to call people to their highest and best, not accommodate them at their lowest and least. It is. But its writings disgust and infuriate me. End of story. Actually, I should add that its jibes are becoming increasingly feckless. They have already begun to shred the basic compact between the people and their government. Now fast-forward a few years to a time in which they have enabled Microsoft to etiolate its nemeses. If you don't want such a time to come then help me reinvigorate our collective commitment to building and maintaining a sensitive, tolerant, and humane community. Help me perform noble deeds.

Microsoft maintains that honor counts for nothing. That's not just a lie but is actually the exact opposite of the truth—and Microsoft knows it. Why is Microsoft deliberately turning the truth on its head like that? It is only when one has an answer to that question is it possible to make sense of Microsoft's homilies because Microsoft swims in a sea of fascism, the waters of which roil with anger and resentment. Most of that anger and resentment is directed towards people like me who establish a "truth commission" whose charter is to investigate some of Microsoft's more avaricious philippics.

At first, you might be unsure as to whether given the public appetite for more accountability, Microsoft's objectives stink to high heaven. But on deeper inspection, you'll certainly conclude that Microsoft is planning to force square pegs into round holes. This does not bode well for the future because it ignores a breathtaking number of facts, most notably:

Fact: Now is not the time to go wobbly on our opposition to its incompetent, churlish stratagems.

Fact: Its flights of fancy are dimwitted with a side of dimwitted sauce.

Fact: In legal terminology, it is guilty of suppressio veri or "concealment of truth".

In addition, it wasn't so long ago that people like you and me were free to hold it to account for recovering the dead past by annihilating the living present. Recently, that's become a lot harder to do. What happened that changed things so much? To put it briefly, Microsoft happened. By peonizing and enslaving its critics, Microsoft has managed to alter laws, language, and customs in the service of regulating social relations. I'd like to end this letter with a message for Microsoft. I'd like to say with emphasis and distinctness—not as a threat, but as a warning—that I will do whatever it takes to break away from the peloton and issue a call to conscience and reason, and I won't let Microsoft stop me from achieving that goal.

Yeah, uhh, hell no. Games will always be the most important factor. The fact that one system can offer prettier games than the other system is just an added bonus.

It blows my mind that anyone would just look at a sheet of specs, compare them and make a decision based solely off that. It's a bit ludicrous.

Considering Playstation and Xbox have been carried through the gen largely by multiplats, not really.

WT Actual F?

Dropped in, read this:
People buy PS4 and Xbone at launch because they want new HIGHTEC toys, not because they want to play rather weak launch games, which are already the xiteration and don't offer something new BESIDES better graphics. So, yes, in fact people spend their money for TECH, not for games

I went to visit my ex-girlfriends family for Thanksgiving a few years back. It was there that I realized not all gamers are like us GAF gamers and that most casual gamers are, in fact, retarded. I shit you not, I walked in on her cousings playing COD Black Ops on PS3 with the bundled composite cables - running 480p on their 1080p capable 70+ inch LCD. They had been playing that way for over a year! I came back the next day with a spare HDMI cable and set them up right.

Moral of the story? We are the minority GAF. The sad truth is that the majority are impulse buying casual gaming blasphemers. #TruthFacts

I laughed =)

Hmm I wonder if the system with a 50% more powerful gpu and 8 gb of gddr5 ram could handle something a system with a %50 weaker gpu and 8gb of ddr3 with a 32mb cache of esram can handle? Nope im sure it cant.

I'm more a proof in the pudding kind of guy, not a cherry picked tech specs kinda guy. When we see a game looking 50% better, I'll believe all of that.

Actually as I posted I noticed this.....I stand by my original statement but that is an elaborate and verbose post

What a load. So I'm supposed to buy a PS4 because it's more powerful and cheaper, even though the only game that interests me in the launch window is Resogun? And I'm supposed to ignore the weaker Xbone even though I'm super excited to play Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Crimson Dragon, and Titanfall in that same window? Yeah, no thanks. I realize the PS4 hardware is the better value, but I'm looking for more than a next gen Netflix player.

Sony are still dropping big bombs on the PS3, whereas MS stopped firing their 360 artillery many months ago. You know Sony will provide years and years of games for a platform as its a proven track record, whereas MS gets bored and pissed off and just lets theirs rot in the final years.

Super excited?

He has a point, to some extend. There are still a lot of awesome games on current generation consoles that I haven't played yet. In terms of gameplay and atmosphere, they are virtually equivalent to the upcoming next-gen games. I don't need to buy those new consoles to satisfy my craving for games. I mainly do it because, after 7-8 years, I am just ready for shiny, new stuff and pixels.

He's right to a degree. People buying these systems are making 5+ year purchases, not 1 month purchases. They're bought on the promise of future games. On the promise of new technology and consequently bigger and better games. If you're buying a launch system purely because of what will be there on day one, then frankly (imo) you're doing it wrong.

I had exactly the same situation, only my ex girlfriends son was playing it with an HDMI cable but had it set to 480p. The XMB was frigin' HUGE. I noticed the problem and immediately set it up for him. The look on his face was a picture. He looked completely puzzled because he couldn't see a difference even though now the XMB was much smaller and much sharper. He even looked at his friends in the room as if to say 'this guy is crazy'. Casuals are thick, you are right ... but they're also skint.

Wait, it gets better.

Guys u can't tell the diferance anyway. a1080p IMG at 60 fps is unstable and human eye can't compute the pixels Trust me I make monitors. 720 beter

So, Foxconn workers do have time to browse reddit during their spare time...

//Edith: I can't believe that I spend my complete morning with reading this thread (and the other one) and still have 80+ pages to go - thank you girls and guys for this distraction, which I weirdly enjoy

I'm more a proof in the pudding kind of guy, not a cherry picked tech specs kinda guy. When we see a game looking 50% better, I'll believe all of that.

It's not going to scale linearly, but you have to be in some sort of denial to just wave off all this techno mumbo jumbo.

Wow, that is a piece of art. It really is.

I think it's amazing how people go out of their way to legitimate spending 500$ on a weak "next gen" machine instead of buying the clearly superior one for 100bucks less. The argument "but it's the games" doesn't matter since you buy that new platform for only one reason, that is that it's more powerful than it's predecessor.

I think "but it's the games" argument can somewhat matter. I am getting a Xbox One mainly for Forza 5 and Crimson Dragon. I doubt we will see either game on the PS4 any time soon (although we could see similar games). Plus I am a fan of other Microsoft IP such as Halo, so the console at this moment seems like a good investment.

It does seem that the PS4 is the more powerful and cheaper console but I am not getting that at launch as there are no launch exclusives I really want for that platform. If they announce a new Uncharted game for it then I'll most likely get one around the time that comes out.

I agree with you to some extent in that if you are getting a new console solely for multiplatform titles then right now it seems like the PS4 is the better purchase as it seems like it will run those games better (until MS actually says something and shows some numbers).

It is hilarious to watch the sides switch when it comes to the issue of multiplat technical differences. I'm not talking about the games themselves, but the arguments from each companies' supporters. The exact same arguments we've heard for the entire gen*, but coming from the opposite sides of the fence this time. Xbox fans using Playstation fan's testimonials about the differences being so small as to not matter and Playstation fans using those tried and tested rebuttals Xbox fans used against their own testimonials for years. Oh boy.

edit: and now we have PS fans saying how multiplats are the best way to determine power, and XB fans mentioning the exclusives instead. Hah. Love it.

*less so towards the end as PS3 dev became less of a minefield

Damning assessment but one that I agree with

I absolutely agree. XONE lineup is killer.

I am getting XONE at launch and a PS4 after xmas as that is when it's killer titles will drop. Super excited for both machines.

Actual Game was linear, but it was set in an open world and the game loaded the environments as if they were open.
And there is one day/night transition.

So yeah.

I have no idea what context we're talking about Alan Wake in (wow that's a lot more pages since I went to bed), but Goku here is right. The engine is an open world engine. They added a free camera to the PC version to show this off. It doesn't load in buildings and bridges that don't feature in that particular episode generally (there's at least one exception to that that I have discovered) but the mountains and trees and foliage for the whole area of bright falls are there all the time.

The IQ on Xbox is horrible, but the game is doing some impressive things technically. Thank god we have the PC version so that we can run it with good IQ.

lol @ damage control

I'm buying a PS4, I have 0 interest in the Xbox One - due to games, not graphics power.

How about both, 1080p and the "other stuff"? Even if 720p were good enough and they went with it on PS4 as well, they could put in even more "other stuff" on PS4 than on Xbone.

Absoloutely correct - that's not the point, I take issue and will continue to take issue with people insist that 1080p is "the only option" basically, sick of it.
The "other stuff" is much more important than resolution to me.
Here we go goons, here's 1080p let's lose our shit over how amazing it is!!
Quake0009.jpg

This is not so much about the resolution of this particular game, it's more about the power difference between both consoles.

We know there's a power difference, it's been done to death.
If the game had lower texture quality, half the frame rate, lower resolution and looked absoloutely visibly worse - sure.
I'd like to see 2 images personally, one of the PS4 version, one of the Xbox One - both at 1080p - except of course the Xbox is upsampled.
I bet they really aren't mind boggingly, 50 page OMG OMG OMG!!! different at all.

If it's the games, no one should buy either a PS4 or a Xbone at launch. There are plenty of systems out there with much more choice of games, higher quality games, cheaper games. People buy PS4 and Xbone at launch because they want new HIGHTEC toys, not because they want to play rather weak launch games, which are already the xiteration and don't offer something new BESIDES better graphics. So, yes, in fact people spend their money for TECH, not for games. And if you buy a xbone for tech, you are doing it wrong.

As always its not one simple thing, it's not EITHER tech OR games, how could it be, you buy a new console yes because it's more powerful than its predecessor (amazingly, Xbone is significantly more powerful than the 360), you also buy it because of the games it provides and will provide. Microsoft exclusives carry a lot of weight, if given the choice of Xbone's games vs PS4s games, with many of the cross platform games being higher resolution on PS4, its easy to imagine why someone could choose Xbone over PS4 due the game selection being better for them.

And as always, if you're buying the PS4 for graphics power alone, then you're doing it wrong, there is and will always be a much more powerful alternative - PC.

yeah for sure, but that can be pretty subjective

Speaking for myself i'm buying a X1 for Killer Instinct/Crimson Dragon/DR3 mainly

The same i will do for the WiiU when Bayonetta 2 and X will come out

i don't know why games are not the priority anymore compared to the hardware

i can't understand it

I'm more a proof in the pudding kind of guy, not a cherry picked tech specs kinda guy. When we see a game looking 50% better, I'll believe all of that.

The "proof in the pudding" is already here, in the form of many developers outright claiming that games run ~50% faster on the PS4 than the Xbox One.

One developer gave an example, in which the PS4 could handle a full 1920x1080p game at ~30fps, but the Xbox One would only run the same game at "'20-something' FPS in 1600×900p."

I've noticed how almost everything has been done/is being done to make sure people forget that.

Fixed for accuracy.

However, buying consoles on the merit of it's launch games is a terrible idea. We all know how that one turned out - not just once, not just twice, but thrice!

Man these threads crack me up. Well done on the Nickelback gif.

I'm not going to convince anyone differently, but it's funny how people interpret the tweet as confirmation.

First - I don't know the resolution. I don't have more sophisticated tools than anyone else. I watch the game on a nice TV with the XBO set to 1080p for every game, there is no way for me to know what's native vs. upscaled unless I'm told.

The resolution will be what it will be. It will be known when Activision wants it to be known. The only thing I was curious about was if the games look different, and based on the assets available to me, they don't.

Your kind of contradicting yourself here. You say you can't tell what's native and what's upscaled and then say that they're the same based on the assets available to you. Maybe I'm reading too much into it and you just aren't capable of telling the difference yourself. But, then that would raise some concern considering the position you're in.

Personally, I don't believe a word you're saying. How can someone in your position not be privy to this sort of basic information about a game that's a month from launch; especially when you consider how closely COD is tied to MS?!

I'm talking about actual games, not the words of an anonymous developer.

I'm sorry, but you make no sense here lol. So, the Xbox One somehow isn't more powerful than its predecessor now because the PS4 is stronger and $100 cheaper? So the games, games that I can't find on any other platform but the Xbox One, shouldn't mean anything at all because the PS4 is the more powerful system? Thank fucking god I don't think the way you do, because that's a load of crap if I've ever heard it.

Don't worry, though. I'm buying a PS4, too, so you'll get half your wish granted, but don't be too disappointed that I'm also picking up an Xbox One at launch also. The Xbox One could be even weaker than it is now, and I still wouldn't want to miss out on the next Halo, Quantum Break, Ryse, Dead Rising 3, or any of the other games I'm looking forward to. But I will say this: I'm thrilled, and I mean absolutely thrilled, that you seem so passionate and concerned about which videogame systems and games I choose to purchase with my money. I'm certain your intentions are entirely in my own best interest as a gamer, and has nothing to do with your own selfish motivations.

Excuse me, but, no sir, take that crap back where you found it.

5020.gif

And do people really want to stuck at 720p for another eight years? That shit was bad enough ten years ago.

I don't want to be stuck at 720p - I DO want my games consistently at least 30fps (SP games) - I want nice textures, nice models, good lighting and so on.
I'm not completely and utterly fixed on a single thing (resolution) like so many are

You know what the best looking game that I've seen in the past 5 years is?
GTAV - that lighting, that art design? Fucking immaculate - would I like it smoother? Fuck yes, would I like the jaggies to be gone? Sure - but that games lighting alone is fucking astonishing. That's gaming to me. - because once you suspend disbelief - it's one of the most lifelike games I've ever played - light, is right.

Who really cares? I will still get the Xbone version because Live blows PSN away for MP.

I see this posted everywhere and as someone who has owned both consoles since launch its barely been true for a long time.

We simply don't know how PSN and XBL are going to be on both launch consoles, especially with the murmurs that the new matchmaking system on XO still isn't working weeks from launch.
