Rumor: Titanfall also 720p?

Titanfall will be 720p?

It's still months out... How can that even be known yet? Everything is just so nuts around here. I can hardly comprehend it.

I'd personally agree that resolution isn't the only factor that defines a technical leap, but what are these dozens of other on-screen features that people are supposed to care about?

And if Halo was available on the N64 too, yeah, I might ask just why people feel the need to jump to the Xbox when they could have that game in "good enough" fashion on their existing console.

I just keep seeing posts about how to the average console buyer, resolution doesnt matter. Framerate doesn't matter. And yeah, it makes me wonder just what it is that we can point to that DOES matter for the average buyer here, when it comes to these titles that they can get on their current consoles.

Remember that "low settings screenshot thread" for PC games? This is drastically simplified, but imagine that 360/PS3 games are running 720p, but on the lowest settings, but Xbox One games are running at 720p with High/Very High settings. Which could affect:

-resolution of the source textures (are you stuck with 512x512 textures due to memory reasons, or can everything now be 2048x2048?)
-number and quality of enemies/particles/other objects on screen (does everything need to fade out instantly, or can you have more persistent "carnage"?)
-lighting and shadow quality
-anti-aliasing
-draw distance, and streaming of large environments
-*insert other fancy graphics buzzword here*
-and of course, how this all performs, framerate-wise, in the end.

And that's just on the graphics side, which doesn't include user interface tweaks, built-in OS support for extra features that would have to be manually done on the 360/PS3 version, and so on.

So even if the "native resolution" stayed at 720p, there's still plenty of other things that could make someone want to upgrade.

Again, not saying that somehow 1080p would be useless or whatever, and of course, if all else is equal, having native 1080p graphics is nice as well. And I'm not saying "durrr the Xbox One is balanced and the PS4 is not durrr" or anything like that (I completely recognize that PS4 is likely to be able to do all the same visual tricks, and with likely better resolution/performance). All I was saying (which you seem to agree with!) is that resolution by itself is not the only factor to take into account.

A lack of power is a lack of power, it stands to reason that resolution isn't the only manifestation of the power difference between the two machines, or how small the difference between current and next gen might be.

Again, neither Titanfall or COD look like graphical powerhouses, they're very obviously cross-gen games. Not being able to do 1080p/60fps is embarassing.

The post that started this conversation was why would someone buy a new generation version of a game over a 360. The Xbox One can still do far better graphics than a 360 (and obviously plenty of other non-graphics related features), even if the resolution is exactly the same. That was the only point I was responding to.

The game will be just as amazing wether it is 1080p or 720p. Sorry but graphics do not make a game.

Everyone who has tried this game at the big industry shows love it. Also this game has taken home the most awards. It is the best looking game coming out for next gen and I am not talking about graphics.

Sony fanboys are finding everything possible to knit pick and bash the Xbox One but truth is the reason the PS4 is 399 and not shipping with a camera and only 4gb of ram is because MS won the last gen so Sony had to do what they can to win back gamers.

There are so many crazy people around that I was fooled for quite some time. It was like skipping into the first episode of The Office and not quite understanding it wasn't a real documentary.

I thought it was real until I saw the side by side on his monitor and the Xbox side is all giant pixels. Lol but it still seemed like a real video lol

I want to hug you so tightly.

Wasn't planning on getting either at launch, but was swaying to Xbone.

But as a long term Xbot, gotta say Microsoft, your losing me...your losing me.

900p I was fine with...but a £450 quid box *really* should do 1080p effortlessly. And it's alarming that the Xbone obviously can't. Sadly it looks like it's true as no-one from MS is coming out to shoot down these rumors.

How could they have got it so wrong?

You mean only 8gb right?

I agree Titanfall rocks but I don't understand what that last part has to do with anything? Are you trying to say competition is good?

Edit: MS won according to you so they can do whatever they want?

Launch games may not be doing 1080p but games in a year or two will do 1080p no problem. Developers need to get use to the hardware and MS will improve the SDK's and tools.

No, graphics don't make a game, but with more power should come better graphics. I love Shenmue, for example, but if it came out in 2013 looking like that, many people wouldn't even play it. While there are admittedly many Sony fanboys, there are just as many Microsoft fanboys arguing in favor of the One while ignoring valid points.

This shouldn't be an argument. Graphics are one of the major improvements in every console generation. Imagine if people felt the same way in the NES era - "Eh, Mario looks good enough, lets focus on other things." Yes, Titanfall does seem to be a game that many people will enjoy, regardless of graphics, but where is the significant improvement from last gen?

Lastly, of course Sony is doing anything they can to win back consumers. Microsoft is also doing nothing to keep them. This is a company that is happy with sitting on its laurels, and saying, "We released a fact of the day, I'm sure customers will understand and come back to us!"

If 1080p isn't important, why are we even bothering with a new generation at all? Last gen consoles (8 years old) are perfectly capable of 720p.

I know we're all upset at a bunch of games being 720p... but let's not tell tall tales... Most PS360 games are sub-720p at or below 30fps.

What a bad statement. Unless it's raw video, you simply can not compare direct feed to video.

That statement just keeps cracking me up no matter how many times it's quoted

1) Saying that film that was downsampled to 720p vs. a CG image rendered at 720p then upscaled to 1080p are going to produce the same results (lolno)

2) Saying the visual experience on a TV is the same as playing a video game (you never focus on such small details like crosshairs only a few pixels large, aim down scopes, and reading small text in complex menus while watching TV).

3) Cherry on top - 'LOL WOW SO BUTTHURT GUYZ' tweet a while later.

This is very moving and induces a great strength within me.

that great strength could be the tea which hurled out of my throat

I would think is the reverse. Think about it. What recent 360 or ps3 major game has come at 720p? Resolution, like personnel on a budget, is the first thing to go out of the window when making sacrifices. Later games will have more bells and whistles, but lower resolution. The precedent is set and we have seen it.

I don't know thought I heard PS4 was originally only going to have 4gb but then was increased only after developers complained.

Oh, the way i read what you said was that sony removed the camera and only used 4gb to keep the price down to 399.

At this point in the game's development they definitely have that resolution locked down. Meaning it's already decided and in place.

Someone from the dev team could tell friends, and it gets around within the industry. Someone at EA, involved with the project, could talk to people, expressing their frustration working with the XB1 hardware. There are lots of ways for that sort of thing to get around.

Taking into account what that customer likely already owns (a 360, a television, and probably some sort of mobile device like a smartphone or a tablet), the xbone doesn't exactly make a great case for itself. If a resolution jump as large as 720p to 1080p doesn't matter to said customer, how much will better lighting/textures (or media/connectivity features he already has on his mobile device) matter to him?

A cross-gen title that already has underwhelming graphics needing to make extreme graphical compromises doesn't bode well for the rest of the console cycle. There's probably going to be a lot of disappointment on launch day with regards to visual fidelity, even with PS4 early adopters.

I just don't get it - Either make the console REALLY worth changing over for in the living room or not.

I agree graphics are very important but this alone doesn't make the game. You can have the best graphics but if it is not fun to play who cares. Some of the best games current gen came from the Wii which sold 100m units world wide.

I also agree somewhat with this last statement. But this is what big companies do and Sony is guilty of the samething but I wouldn't say MS is just sitting on it's laurels.

Yes another excuse for Microsoft from Garnett Lee. I'm getting sick of certain journalists acting like Microsoft's damage control center.

It's absolutely tiring. I don't know if it's payrolls or they just have an inner MS fanboy in them. Just look at the Wii U. Shitted on from just about everyone. Journalists, forums, game developers, etc. But yet with X1, WE are the problem

This is not about the game. This is about the console. Nobody is saying TitanFall isn't good because of 720p. It's about a next gen console running games at 720p

I'm really tired about hearing all the nonsense about this game running at 720p, while this game runs at 1080p.

I still game on a 27 inch Apex CRT (this one to be exact http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000066E77/?tag=neogaf0e-20).

And I will not be buying any next-gen systems because I simply do not have a HDMI input on my TV and I see absolutely no reason on wasting money to upgrade my TV, just to play some games I can pretty much get on the current crop of consoles I already on.

Sad, because their closed mindedness on not allowing more video outputs has caused them to lose this customer.

I know we're all upset at a bunch of games being 720p... but let's not tell tall tales... Most PS360 games are sub-720p at or below 30fps.

A lot WERE sub 720p, but that certainly seems to have been less and less common as the generation has gone on, to the point where I would imagine most games now are 720p, or extremely close.

My point was that if 720p is the standard we are accepting for this gen, then games like The Last of Us and GTA V are essentially already there, so why not continue with PS3/360 for a little while longer?

Not all games on Ps2/xbox/gc were 720p, but let's not kid ourselves, there would have been rage if the 360/ps3 launched at the prices they did, and a chunk of the launch games were 480p standard def.

It is extremely weird having journalists out there trying to downplay differences like this. 1080p is literally more than twice as many pixels. It is an obvious difference, especially with real-time 3D content and anyone saying most people can't see it at normal viewing distances is simply repeating apocrypha. This is the kind of thing they should be warning their audience about. "Planning to get an Xbox One to play Call of Duty? Here's what MS doesn't want you to know!" A console's power isn't the only factor, been when all the other factors are also in the PS4's favor it's a bit silly to fall back on an "oh well, MS will probably still market everyone into submission anyway!" argument.

  • 64 Player BF4
  • Virutally No Load Times

  • Live service can be shared between consoles

No offense but you can get a HDTV for like next to nothing. Don't blame technology moving past CRT's.

YESSS THIS! This is the old school warrior post I was looking for! Pay attention boys and girls, this is how you fight the good fight. As for the actual content of the post, laughable at best.

Christ man, how much could a 27" LCD possibly be???

My television is in black and white and who needs mp3 when you have 8 track? I can watch tv and play games and listen to music just fine! Darn these kids these days, nothing is ever good enough for them.

I have no idea why people are so opposed to calling things like they are sometimes. Everyone seems to caught in some perpetual vortex of "objectivity" where nothing is ever better/worse or right/wrong. It's infuriating. It's like reading politics and whenever something happens a lot of journalists are just "Democrats and Republicans are equally at fault. STOP SAYING THEY AREN'T! EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS EQUAL!"

I'm assuming that you don't have a mid range PC, because it can do most of your points. What is the better Kinect Experience? Better sound compared to what? I don't understand you last point at all, live service being shared isn't a bullet point you can add on what makes the XB1 version more appealing, unless you mean that it make it easier for you to transition to the next console.

Only thing I can really understand being a reason to get it on XB1 is the fact that your friends will be there. Besides that there are just much more benefits to getting it on PC (where my friends and I will be playing).
