Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | October 2013 | Ver 2000, Batman and some Angry Birds

you need to uncheck the wifi power saving.

Mine is checked and works perfectly.

I see 'Use Wi-Fi in Power Save Mode' and that's checked. Isn't that what I want?

Depends -- there's a great debate on whether it's a poorly written checkbox or not it seems. Try unchecking it and see if it works any better for you.

You want it checked, it will leave Wifi on when the Vita sleeps. Try restarting also if it's cancelling your downloads, I've found PSN to be very finicky after I download a game or change anything in the system.

The catch I've found is whether or not the Vita was put into standby manually or not. Press the power button to initiate standby and it will kill it, I think. Let the screen go to sleep on it's own and it works.

Yeah, You're supposed to uncheck that ( as it save power and cut wifi during sleep mode)

Again, depends on the Vita it seems.

You folks putting Totobeni on ignore is crazy.

I never actually saw him posting anything so terribly outlandish that deserves him the spot in an ignore list.

I guess people just can't handle differing voices/bluntness for the most part.

Anyways,

That starlight inception thing looks super interesting!

Some people get sick of his almost comical negativity.
I can understand completely.

I actually thought he always provided good reasons if he's being negative to a game. And anyways, I consider his "comical negativity" a good counter to the "sugary positivity" that some people sometimes can have, hahaha.

Also, why are you breaking the tradition of top-post recommendation in VitaGAF? Fix that thing ASAP!

looking at my purchase list, I realize I will only be getting one major Vita title this year til 2014

[oct] BF4 (PC)
[nov] Tearaway (Vita)
[nov] Lightning Returns (PS3)
[nov] Senran Kagura (3DS)
[feb2014] Lightning returns (PS3)
[2014] FF X/X-2HD (Vita/PS3)
[2014] Bravely Default (3DS)

anything else noteworthy comming out this year? YS got delayed til like 2014 right?

Need to find a $14 game...to make it to $50

I need to start on this... :X

I am planning to snag Valhalla Knights 3 for this so that 10 bucks extra can be directed towards Corpse Party Books of Shadows... perhaps.

I already bought Malicious Rebirth so this should entitle me to that 10 bucks bonus, right?

But will Books of Shadows' discount still applicable by the time that 10 bucks bonus comes around?

Just got Jet Set Radio on my Vita, and holy shit, I've never felt so hit with pure nostalgia before - And I didn't even play Jet Grind Radio back in the day, I played JSRF! Seems kind of hard to control though - I don't remember JSRF being as stiff.

Also, enjoying dat cross-controller in Deus Ex.

i think Dec is still on the table.

aside from that - maybe blackgate - thats all the notable retail games i can think of....probably some downloadable ones though for sure though.

OK VitaGAF with all these spooky vibes going on in the PSN store, I'm gonna need some help....

Corpse Party or Walking Dead?

having not played CP, only read about it on gaf... i'm going to suggest that WD is a better "game" but CP may be creepier/scarier.

Did Ys really got delayed to 2014? Well, I am kind of happy with this information. Next gen will left me penniless and would be a shame to have to chose between Tearaway and Ys. In my opinion, both deserve to be bought day-1.

HOLY SHIT! why does it take so long to copy photos to the vita

i have around 900 images and it says it will take 280mins!

there just photos...

So when the hell is terraria coming out? I have it on pc but I never play it, it's the perfect game to play on a hand held though.

I have like 50 bucks on psn and I kind of want a horror game but idk of anything good. didnt want to spend the money because I was waiting for terraria but it seems like it's never coming out. Or I may just settle for minecraft...assuming that one is released.

I actually thought he always provided good reasons if he's being negative to a game.

Same here. We don't see eye to eye with P3P, but his reasonings for disliking it aren't out of this world. Others share his thoughts on the matter too.

welp i was wrong, YS comes this "holiday 2013"

Kinda interested in trying it out, but never played a YS game ever
Same here. I'm interested and haven't played a Ys game as well. Seeing that I already have a Vita backlog, I don't know if it'll get it at/around launch.

Starlight Inception wasn't as bad as I thought, but calling it good in its current incarnation is a major overstatement.
The framerate issues are the chief offender, but the space craft also control inconsistently, with seemingly random sensitivity changes.

Several of us have, including myself.
Got any questions?

Yeah. Is it worth $15 for someone who never played the original? How's the performance? How long a game is it?

Some can't handle different opinions on games or system they love I guess and I get that, and Vita community is more intense because some feel like anyone with a negative opinion is attacking them and Vita. and as you said, I give my full opinion on why I dislike a game if asked to do so, and don't do "lolz it's a shit game lolz"

and been on ignore lists is better than getting insults for no reasons at all for an example just see AgentOtaku post above (I mean.. seriously? was that needed? I'm just here give recommendation on games I played and trying to be helpful)

yeah, I've been meaning to find a backup JRPG to my current roster of usuals (FF, Poke, and to a lesser extent, SMT & DQ)

Ys looks super interesting, but never to the point of wanting to play a title. The Vita release my change that though.

side note, Been experimenting with the Tales series lately. It's bretty gud. Might import the Vita titles one of these days

side side note, Sony should re-release Dark Cloud 1/2 on Vita.

oh mang, one of the few JRPGs that took me off FF and Pokemon for a while

Yeah, especially Dark Could 2 since it's one of PS2 very best.

and again yeah, we really need more JRPGs/Action RPGs on Vita

Just take it in a stride man, hahaha.

Also, I have to admit, your avatar contributes to how I perceive your posts. I always picture that lady actually speaking and making your posts, hahaha.

What is this blasphemy. Correct your "never played a Ys title" life right now!

Cough some dough and get Ys7! Or if you want something that can REALLY make you grind your teeth and tremble with excitement, Oath of Felghana.

And correct, I will offer sacrifices for Dark Cloud 2 re-release. Don't know if Vita can handle a game of that magnitude though....? Can it? I guess it can when we have FFX already hmmm.

Corpse party is pretty creepy... Not sure how I feel about character character designs though. Don't judge my avatar, I just tales.

lol, when it comes to JRPGs, I'm kinda narrow minded.
"If it's not Final Fantasy, then I won't have that feel"
"If it's not Pokemon, it's not fun"

Like really, for me it usually takes something major or something that catches my eye to make me play another JRPG. Like because of Dante was in the game, I ended up playing Nocturne.

Ended up playing DQ because of DQxFF Itadaki PSP & all the attention Nintendo gave with the DS releases.

Ended up playing Fire Emblem because of the
waifus

etc.. etc..

I think Dark Cloud was the only JRPG that I bought willy nilly.

Downloading the YS Origin demo though on steam.

you mean the in-game characters or the cutesense/dialouges? but anyway I think they tried to keep it feel close to the original RPG Maker ones and the manga.

Incoming mini wall of text.

Malicious is a game focused on fighting various bosses in enclosed, arena-like stages. You start out by selecting an arena, which takes you to the boss immediately. The boss is usually accompanied by lesser enemies that you can use to gain Aura, which allows you to heal yourself when injured (signified by the loss of limbs on your Spirit Vessel character) or boost the power of your attacks by holding L. You can also enter a powered up state that increases your attack and defense at the cost of a constantly draining Aura gauge. This state has three levels that each offer a higher power-up at the cost of more Aura per second.
Boosting your attacks while you are in the powered up state is the best way to do damage to bosses, so you'll be collecting enough Aura to power-up by beating up enemies and then the boss. When you first start, you'll have very little tools at your disposal, but what you do have can be selected for use by using the d-pad. As you defeat bosses, you'll gain abilities and weapons from them - several of which will make combat less repetitive.
The combat itself is mainly managed through the use of square and triangle, which perform light and heavy attacks respectively. Mashing on square performs a combo or standard attack, while combining that with presses of triangle can result in more varied combos and attacks. You can even switch weapons mid-combo to access even more combos/attacks. Despite this, the combat is still fairly repetitive - with the focus being on learning the bosses attack patterns instead of attacking with variety and style.
In the end though, the basic pattern does boil down to "kill enemies for Aura -> go Super Saiyan on the boss -> repeat". The bosses themselves are varied and get stronger as you defeat other bosses. So the order in which you fight them is something to consider as you progress through the game.

Visually, the game looks great. Native resolution and a water-color-ish cel-shaded art style that just pops on the Vita's screen. Performance-wise, the game runs at 30fps, but often runs lower during boss battles - at a consistent 25 by my estimate. I didn't find too much issues playing it due to said consistency but it's by no means smooth or perfectly stable.

While Malicious Rebirth basically doubles the content of Malicious, the original wasn't exactly lengthy to begin with. You have six bosses to fight at first, five of which give you abilities. Then you have the Rebirth content, which adds an additional six bosses (and five of which give you extra abilities, again). In total, I'd say it'll take you 6-8 hours on normal if you're any good at action games.

Is it worth $15? Hard to say. I found that it was, but I would advise that you seek out some videos of this or the PS3 version to see if the gameplay looks like your cup of tea.

I learned this week that it's faster to redownload a 3GB game (on a 10Mb connection) than back it up and restore later.

I won't bother anymore. I'll only backup PSP saves and copy a few screenshots.

But you've played P4G, right? Right?!

Also, why are you breaking the tradition of top-post recommendation in VitaGAF? Fix that thing ASAP!

Good reasons? Sure... but it's how they're conveyed that tends to make people disregard him.
I find a huge difference between something like:

"I personally didn't like P3P because I wasn't as engaged without the anime-style cutscenes or the 3D exploration of the town. I didn't really have an interest in the female MC and I never had a problem with the AI for supporting party members. I think it's a better game on PS2 in it's FES incarnation."

-AND-

"P3P is the wrong way to play Persona 3, it's a horrible butchered port, anyone should avoid it and play P3 or FES, P3P is a very bad port and change so many thing like No 3D town explorations and "living" in the world with the other charachters, the removal of the animated cutscenes also remove the huge amount of the feel, awful graphics compared to P3/FES..ect and that in the end it's turned to be an abomination of a port and sadly just not a real Persona experience. new comers to the series need to learn this and just avoid it completely."

When he doesn't enjoy something, he takes it to hyperbole and beyond.
Don't get me wrong... he's entitled to his opinion, some of which I actually agree with. But the way in which he expresses them comes off a bit absurd... it's more like some sort of seething hatred-filled rage dump. :lol

And I didn't post any recommendations because it wasn't the top of the page. ;)

Need to find a $14 game...to make it to $50

Spelunky.
There's a couple good PSP choices too.

I get where you're coming from as someone who has some pretty different opinions on some popular games and I know what it's like to take heat... and while you usually do have reasons, you don't necessarily speak of them in a way that comes off as reasonable...

I think Dark Cloud was the only JRPG that I bought willy nilly.

I wouldn't call Dark Cloud a JRPG.
Man, that game was so disappointing to me. One of the handful of games I just outright gave up on because it got so repetitive. I was kind of hoping for something akin to a 3D Actraiser and it just... wasn't.

Baseline framerate in stages seems lower than 25 to me. I'd put it in the 20-23fps range before you start seeing slowdown/dips.

Have I mostly had fun with it for $15. Yes.
But I find the framerate to be unbelieveably disappointing to the point of wishing I hadn't bought it at times. It's definitely not for everyone. And watching the game on direct feed won't give you the idea of what it feels like in hand either... so beware if you're considering it.

Anyone wish we could change the screen size for PSP games like we can on PS1 games. PSP games bother me so much on vita because of how stretched out they are.

it don't bother me since it's exactly 2x the original size of PSP games, but more options are always good and wont hurt. Vita need more scaling and filtering/AA options (Vita hardware is capable of that sure it wont be like Shiled and PPSSPP but it can do something similar) so PSP games can look nicer especially now that oled is gone from new Vitas.

Edit: I didn't mean to say they'll look better on LCD, I meant they need more graphic options to look them look decent on it Vita 2000.

Wait... PSP games are going to look better on LED models?
What sorcery is this?
Won't the ghosting return?

Ah, ok. I gotcha.
Yes, they do.

But we all know how SCEA rolls -- PSP support is basically dead as far as I can tell.

it's more than just PSP support, FW team didn't really add anything in long time, PSone buttons mapping and analogue mode still need work.

maybe they'll look back to Vita after PS4 release since they are busy with it?*wishful thinking*

No. It will probably be December before the credits are handed out. Book of Shadows goes off sale before the promo is even ended.

"Starting today through October 29th, for every $50 you spend using your SEN Wallet, you’ll receive a $10 credit back (up to $100). Pick up some new games, movies, TV shows or anything else that accepts SEN Wallet funds to become eligible. If you spend $100, you’ll receive $20; spend $150, you’ll receive $30 and so on. You’ll receive your earned credit by November 8th via email and XMB Message on your PS3. "

Ok, sue me. November 8th is quicker than I thought. Sometimes these things take about a month, IIRC.
But I'll bet you there's no way that you will receive your credit before the promo ends.
So if you want Book of Shadows for $9.99, I'm guessing you're going to have to pony up for it.

Hmmmm.... no chance of BoS' discount still applicable by the time November 8th rolls huh...

So like, I have currently 42 bucks... if I buy the 1st and 2nd Corpse Party then only 22 bucks left. What can I buy with 22 bucks...

Are you trying to zero out your account or something?

Well, there's a chance that Corpse Party: BoS doesn't go back up to $20 on tuesday, since it's not part of the Sale of the Dead.

However, I'd wager it goes back up before 11/8.
I'd say it might still be there until 11/5... but I think you'd be a few days short if PSN holds true in giving the credits out on the last day possible.

Ok, what with recent Vita games and complete lack of AA?
Starlight Inception is a multiplatform indie game that has a budget of 150k$ (- possible physical pledge rewards & their postage and whatever portion Kickstarter & Amazon took from it). It's not gonna be a technical showcase and might even, SHOCKER, have some aliasing.

Guys, Motorstrom RC is free on EU PSN but shows as a Free Trial and Demo to me. I thought we were going to get the whole game =/

Talking about the online webstore here.

Well, not crazy. But it is a bit useless putting him on ignore considering he's constantly one of the top posters in any Vita thread and gets quoted non-stop.

Just want to get that 10 bucks bonus... I mean, why the hell not?

So, I already bought Malicious Rebirth, which was how much... 14.99 IIRC? 15.

42 bucks left.

Both corpse party games: 20. so that's 35 total, which will bring my wallet to 22.

What can I get to make me eligible for that 10 bucks... hmmm.
