I don't know... cheap while efficient hardware development was a result of Gunpei Yokoi and Hiroshi Yamauchi's collaboration, starting and most prominently with GameBoy. It's quite possible that Yokoi and Yamauchi were right all along. >_>

DS Sales Broken Down By day/hour/minute/second:
~93,286 per day.
~3887 per hour.
~65 per minute.
~1.08 per second.

Holy shit.

This can't be real.

Is there any other product whatsoever that has managed to sell a unit per second in an entire week?

DS succesor pushed back to 2015 confirmed?

I remember some idiots saying that they would wait until the next Game boy came out. This was right after the DS came out. Yeah, Nintendo is gonna shell out millions to make 2 handhelds and have them compete against each other, or the DS was just to keep consumers quiet until the next Game boy came out. Morons.

I kept on trying to tell them that the DS WAS the next game boy, and the change of name was just so it could appeal to a broader audience.

The change of name had to have been one of the smarter moves Nintendo made.

I also remember the endless graphic jokes. PSP has way better graphics, and it's slicker, therefore it wins, right? IMO, the only reason PSP can actually stand against Nintendo is because they have the backing of the over 100 million PS2 audience. If they didn't have that, PSP would've gone the way of all the other failed handhelds.

But what about the 100% of people who owned a game with SoulCALIBUR in its title?
Well, Soulcalibur is a proper noun. If you use the 'calibur' piece of that noun as a substitute for the actual word 'calibre' though, expect to be shot, then buried at garbage dumpster.

I agree, I thought I'd add to the joke though. :P

I think it was sometime around June 2005 or something. Nintendo wasn't allowing numbers for a looooong time, even bundling the GBA and DS hardware numbers together. Heh. Almost forgot about that.

Oh crap, I'd forgotten about that. Back then it was like PSP 150,000; DS+GBA = 190,000 or something. Crazy.

So it is not only Sony who combined things when the sales are bleak. Combining DS+GBA is better (handheld + handheld) compared to Playstation brands (PS2+PS3+PSP) but only a little bit better.

Either it can go both ways or it's been used incorrectly so long that now it can.

Alternatively, I'm entirely wrong and for that life will have revenge on me when one day "definate" becomes canonized in some dictionary. :(

I hate this. It means we won't see Nintendo's next handheld system until at least fall 2010, probably later. On the bright side it should have graphics better than the PSP at least.

If having poor 3D capabilities convinces companies like Capcom and Konami to keep making DS games with 2D sprites, I could probably last on DS until like 2011.

Umm...Those "idiots" were directly quoting Iwata, I believe, at the E3 where the DS was unveiled. Don't you remember the whole 3 pillar strategy? They said they were going to go forward with the DS and Gameboy properties seperately. After the amazing success of the DS, those plans were obviously scrapped.

EDIT: Point is, if the DS hadn't succeeded, you would already be able to buy the next Gameboy. I don't think most people realize how unsure Nintendo was when it released the DS.

Right alongside "alot".

If the long reign of the DS means more 2D, sprite-based games, then I welcome our Nintendo overlords.

But the DS has seen a scarcity of 2D sprite-based games. Almost everyone pushes for 3D on it, with a handful of exceptions amongst its prominent, quality/noteworthy games.

i very much think somebody who bought their ds with brain training or nintendogs could go on to buy core games. maybe not advance wars (doesn't have the accessibility or the big name), but certainly new super mario brothers, phantom hourglass, mario kart or something like castlevania or geometry wars galaxies.
653.000 ds in 1 week means very good growth and is good for everybody in this industry.

Not in the sense of more powerful hardware. He was talking about Game Boy Advance, which Nintendo expected to go on longer than it did (with the Game Boy Micro).

Unfortunately for GBA but fortunately for everyone else, DS wasn't a slow ramp-up like Nintendo expected. It basically murdered the GBA business.

Yeah. The GBA is totally dead now. I bet the next DS model won't even have GBA BC.

That's because it'll have it's own virtual console. It won't need any hardware BC. That way they can get you to buy the game again.

And not just old GBA games hopefully, Nintendo really should offer DS games to download online. As far as they're concerned they'll make more money - no retailer fees, and some of those savings could pass on to the consumer too. Besides, I'd love to have all my portable games on a stick or a mini hard drive in the device itself. No more carrying around games.

Knowing Nintendo though we probably won't see anything like this for 5/6 years.

Well not exactly, in the US it was quite a while before people moved on from the GBA.

Yeah, it was only Japan where the GBA died. If NCL hadn't forced Nintendo of America to essentially stop all GBA support last fall the system would still be doing quite well, I'm sure... as it is it's selling, but with some support it'd be doing much better. But the GBA had died in Japan and so Nintendo of Japan wanted to kill off the system here too in order to boost US DS sales, and so they did... but without that the GBA would still be a credible competitor. Probably still third place in the handheld race for the year, but not totally dead like it is.

In the first week of the 2007 holiday shopping season, Nintendo of America has sold more Nintendo products than at any other time in its history. This includes more than 653,000 Nintendo DS™ portable video game systems, 350,000 Wii™ home systems and millions of games and accessories throughout the United States - and the season is just getting started.

Holy shit that are some seriously impressive numbers. And that's just America alone. I already thought Nintendo would see their biggest holiday ever this year (even without Brawl), worldwide. But this is ridiculous, it's just the very beginning and only America.

What's the total DS sales in Europe? Is there an estimate on when they'll cross 50 million world wide (if they haven't already...)?
It already past 50 million 2 months ago. It shipments was 47.27 million at the end of june (!!). It officially crossed 50 million at september the 26th.

Yeah, it's fitting. When I saw the numbers I wanted someone to hold me, it's scary.

Anyway, I think people should make some new gifs for the next NPD, I'm tired of the old ones. I think november and december NPD deserve some new stuff.

I think he meant sales, not shipments. Nintendo fiscal reports was shipping numbers. I have no doubt that they have sold more than 50 million now since the DS has been selling nonstop worldwide (even in Japan where it's slowed down a little but is still kicking ass).

I bought my sister a DS last year for Christmas but had to wait for after the holiday to find a pink one just because of how freaking rare it was. She wanted it for mostly Nintendogs, Resident Evil and Brain Age but now plays New Super Mario Bros, Hotel Dusk, and Mario Kart DS.

HOLY SHIT THE ZELDA DS IS REAL?! MINE!!!! (How the hell did I miss this little tidbit of news!)

So much for my dreams of the Wii and DS selling more in the UK than in the US @_@ Wow, just wow!

As a business major, I got to appreciate Nintendo's strategy. Completely crazy, but boy did it pay off...

So, we saw some great Japanese games announcements (MH3, Fragile, King Story...), when will we see major western games announcements? I'd love to get an exclusive Tom Clancy FPS along with Red Steel 2, and a GTA compilation. I only played the 2d GTAs on the PC, I'd like to try a 3d one. Now that reminds me... We need a 2d GTA for the Wii!
