Got back from the nfl game at Wembley trains were only 5 minutes late and just a bit of heavy rain

just checked online all my trains from SE London / North Kent to london are cancelled till 10 am even if they do run i have no chance of getting on them as everyone from the stops further down the line will already be crammed on to them.

It's starting to pick up a bit now, and as of now the trains in the morning aren't running.

I'm almost tempted to just lie in bed for an extra hour, then call into work to say I'll be late...

Why is Europe seemingly unable to deal with any kind of adverse weather conditions? I remember a few years ago when I had a trip planned to Paris and flights were being cancelled left and right due to snow. My flight landed on time, and when I got out there was maybe .5-2 inches of snow on the ground.

I need to be at work at 8.45 tomorrow morning... At the moment all trains prior to 9.56 are cancelled. No way I'll be at work before 11.30 at the earliest I recon. Could well be a day off I think.

Because unlike somewhere like norway or northern USA, events like heavy snow fall are incredibly rare and thus not worth the expense of having snow plows and other such fallbacks in place all year round.

When they do happen, we have nothing to help us out with, so the country goes to a standstill. No one understands how to drive in said conditions, so roads are closed, etc

At least we can sleep knowing our houses won't get blown off as they aren't made off wood :P

But yea, the reason behind that is that it's rare and hence a waste of money to build an infrastructure around something rare.

I live on the Severn Estuary coast between the two Severn bridges, smack bang in the path of Uberstorm. Been out side for the past ten minutes and it's raining normally but there's not a breath of wind. It's calmer right now than it's been for over a week. This is obviously the calm before the storm, as the old Severn Bridge is already closed and they just said on Radio 5 that the Second Severn Crossing will close at 3am. Anyone wanting to get between South Wales and the West Country tomorrow has a nice eighty mile diversion around Gloucester.

Where abouts in East London? That's where I am and there's only moderate rain.

MODERATE RAIN, I REPEAT, MODERATE RAIN, PEOPLE

I was in Stratford at the time, driving back home in Bow. It was pretty heavy at the time,
kind of died off a little now, at least.

Huh. I'm pretty much in Stratford. Must've just missed us lol

Thankfully it's really not very windy atm. Was way worse this morning on the Greenway.

It didn't last too long.

It's not windy at all here, at all.

Apparently SW will have it around midnight then it'll tear through East London probably around 1-2am. Could be earlier/later.

Rain has literally just picked up though, lol.

My usual London Midland train is cancelled, so I'm at the tender mercies of First Great Western tomorrow. Marvellous.

It's raining heavily in Brizzle, but nothing else to report. Nighty night, fellow countrymen!

absolutely nothing happening here, live down south too

Sad, i like storms

Still nothing but a little rain, you can't even hear it from inside.

You don't know what you're talking about. It makes a huge difference.

Man being made of brick and stone really helped this house during Sandy.

How are you guys doing? Holding up well? I'm drinking a couple of G&T's in your honor.

2/3 of that house survived. Not bad. Although I don't see a lot of brick and stone, looks cheap.

See that pile of red stuff on the left?

It may be brick and stone, but it looks like it still adheres to the cheap as shit American way of building.

Given the federal design style of the home that house is probably near 200 years old.

I don't think you are quite grasping what 150+ mph winds can do. Sandy wasn't that but Katrina maxed out at 175mph sustained winds. It doesn't matter what your house is made of if you take a direct hit from that.

You have to mention also that it's not the wind thats the main damage maker, it's the debris the wind takes with it.

Wind itself doesn't do much, but when you have a few large pieces of trees flying at said speed then the damage becomes substantial.

Americans have no idea how poorly constructed our buildings and infrastructure are. Our power, plumbing and roads are an international embarrassment but we think our shit can't possibly stink. Oh and we insist on not burying cables, so we lose power every time the wind blows.

Sky News claims peak time will be 4:00am.

Expect a shitstorm basically.

It appears the South Coast is taking a beating?

The rain is torrential here, and the wind's sort of getting there.
