Your personal life ceases to be personal when you are posting it all over the internet. Many people list the place of employment on their facebook/twitter/whatever. They are representing their employers when they post dumb shit, whether they mean to or not. This is why so many employers are now screening for social media in the hiring process, because people can't help themselves from being dumbfucks. If I owned a company, I would not want someone posing in racist ass pictures at the same time associating themselves with my brand/company. It's bad for business. It also says a lot about their judgement, which is important in the workplace.

They should have known better. When you post it on Facebook, it no longer becomes part of your personal life...it's public, and it has the capacity to offend and hurt people. Because the name of their employer was on their Facebook page, this casual racism would be essentially endorsed by the company unless they dealt the employee adequate punishment.
I can't say I've fired any one over something like this, but I most defiantly wouldn't ever hire someone this fucking stupid.

THey should have expected it, otherwise they are not very smart and are exercising terrible judgment. Both things that matter in the hiring process and should matter to employers. If someone is stupid enough to paint their face black and pose in some horribly racist/insensitive pictures, what other stupid shit might they do while they are on the clock, on my dime? Insult a black customer? Get my ass sued for racial discrimination? Not taking that chance.

It's not about what they "deserve" (and considering how stupid they are, I doubt losing whatever job they had would constitute "life ruining". We aren't talking doctors or lawyers here), it's simply the consequences of their actions. Even if it is, to play devil's advocate, a complete overreaction, that's on them for not taking 2 seconds to realize that people might "overreact" to their stupidity. That is 100% on them.
