PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Are you getting rid of your ps3? does it stop working when the ps4 comes out?

Lol you can apply that argument to virtually anything can you not see how awful that line of thinking is. Oh subscription fee for friends list I see do you not have your PS3 still connected?

I never really listened to music on my PS3 ever, and I never (except at the very beginning) listened to music in the background on 360.

I'm not fond of not having the option, but I can't honestly say I was going to use these features in the first place.

Being able to import and play MP3's makes games like MLB The Show more realistic.

I cannot imagine booting up that game and NOT being able to import my customized playlists and music.

That really fucking sucks.

I don't even play music on my PS3, or use background music on my PS3, but still, it sucks.

Personally, I prefer to hear the music the game creators created while playing a game, but some portable games I'll listen to my own music to while I play (like Valhalla Knights 3; I'll have my music playing while grinding).

Maybe this is something they can address later, I don't know. Sorry to all the people who actually use this feature.

This is really depressing to see, PS3 was such a great multimedia machine, and I guess its gonna continue to be my main multimedia device in the future. Still do streaming via PS3 media server tons.

Even so, looking forward to getting PS4 day one, but this makes me really sad. Whats the point of playing music in the background if you can't play your music?

So, I'm guessing Sony's Music Unlimited service won't have stuff like music from Ace Attorney, Castlevania, Deadly Premonition and the NES Ninja Gaidens...

Cause that's what I like to listen to with custom soundtracks. :(

One of the reasons I prefer GTA V on 360 is custom soundtracks. Listening to Pilotwings music while flying across Los Santos is just PERFECT.

Really?? That's sacrilege. GTA games have some of the best music ever. One of the only reason I would consider playing the latest one.

I guess that kind of rules out us bringing KickBeat to PS4, since one of the big features is being able to import your mp3s...

DLNA thing really sucks. I hate having to fumble around with remotes and turn off one HT component and turn on another one when I want to switch between games and netflix and media server &c.

People in here are really trying hard to excuse this garbage. There's no need to take this ultra extreme position because you want to protect or justify a multimillion dollar company

The people cancelling their preorders over this are fucking pathetic.

"Sony's making a console for the gamers! that focuses on games!"
"preorders"
"OMG NO MP3 PLAYBACK???? EVERY DEVICE I OWN PLAYS MP3s I NEED THIS ONE TO PLAY MP3s AS WELL!!!!"
"Cancels preorder"

Temperamental, whiny babies, that look to bitch and complain at the slightest opportunity, and seek to turn every slight into a world ending catastrophe that requires a Che Guevara level sacrifice or struggle. No wonder game companies are chasing casuals, the hardcore of this thread are illustrating they are simply not worth the effort to appease. They get 99.9 percent of the system right, but that slight .01 is wrong so fuck the whole thing!

Having said that, fuck this decision, it's a clear effort to milk money out of playstation owners and support their middling Music Unlimited. I guess I'll listen to my iPad/iPhone/iPod if I want music during games - The things I would use if I wanted music anyway.

Holy shit no DLNA support? Are you kidding me? Welp.... that changes things
How does that change things. You would cancel a new gaming system because it does not have DLNA support out the door? PS3 did not either. They will patch this in at a later date. If they couldn't/wouldn't get their own Pulse headsets running for launch, you think they are going to bother with DLNA support?

Pretty much. These things could very well be patched in as well. I used the DLNA on my PS3 a bit and would have loved to see it at launch, but QQ'ing over this stuff to the point of actually cancelling a pre-order? That's just sad.

I'll still be using my PS3 anyway so it's not a huge deal. Some of you need to get a grip. lolmp3.

Removing that capability to try and push me into a subscription music service has sapped the wind from my sails.

I wouldn't have minded as much if they'd said there wasn't time to implement it, or they didn't think users wanted it, or pretty much ANY reason other than pushing MU subs.

I had a quick look on MU, my 3 favourite albums of all time are on there.

Each is the horrible volume-amped remaster. Yuck.

You're not serious, are you? What about the lots of other people that do use them?

I just want to play games the way they were made, buy more games and movies on the services they offer and that's really about it. Peripheral things like syncing my computer to my PS4, hooking up external hard drives, etc......are all things I do on my computer, I don't need to do them on my gaming machine.

I understand they are features people like, they just aren't features I've ever cared about. I just plain don't need my game machine to do those things. And who knows, maybe Sony will open some of those options up as time goes by. I'm just not gonna be worried about this stuff at launch. We've seen both companies continue to monitor their policies and adjust, no reason Sony can't on these things.

MP3 was almost certainly purposeful everything and I mean everything and it's mother can run MP3's. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if there was toasters and baths that could run the damn thing.

http://www.embeddedarm.com/software/arm-netbsd-toaster.php

USB speakers are attached through the built-in USB hub on the keyboard to allow playing of MP3's while toasting occurs.

The rumours that toasting features are behind a paywall are still unconfirmed.

Was expecting 25 pages of "I'm okay with this."
Happy to be partially disappointed.

This is like the complete opposite of allowing custom sound tracks in every game, which is something I was hoping the PS4 might allow.

Thanks, Cerny.

How many people in this thread have actually cancelled a pre-order because of this? Two? You're making it sound like it's hundreds.

Its pretty insane when you think about everything that can play mp3's but this 400 dollar machine won't let you

Why must it? when everything else does? is it worth the 2 dollars per unit they spend? if they pump out 10 million units by march, that's 20 million! If you add up all the kickstarter money for games worth playing, how many could that 20 million cover?

It's a fringe usage in an age where everything else has that function. Fuck it.

I don't even have this system preordered, I can't afford it - but this non-issue, this seemly signal flare for the manbabies/Richard Stallman-wannabes/I-need-to-rage-at-something-while-picking-cheeze-its-out-of-my-neck-beard circus is pathetic!

I know you signed up for 5 years of music unlimited but damn son.

I bet MS would beg to differ.

MS can differ on this all they want but no one has ever touched Naughty Dog when it comes to 3rd person single player games (see U2 and TLOU). There is nothing MS will ever be able to do to match what Bruce, Neil, Amy and the crew at Naughty Dog will come up.

Microsoft really needs to put up a video showing how you play Mp3s on the Xbone.

If they can get their UI to hold up long enough to actually get it to work.

It would be hilariously amazing payback for E3, I'd love to see that.

Apparently I spoke too early. Is Wario's tweet true? The Xbone doesn't support mp3 or DLNA either. What the hell man.

Gamers complain a lot, sure... but this is just straight up dickery on Sony's part. It's not even a hardware issue. It's like... "Yeah would could easily do this but FUCK YOU."

I understand if people don't care, but the issue truly is indefensible.

This "issue" is completely defensible for reasons I have stated about cost, and fringe usage.

I can understand why people some people are upset. Sony is taking away features that the PS3 had. Why would a next gen system have LESS features than its predecessor?

The PS4 is seemingly just going to be a pure gaming machine this time around like the PS1/PS2 and do away with more multimedia features. This is a good and bad thing. On one hand, it puts all of the horsepower and focus towards games. On the other, it eliminates features that some of us are used to and makes it seem like a step back.

Are you getting rid of your ps3? does it stop working when the ps4 comes out?

What a silly argument, not everyone wants to keep old consoles lying around, and many will have them in different rooms for blu-ray or gift them to family. I understand this doesn't affect you, but can you see that it's leaving a bad taste in other people's mouth?

I personally pop on some music regularly when cooking or if friends are around and the integration into Wipeout HD was fantastic so I'd like to see more of that.

This "issue" is completely defensible for reasons I have stated about cost, and fringe usage.
I don't listen to music=nobody should ever want to listen to music.

Got it.

Do you have any data to support that music playback is "fringe usage" or did you pull that out of your ass?

Dis the WiiU support dlna?

Just occurred to me that now that my 360 is gone and I was planning on trading in the ps3 I will not have a device that supports dlna on my main tv.

I really did not see this coming

Are you getting rid of your ps3? does it stop working when the ps4 comes out?

This is a terrible argument. Absolutely awful. You can't seriously think it's acceptable for new consoles to deny features simply because you have an older version that does it. Would you be happy if you bought a new computer and someone said, "Oh, it wont use iTunes unless you pay for it. But your old laptop does. You'll be fine."

If you're going to respond with something along the lines of, "it's fine I don't use iTunes!" Don't bother. It's an analogy.

Okay, now I really hope Titanfall causes a surge in Xbone sales and lights a fire under Sony's ass. Maybe that will cause them to backtrack on this stupid shit.

They seemed to be doing everything right, putting consumer rights at the top of their agenda - but this feels like classic 2000s Sony, doing something to try and grow some other section of the company at the expense of a basic feature.

Very weird and very stupid.

What the fuck is this shit? No mp3 playback? My fucking toaster plays mp3s for crying out loud.

Way to blow.

And MS too? What the fuck...they have the same doofus working on this stuff for both companies?

Music Unlimited actually does have game soundtracks. Not all of them, obviously, but, there's a channel dedicated to them.

Question though, PSP also did not support mp3 files, but supported mp4 files. So is this a straight up no to ALL personal music? Or is this just a straight up no to the mp3 file format only?
