PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

I... uh... doesn't play mp3? Embarrassing Sony.

If it doesn't play videos then double fuck you and no buy. I actually use my consoles a lot to play music and video files.
 
Some folks act like they took away super audio CDs capabilities. It's MP3s a format that is ubiquitous. It's not some crazy underground file format that's only used for questionable reasons. The largest digital stores in the world sell droves of them.

If people cancel their pre-order at least they saved money which is usually never a bad thing.
 
Not good by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't play music while I play games so I don't really care.

I used the DLNA stuff on PS3 to stream photos / video / music from my NAS. I would have liked to do that with PS4. The truth is that many TVs already do that though.

PS2 could play CDs and .mp3s.
 
Although these days using a console to play music over your television is kinda... Whatever. It's not that important. Everything plays music and has speakers now. It's kinda dumb to paywall this feature.
 
The only videos I have saved on my PS3 are MP4 (I think) preview videos of Japanese games from the Japanese PS store. Are they saying even MP4's won't work. No more downloading preview vids?

Because it's a 400 dollar machine that prob cost like 800 dollars to make. There's no reason for it not to play mp3's. What if someone doesnt own anything that cna play mp3's and this is their first "multimedia" device. There's no justification for the removal of this feature, that extra 2 dollars out a multimillion dollar company to provide a common service isnt going to bankrupt them. Why should the consumer have to worry about their costs anyway?
 
this is pathetic. They should allow apps to be installed that do basic things such as playing MP3s and streaming videos over a home network. They are just asking more people to set up a PC in their living room which ultimately means less 3rd party licensing revenue.

PS1/PS2 can play audio cd's. And PS4 can play blu rays and other apps like netflix. This has nothing to do with being a a pure gaming machine or diverting resources into horsepower. It has everything to do with Sony pushing Music Unlimited.

Fucking shameful money grab by sony. By the gamers for the gamers my ass. Obviously I'm still getting my ps4, but this is indefensible, right up there or worse than any of the Bone shenanigans to this point.

And you know, many people who play driving games in cockpit decided not to pick up Grid 2. Is that strange to you?

Sony's well within their rights to remove features or put them behind paywalls. And to the extent that those decisions negatively impinge on a user's experience those users are more than reasonable to skip out on that product.

For those of you that don't realize it, there are hints in the PS4 FAQ thread that a lot of this functionality could be making an appearance soon, just not for launch. Page 18 FYI.
 
This is really disgusting... I assume if there's no mp3 support, we can sit on avi mkv etc...
WTF is this shit? Bring on the PS4 CFW guys.
 
Play music on my ps3 all the time sucks that this isn't supported. Music Unlimited doesn't have all the songs I would want to listen to anyways, I use the service now and it is good for stuff I don't have but can't replace my own stuff.

Having said that, fuck this decision, it's a clear effort to milk money out of playstation owners and support their middling Music Unlimited. I guess I'll listen to my iPad/iPhone/iPod if I want music during games - The things I would use if I wanted music anyway.

Wow, yuck!

This isn't quite a make or break feature, but I'm still really angry about this. Needs some serious patching. My whole music library is comprised of mp3; that they can't (or won't) support it is pathetic.


Come on Sony, what is this?

It IS an excuse, but what I said is still true. The popularity of a feature IS a factor, and saying it's the same as producing a car without AC is not accurate.

Also removing Linux was arguably worse, since it was present in a product one already bought and then removed from that. However it was such a barely used feature that it ended being footnote. MP3 playback is not that.
 
I know "preorder canceled" is a running joke, but yeah. I already canceled by Xbone preorder around September. I've also canceled any game and accessory preorders I had for the PS4. With Watchdogs and Driveclub being delayed, and now this, I'm going to need to think about whether or not I want to cancel my PS4 preorder entirely and wait until next summer when some of this mess will hopefully be straightened out for the better. I think I might just get a new graphics card or use the money for something unrelated to games.
 
So VitaTV officially has more media capability for your personal music than PS4. In fact, every Playstation device that has ever been built is capable of playing more of your personal music than PS4. This is the first playstation system that has ever existed that is incapable of playing your personal music collection, whether that be Compact Disc or mp3/mp4.


Way to fucking strip out features you've had for nearly 20 years, Sony.

This is a really astute observation. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this was part of the thinking behind the lack of MP3s during game play.

That doesn't explain the lack of support for playing MP3s with the PlayStation Dynamic Interface, though.
 
So fucking greedy sometimes Sony. Some things are not acceptable. Don't bring the gaming division down because your music app is unpopular.

Arcade stick/racing wheel bullshit all over again.

Sorry but I laughed pretty hard at that. It's the same with my friends who complain about their iPhone's whether it's about the terms of service, location tracking etc. yet buy the new one when their contract is up like clockwork. They act like they don't have a choice.
