PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

It's looking more and more like both consoles are being rushed out and not thought out very well as obvious by missing features and firmware updates needed to even turn features on.

It's insane that we are half a month out from the release and we are just now learning these kind of things.

good thing i keep all my old consoles, shit my ps2 can read mp3's off a usb stick and read my pc files with samba.guess my ps3 will be next to the ps4 for this reason

Yep, I already have an empty place ready for mine.

I currently have:
PS2 Slim->Component+Optical
PS3 SuperSlim->Component+Optical
X360->Component+Optical
PC(GTX760)->HDMI
& will have PS4->HDMI

This. And I think Kagari's right, looking at the types of things getting finalized fast all at the same time in the first update, I'm hoping it's just priority during the launch crunches, they really should have said "not at this time" or just say "coming later" rather than "no" to avoid headache. DLNA is more important in my opinion than direct mp3 but they really should both be there.

Kagari isn't referring to anything getting patched in in the future.

I'm one of the people that uses my PS3 for streaming all the time, so I'm disappointed.

Not cancelling my preorder or anything, but I'm genuinely curious as to why the PS4 doesn't support it.

I was going off this:

Which is apparently unconfirmed.

Can someone do a comparison chart between the PS4 and Xbox One?

Listen to music...

Okay, now you're just trolling. So because people have iPhones and can listen to music on them, it makes it totally acceptable to remove such features from the PS4? Get out of here with this bullshit. Quit defending anti-consumer policies and blaming the consumers for being "entitled" to features that have been set as a standard.

It's a feature that I've never used. A home console is not the right place to play your mp3s.

My home consoles are a) in the living room where I often listen to music and b) attached to the best sound system in my home. Why isn't that the right place to play my mp3s again?

Probably priorities. If it comes after release then good. Pretty sure both platforms will make strides in terms of features and efficiency.

Yes? I've been listening to music from my phone with my sound bar for awhile now. Does anyone actually use the default sound on HDTVs? I'm not joking.

No that doesn't quite work. People here would prefer to copy music onto the PS4 instead of playing the same music from their phone/tablet streamed into their stereo.

Already known!
Certain parts of the game can't be recored if the devs don't want it.
I don't mind this at all. It means certain parts of a game can only be seen by actually getting there. It could stand to make some things feel more important depending on how developers might use it.

Lack of .mp3 support is disgusting though. I hope enough people complain about it to get them to reconsider.

People emphasise different features when they come to choose a console. For most the games are the dealbreakers, others prioritise controllers they're more comfortable with, and some consider multimedia functionality the swinger.

To get pissy at any group for having different priorities shows a startling lack of empathy. Not all indications of potential cancelled pre-orders are the result of petulance, some are genuine reactions based on what the consumer expected from their purchase.

I'm not cancelling my pre-order, but i won't say i'm not disappointed at features i was looking forward to being omitted.

I have many devices that'll play MP3s, but i tend to game with closed headphones on, so having a custom soundtrack and the game's audio play through one set of cans without stuffing smaller earbuds in and feeling uncomfortable was a feature i was looking forward to on the PS4.

Hopefully that's the case. It's not like I'm getting rid of PS3 anytime soon (Dark Souls 2, FF lightning and such), but I really do want the streaming support.

I guess I should stop being a peasant and start buying some sound bars and speakers.

Heck, I play on my monitor, what HDTV.

The DLNA support coming (based on Kagari's message) is relieving enough but hopefully they can get some kind of music format/s supported.

I've been listening to my music streaming from my PS3 to my $2000 martin logan speakers. Does anyone actually use shitty soundbars for listening to music? I'm not joking.

Competition is NOT always good contrary to popular belief.

Hmmm? So then what is she saying? It seems like she's saying that it could come and it's not worth overreacting, whether it's still possible before launch or after wasn't really what I was thinking about, just that the "no" may not be permanent.

Sony have not revealed their entire hand is what she is saying. These reactions are going to be hilarious to look back on.

Yeah, I really doubt either company would just get rid of DLNA or some kind of pc->console streaming solution. I definitely am not surprised that one or both won't have solutions ready for launch.

Not playing local MP3 just seems weird. It kind of ruins my plan to have an external harddrive and leave my console up at the cabin this Christmas. We don't have PCs there, so DLNA is useless. I was hoping we could use my music and movie library on the console for our nightly movie watching/board-game drinking time!

Very similar feelings to my own. I've easily had a hundred house parties powered by my PS3 and an external hard drive filled with music and movies/shows.

Unfortunately, media playback AND external drives aren't supported on PS4... at launch. If this comes in a firmware update a year down the line, which it should, then I'll not have any qualms.

Wow this is almost hard to believe. I made a thread about the lack of music CD playback news but this news is even worse, no CD, no MP3, no media server capabilities, no external hdd, you simply can't listen to music of any kind on PS4 unless you start subscribing. And don't start with the "you get lots of content for free when you subscribe" bullshit as with PS+. This is unacceptable.
Online paywall
Music paywall
What's next? Backwards compatibility paywall and $150 a year in total for subs?
