PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

A plex client would be fantastic. I wonder though how the PS4's browser will be, I guess maybe it's possible you could stream videos/mp3s on that with HTML5/flash? Not exactly ideal, but I wonder if that could also play audio in the background...probably not. :/

I really hope someone tries to access the web version of plex through a ps4/xbone at launch to see if they work at all.

Shu's only not getting torn apart because people generally like him and don't think he's a mindless shill. If, for example, Penello were to put out such a statement the reaction would be the exact opposite.

Penello doesn't issue sincere statements. He issues vagaries and falsities.

it's also important to note that Shu is actually in a position to know what he's talking about as well as get things done if he really wants to make it a priority.

Penello and Nelson have been proven to be PR mouthpieces who feed us a company line and not much else.

the point of the peeps is that while the news is disappointing, it's nowhere near a dealbreaker for them (and for most people). your thread was an overreaction.

the point of sony is that it will potentially make music unlimited a rival to spotify. they are making a business decision, and while it may suck for a lot of people, sony figures no one is gonna lose sleep over it.

I suppose you missed the point that people don't just want to play commerical music.

Try to find bassline, bmore club or bashment mixtapes on spotify.

Or 1960s ragga..

Or remix albums...

Or DJ sets

Or pirate radio station recordings....

Or rave tape packs...

While you are at it, try and find UK road rap

or screw music

What about my own recorded tracks?

what about audiobooks?

what about podcasts?

what about voice recordings?

Hell, most game soundtracks aren't even on there.

Music unlimted is actually very limited in what it can offer by its very nature.

I couldn't give a fuck about if they can offer the same crappy britney spears records as spotify. I listen to alot more diverse music and general audio than that.

People are really cancelling their pre-order because of no mp3 or dlna support? Now I've seen it all.

I had no preorder to cancel, thanks to amazon. But I was literally about to re-preorder when I read the FAQ. Now, Sony can honestly do one. Im not buying a PS4 until its patched in.

The thing is I have a million devices that do this. Its the principle that pisses me off. I can't listen to my own shit just because you think Ill pay you to use your streaming service instead?
FUCK. YOU.

If the PS4 didn't play MP3 fullstop, I would of been pissed but accepted it. The fact they intentionally gimped the system to sell a service puts me right off.

I use DLNA a lot too but since when in this hype train machine for any of these next gen platforms has any of this type of stuff come up until now as if it matters the most right now.

Why would any mention it before now? It's something we just take for granted at this point.

If I buy a new house I don't get excited that there will be running water... I just expect it to be there. If it's not, then I'm very likely to mention it.

Ummm... Because I don't have an anime/jRPG mp3 collection nor the money to really want to put one together. Any other suggestions?
Yeah, if you don't have a collection of music I can see a service being compelling, as a choice.

Sorry for the overplus of saltiness from this general direction. Still a little flabbergasted over here with today's shitty news.

Shu's only not getting torn apart because people generally like him and don't think he's a mindless shill. If, for example, Penello were to put out such a statement the reaction would be the exact opposite.

Which is my point. Microsoft needs to lock Major Neslon away in a closet somewhere and only let him out for press events etc. Get somebody like Phil Spencer or Marc Whitten to be their public face.

And there it is... exactly what sony wanted and it's WORKING. here's why they did it.

Well...it's still no replacement though. It's not even as good as Spotify's library. Even if it's the only way to listen to music on the PS4, and it's still the only streaming service on the Vita, I don't know if I'll keep my subscription. The price is just a bit too high to justify when I'm also paying for Spotify that I use much more anyway. And no local playback kinda soured me a bit, I'd be fine with cancelling my subscription just for that. HOPEFULLY they'll realize their mistake, and announce that they'll add in mp3/dlna support, even if it won't be in right at launch, or I probably will cancel the subscription. I was thinking of cancelling after this year anyway, only reason I had it in the first place was because it was only $12...I don't think it's worth much more than $30.

Look, I'm not getting a PS4 or anything, but seriously? This is a big deal? I had no idea people listen to some outside music while they are playing games. An I certainly had no idea that they absolutelu MUST do that, and on the same device no less.

People are really cancelling their pre-order because of no mp3 or dlna support? Now I've seen it all.

E3: "Well, there was no killer app, but it's only $400 and XB1 has shitty DRM. May as well preorder now; I can always cancel later. Maybe there will be something cool at TGS."

TGS: "Gee, no new Japanese stuff for launch. But Resogun looks pretty cool, and I guess I could get Watch Dogs on PS4 instead of PC, and even though I'm not really into driving sims it would probably be fun to fuck around in Driveclub PS+ for a few hours. Should be a solid enough launch."

Watch Dogs and Driveclub are delayed: "Well, maybe Knack will be alright? Anyway I use my PS3 for streaming video and music a lot, and that stuff should be more convenient on PS4 because of standby mode. Plus it will probably have a cool new visualizer. I guess that's enough of an excuse not to sell my preorder on ebay."

Shu's only not getting torn apart because people generally like him and don't think he's a mindless shill. If, for example, Penello were to put out such a statement the reaction would be the exact opposite.

If Shu was Penello he would have tried to damage control the situation with an avalanche of PR FUD and lies, something in the lines of "PS4 has unprecedented music support and it supports advanced MP3 format through our Music service". Instead he said he forwarded the concerns to the development team. Not great but at least he doesn't treat us like idiots.

While we're on the topic, just how big is Music Unlimited's catalogue? I considered subscribing last year but my main gripe with these services is their lack of alternative artists.

Which is my point. Microsoft needs to lock Major Neslon away in a closet somewhere and only let him out for press events etc. Get somebody like Phil Spencer or Marc Whitten to be their public face.

I'm ok with that. You don't even have to let him out for press events.

I guess I was focusing more on that good PR is a long game. Someone has to build that trust. Shu's tweet helped not because of when/how he tweeted, but because people believe that something will/might happen now that it has his attention.

Im sorry but this is one of the dumbest moves in all of console history. I use the streaming service but f you Sony I would like to play my own mixes and tracks when I like while gaming. Who the F thinks of this BS?

You're probably right, but let's pretend he suddenly got good at PR and put out something like Shu. I still don't think it would have helped.

In game or not, my ps3 is the primary music player in my house. I stream my humongous itunes library to it since it's hooked up to my receiver etc.

I don't even know how some of you get by considering this is a games console first.

I use DLNA a lot too but since when in this hype train machine for any of these next gen platforms has any of this type of stuff come up until now as if it matters the most right now.

Let me know if this is an issue come next year when this kind of reaction is a thing of the past since it will be all about the games.

All I can say is I will be ignoring the Music Unlimited service if I can't play my own tunes. I'm still as excited as I was a month ago for the PS4. I don't know why this would change anything.

If people have been on board since the reveal then I sure hope it's not because of MP3's and DLNA. Features will come and at a frequent clip. Games are what I care about first. And a functional OS that is fast. PS4 is at that point right now even in dev minus some things being worked on leading into the launch.

If it's a games console first, why did they remove functionality that has just been 'accepted' and offer a PAID music service to replace it? If it's all about the games, why even offer a solution? Oh yeah, because Sony considers it a media device as much as anybody does. It plays games and is a media device. My "Phone" would be almost worthless to me if I couldn't read emails on it. I don't call it my "email device". It's still a phone. Videogame machines stopped being "game machines" this generation with the advent of Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, and almost every other ability and program I have across all my devices ALSO being on them.

I'm irritated. I'm not going to cancel and I'm not 'much' less excited about my pre-order. In fact I took a 4 day weekend to bask in its glory. But being able to play MP3's or custom soundtracks (especially during racing games) is something I expected.

I thought this was just a "thing" to be expected in these devices. Like if a new smartphone came out that didn't play music/MP3's ... "BUT IT'S A PHONE MACHINE!" is a fucking stupid excuse.

If that was you, then you might want to just keep your PS3 and upgrade your PC.

Maybe Sony just got tired of paying the licensing fee for including an MP3 decoder in their kits? Perhaps they figure this time around they can cut that out while pushing their own service as an alternative and make a little more money down the road. It's ballsy to be sure, but better to start out on that foot and backtrack down the road if it turns out not to be working out for them, then give us everything but decide to nip-tuck at system functionality as the years go by like we had with the PS3.

Also, maybe they'll include playback functionality for royalty free codecs like FLAC.

And to those clamoring for a twitter tantrum... This issue is not even in the same universe as the PS4NoDRM campaign.

It's the exact same thing; pay attention. In both cases you're asking a business not to screw you because you're a paying customer. Actually, it's pretty much the same thing because in both cases its screwing about with the concept of ownership.

I stream movies and music from my Mac to the PS3 all the time, so this is actually a big deal to me. What the hell were they thinking?

Pretty sure I read it in a SonyXDevEurope post that they were working on bringing that over as well as in a PSblog post.(At work those are blocked here so can't find source)

I suppose you missed the point that people don't just want to play commerical music.

I couldn't give a fuck about if they can offer the same crappy britney spears records as spotify. I listen to alot more diverse music and general audio than that.

This is very important. While I do agree that these services, SMU and Spotify offer up crap in monetary payment to the artists that upload their songs on those services they can offer us just a buy and download approach if we don't want to stream.

Look, I'm not getting a PS4 or anything, but seriously? This is a big deal? I had no idea people listen to some outside music while they are playing games. An I certainly had no idea that they absolutelu MUST do that, and on the same device no less.

It's not a big deal, but it's something that has been a non issue on PC for years. Can't remember when I actually listened to the games music only when playing. Don't get me wrong many games have great music but after hearing the same tune for 30+ hours you kinda want to get away from it. And while just muting your game music and turning on something else isn't that hard it shouldn't be needed in this day and age.

I know that not every feature from one gen is carried over to the next, but when features are removed that my toaster could provide.....color me unimpressed. How helpful to provide a paid alternative though, very humanitarian. Not that they are compelled to be mind. No dealbreaker for me, just very shoddy.

Then you should still be mad because the system has shit for games. So if its a games-first console, it's failing at the one thing it was supposed to excel at. How is this not unacceptable?

Can't even fuck around with the wallpaper while you're waiting for infamous to come out.

Add...whelp, there really isn't a secret GTAV coming out on the ps4 anytime soon...and that's exactly my conversation with myself.

WAIT, wait, wait, wait...
I might've miss understood and misread...

Are they "just" talking about "Background music", while playing games??!!
Or Generally,
listening to music on Playstation 4.

If it's Background music while playing a game. That's fine by me. The novelty wore off long ago, but if it's listening to music generally on the Playstation 4 by restricting Mp3s and Music Cd, then that's stupid.

Nope music in general.

Any device you buy includes the license for these things in the pricing. Sony wants people to subscribe to their service. They want more of your money. This is anti-consumer. There are benefits to their service for consumers, but in the end this move is still anti-consumer.

Right. So if they can cut down even a little on how much of a loss they are taking on each unit sold by not having to pay the licensing fee for the decoder plus put their own service front and center, that's an option that is completely legitimate. Like I said, it's clear what the intent is. Time will tell if it pans out and they see the kind of increase in service subscribers that they are angling for. I won't be one of them, but then again playing MP3s from my PS3 is a feature I've only used once.

I'd probably be kicking up more of a fuss if the MP3 format were a royalty free format that Sony was locking out in order to force-funnel people to their service, but it's not so...

I do wonder if there are going to be any day one apps ala hulu, netflix, etc. Sony sure is really tight lip on these things. I wouldn't be surprise if MS counter these things in a few days.

The way I understood it was no ripped music from CDs or MP3s. :-/ I hope they clarify that.

You're probably right, but let's pretend he suddenly got good at PR and put out something like Shu. I still don't think it would have helped.

Penello was actually quite welcomed by this community at first. Only after he started spreading bullshit and excuses about XO's power people started calling him out. Actually, at first, when he started doing that most people gave him the benefit of the doubt until he intensified his efforts.

It flat out cannot play music CD's.

you're putting words into their mouths now.

Just because Music Unlimited is there and MP3 playback isn't, doesn't mean anyone intentionally gimped anything. It could simply be that Sony prioritised their service over MP3. Which would still be a bit shitty but doesn't mean some grand conspiracy to prevent people playing their own music.

Profit motive isn't a grand conspiracy. Its common sense. They didn't accidentally a whole subscription service where the mp3 support was supposed to be.

And they haven't said mp3 support is delayed. They said it isn't supported, at all. Period.

How hard is it to include a feature that has existed in every single Playstation console since 1995? It's not like Sony ran out of time or couldn't figure it out in time for launch. It was deliberately left out.

I know it is being pedantic - but they haven't removed anything - they just haven't put it in (yet?). Just because a feature is on the PS3 doesn't automatically mean it'll be on PS4 at launch. It took PS3 years to build up some of the features it has now.

MP3 is a particularly 'wtf' one to miss though.

A step back from the PS3. I'm seriously considering passing on my pre-order and seeing if support gets patched in. My PS3 is hooked to my receiver and, as others have stated, is my primary music player.

One thing I found out today was that so many people use their PS3 as their main music player. I just thought everyone would mainly use their PC.

Music Unlimited has a shit user interface across any device I've used it on, really not user friendly. Spotify works because its simple and smooth.

So all those hundreds and hundreds of CDs I've lovingly ripped into mp3, then re-ripped into high quality aac, and am currently going through ripping them again into lossless can be played on my PS3, but won't be able to be played on the PS4 unless I pay a fee for a service I don't want or need. Yeah... No... Screw you Sony, really, I can stream music via bluetooth to my fridge from my trainers these days

Pre-Order cancelled...

Not really, but it's a bloody poor show that they are nixing features on the current gen, maybe not everyone uses them or needs them, but if it was in the last console it should be in the new console. All sounds a bit like apples blu-ray bag of hurt silliness.

Talking of which, the blu-ray player better support all the lossless codecs when playing 3D movies (DTS and Dolby), I don't think they've announced the full blu-ray spec that the system is shipping with yet.

some might say they unintentionally prioritised something. Their decision happened to them.

People have their consoles connected to their TVs and home theater/speaker systems. How many people have the same quality setup for their PC as well? How many have multiple quality setups?

Having those basic media capabilities in the console makes sense considering where it's situated.
