PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

E3: "Well, there was no killer app, but it's only $400 and XB1 has shitty DRM. May as well preorder now; I can always cancel later. Maybe there will be something cool at TGS."

TGS: "Gee, no new Japanese stuff for launch. But Resogun looks pretty cool, and I guess I could get Watch Dogs on PS4 instead of PC, and even though I'm not really into driving sims it would probably be fun to fuck around in Driveclub PS+ for a few hours. Should be a solid enough launch."

Watch Dogs and Driveclub are delayed: "Well, maybe Knack will be alright? Anyway I use my PS3 for streaming video and music a lot, and that stuff should be more convenient on PS4 because of standby mode. Plus it will probably have a cool new visualizer. I guess that's enough of an excuse not to sell my preorder on ebay."

Today: "..."

Hahaha. Almost my same thought process. :) I'm a bit more excited than that for the games though, so no selling here.

Even though it's generally stupid to do hivemind posts this part really takes this post to another level.

I once listened to the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas album while playing Oblivion one Christmas morning. That was the last time I played music in a game. I'm not going to use that feature. Heck, Microsoft almost didn't keep the feature for the 360(becuase no one used it) but I guess no one remembers that admission.

Also just to clarify: It seriously has no DLNA support? As in, I can use a piece of hardware from 2007 as a media hub but this "cutting edge" technology can't swing it at the ass end of 2013?

I just want to reiterate how fucking stupid that is.

I'm amazed at how many people care about this - very much in a "I never knew so many people used these features I never considered using" kind of way. Doesn't matter to me, but hope this gets resolved promptly either way. Seems like a ludicrous situation otherwise.

Thus far, I'm happy to give Sony the benefit of the doubt - not putting it right quickly would be a major misstep and would definitely effect the way I feel about them.

Also, if it was remotely necessary - this is the proof that this is anything but Sonygaf.

One thing I found out today was that so many people use their PS3 as their main music player. I just thought everyone would mainly use their PC.
That what I use mine for. I stream all my music through the PS3 and it plays through my HD receiver. If the PS3 did it, then so should the PS4. No excuse. None.

People have their consoles connected to their TVs and home theater/speaker systems. How many people have the same quality setup for their PC as well? How many have multiple quality setups?

Having those basic media capabilities in the console makes sense considering where it's situated.

PS3 is the only device I have at home right now that can play music CDs. I play all my CDs on my PS3.

That makes sense. Thank you for the replies.

You've never wanted to watch movies or share pictures with friends and family in the living room without switching devices?

Disappointing indeed. Hopefully it gets patched in just like many of the features found in the PS3 OS.

I have faith in the team to realize that these basic functions that were included in their last system should be included in the newer version.

CEO Kaz Hirai killing it on twitter

We are changing the name of our "Sony Music Unlimited" service just for PS4. It will be called "Sony the music you are limited to"

PS4 does not support CD or MP3 playback, but we are working on a peripheral to allow you to play your minidisc collection through your PS4!

It's threads like these that make me realise I know fuck all about the gaming community at large.

In 20 years of gaming the only game I've wanted to use my own soundtrack with was Football Manager. I thought I was pretty normal , but it appears I'm the outlier.

R.I.P PS4 , we hardly knew ye.

You've never wanted to watch movies or share pictures with friends and family in the living room without switching devices?

It doesn't play movies ?

If it's a games console first, why did they remove functionality that has just been 'accepted' and offer a PAID music service to replace it? If it's all about the games, why even offer a solution? Oh yeah, because Sony considers it a media device as much as anybody does. It plays games and is a media device. My "Phone" would be almost worthless to me if I couldn't read emails on it. I don't call it my "email device". It's still a phone. Videogame machines stopped being "game machines" this generation with the advent of Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, and almost every other ability and program I have across all my devices ALSO being on them.

I'm irritated. I'm not going to cancel and I'm not 'much' less excited about my pre-order. In fact I took a 4 day weekend to bask in its glory. But being able to play MP3's or custom soundtracks (especially during racing games) is something I expected.

I thought this was just a "thing" to be expected in these devices. Like if a new smartphone came out that didn't play music/MP3's ... "BUT IT'S A PHONE MACHINE!" is a fucking stupid excuse.

Exactly. One of the reasons the PS3 was my default console this gen (I own all three) is because it was also my media center. I streamed MP3s to it and used the visualizer. I streamed video files to it through PS3 Media Server. I watched Netflix, DVDs and Blu-rays on it. It was the go-to machine in the living room, and because it was such a pleasure to use (no ads, just content) it also became my go-to games console.

If Sony wants me to keep my PS3 hooked up, fine. It's a pain, but no big deal. However, when it dies, I'll have to replace it; and if the lack of media functionality on PS4 means I have to bite the bullet and buy an HTPC (or a Steambox), suddenly Sony are competing with another gaming/media device for living room mindshare.

This hivemind, GAF is one single being, air quotes crap should be bannable by now. I mean, you are quoting your imagination, its kinda embarassing.

OT, MP3 support sucks, but im not bothered by it. But no media servers, that really sucks. Hopefully, it can simply be added as an app. Should be easy, right?

I'm thinking it might be a good idea for a few XBox diehards in this thread to keep it in their pants until it's confirmed the XBOne supports it out of the box.

Unless it's already been confirmed?

Right. So if they can cut down even a little on how much of a loss they are taking on each unit sold by not having to pay the licensing fee for the decoder plus put their own service front and center, that's an option that is completely legitimate. Like I said, it's clear what the intent is. Time will tell if it pans out and they see the kind of increase in service subscribers that they are angling for. I won't be one of them, but then again playing MP3s from my PS3 is a feature I've only used once.

I'd probably be kicking up more of a fuss if the MP3 format were a royalty free format that Sony was locking out in order to force-funnel people to their service, but it's not so...

If they patch it in someone will have to pay for it. So either sony pays for it, losing money in the process. Or they charge you for it like they could have when they sell people the console.

I'm irritated but I'm also not losing sleep over it. And for the record, don't ask me why they removed a base function, find someone who can ask or go to Yoshida but at least we got something out of him.

Then you should still be mad because the system has shit for games. So if its a games-first console, it's failing at the one thing it was supposed to excel at. How is this not unacceptable?

You on the other hand, I'm not surprised to see making this kind of post. I suppose you want me to have a comeback fitting of your response? Start making concise and more concise remarks and you might just get a better reaction. If you think it's failing in games then that's a highly subjective and factually wrong excuse unless you want to downplay PS4's enormous games advantage at this time.

Actually, it's pretty much the same thing because in both cases its screwing about with the concept of ownership.

I don't know about that. The DRM uproar was over how we are able to use games, purchased for a particular game system, on that system e.g. used games (which includes renting and loaning games). This is about a feature-- a current standard feature, absolutely-- of media playback that is peripheral, not a part of the core functionality of that machine, as I understand the PS4 to be a games console. Sony isn't making any statement as to your ownership over mp3s, just that you can't play them on their new console at launch. Clearly to those of you that have been using your PS3s as your main media hub via DLNA or whatever are going to be the hardest hit with this decision, as well as those who played custom soundtracks with their games. Both totally legit uses that I personally never got into but that's not the point. I'm definitely in the camp that thinks the feature ought to have been left in; DLNA at least.

As I said, I'm surprised Sony went that route and it'll be interesting if the initial meltdowns here and elsewhere translate into anything concrete for them down the road in terms of negative financial impact. The system hasn't launched yet so I have no idea, tbh.

This is a great point. From a cost perspective, I'd rather pay the fees for the actual amounts of units sold/activated (tracked via FW updates if rolled in later) than just pay for every single unit manufactured, whether they get used or not.

Fucking legendary.

No MP3s? That's dumb - I use my PS3 for this quite a bit. A good reason (for me) to wait to buy a PS4 until this is patched in via a future FW update.

As for the video, not a deal-breaker for me.

One thing I found out today was that so many people use their PS3 as their main music player. I just thought everyone would mainly use their PC.

Yeah, with SteamBox coming I may end up hooking a PC to my receiver next year but currently we're a family of laptops, with only our PS3 and 360 (and cable box) hooked to the receiver / HD TV.

I can see that. I mean, I feel the same way about this username change function. But I still think they should be able to include it if it XBox has done it.

Lol Shuei has blocked me from following because I said I saw this as a money grab. Yeah definitely for the fans by the fans right shuei?

Have to laugh at Sony stumbling at the finish line. Weak launch line up, games delayed, much vaunted GDDR5 making little difference, day one patch needed (you don't have to be online!), no MP3 playing ability in a multimedia device. Seems like it's been months since I heard any good news about their system.

I have an HTPC plugged into my receiver via HDMI. It's quite commonplace.

Nonsense, they don't have HDMI ports, they can't be plugged into TVs, receivers, used with controllers or put in anything other than the most uncomfortable, cramped environment I can dream up to support my platform of choice.

Love that sweet 720p avatar, mang.

So you got blocked because you purposely went on Twitter to possibly harass Shuhei and acted like an ass?

Not surprised.

Nothing to downplay. There are a ton of people who are not impressed with this console's launch titles (which as far as retail releases go, can almost entirely be summed up as "FPS and sports games"), and I'm one of them. If you're not, then congrats?

This is a fair point, actually. Still, I have a feeling as this information gets traction on larger game websites Sony will hear more and more people complaining about it. Taking out features that not only your last console had, but still have heavy usage among the general populace, is unwise to say the least.
