Will every trophy be synced to the server in real-time in the background as you're unlocking each one like it already does for achievements on the 360?. That would be convenient to those who use sites like Raptr.

The first is the complete removal of DLNA. For those that don't know what that is, DLNA enabled the PS3 for example to wirelessly communicate and share data with other DLNA enabled devices. That meant sharing pictures from your DLNA enabled phone would be quick and seamless. Such won't be the case with the PS4, since it is no longer DLNA certified.

they choose the silliest example. people are mad because they won't be able to stream pirated media to their console. at least be honest about it. :)

Can we stop calling the people who want to listen to their own music or put their own videos up on their TV pirates?

Fucking hell, you're the third poster I've seen do this shit.

Who actually listens to mp3s while playing games? .01% of the population? If it keeps the PS4 price down i support this.

The kind of person that needs to listen to porn while playing Battlefield, even Sony execs know the feature is silly.

Yeah, I may have misunderstood the FAQ thread, and they mean only storage isn't supported. Has it been confirmed anywhere that you can play media from external HDDs like the ps3?

It hasn't been confirmed that you can. It hasn't been confirmed that you can't either.

The question in the FAQ is referring to game data.

Using my own soundtrack while racing in Gran Turismo and setting records at Monza was one of my personal highlights of the entire gen. I love listening to Butt Metal when going fast and I'm dead fucking serious that this is a feature that almost doubled my immersion in racing games because all of a sudden I was listening to the kind of music I'm listening in my own real car.

I get the feeling you are trying to be tongue and cheek with this comment, but in case it's not, it's not cool to marginalize people for wanting to use their PS4 in the same way that they currently use their PS3.

What the hell no music visualizer?????

So when Im a friends house having a party and we are all high on ecstasy and want to put on music and watch the trippy visualizer we can't?

The 360 music visualizer was great.

Hey, custom soundtracks made multiple Dead Space 2 playthroughs bearable.

Yeah. Not everyone who wants to put MP3s on their console is a pirate. Ridiculous accusation from that guy.

Lack of DLNA support is a huge blow for me. Streaming is huge for me, I link my iTunes folders to stream my mp4's. I want less devices in my office/living room not more.

As for playing mp3's.. Only for racing games do I find it necessary. I actually like music unlimited.

This is shitty news. I have an MU subscription, and was considering renewing. Now I think I'll skip it. Pushing me to things like this just pisses me off. I'll get spotify or something instead.

You used a custom soundtrack to make it easier to force yourself to play a game you don't like multiple times?

I enjoyed the game. I just needed something to make it feel a little fresher the second time around. I already knew the story, so listening to them blab didn't really do much for me.

This isn't enough to cancel my preorder, or on the same level as Microsoft's pre-180 policies, but it squanders a massive amount of good will Sony has earned. Announce a fix, Sony. Removing functionality from your previous generation's console is anti-consumer, plain and simple.

I suppose what baffles me most about removing DLNA is how Sony is pushing the the streaming and interconnectivity thing with second screen and vita/vita tv yet drops support of something so entwined to that idea that they started.

They'll probably do what everyone wanted Nintendo to do which is charge a $10-$15 activation fee which is essentially buying a license for your console. Sony didn't think the "listening to porn while playing Battlefield in the basement" crowd was going to be so vocal. Awesome response by Yoshida.

this whole post makes me really disappointed. It makes me feel like the ps4 had the same online DRM requirements xbox one did but didnt say anything until after the xbox one conference.

It's kinda funny. All the way from the Feb event through E3 to now I was hoping they would extend the media playing capabilities of PS4 for example with mkv playback (since everything from TVs to BluRay players can do that now). Not only did they not do that, they even removed DLNA streaming altogether.

He was talking about average consumers, not "hardcores."
If average consumers don't care about the feature, then why bother using it to force people to sign up for MU? Sony is doing this precisely because they know it's popular, otherwise it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Maybe they did this to add it on vita tv. Either way, it feels like instead of buying a console I am renting a machine where I need to be always online to stream music and video from their services. They were on a roll since February, nothing but positivity but two weeks before launch we get hit with this.

If only there was some sort of way a platform holder could push out software changes to improve the hardware functionality every so often. Like some kind of update to address features and other issues.

Guess the PS4 is straight up fucked. Damn shame.

Do you honestly think playing MP3's on a video game console is a 'hardcore' feature? It's going to come up in reviews for this console in mainstream coverage. It's almost expected these days.

What is mainstream coverage? kotaku? GAF? When this thing sells like hotcakes on launch no one will be talking about the .1% of Jimmy's from GTA V.

Judging by this thread, far more than '0.1%'. But by all means make silly assumptions to back up your excuses for Sony if it makes you feel better.

If you think the voices in this thread, or this forum in its entirety represents even a hummingbirds fart against the total PlayStation user base then.....I just don't know what to say.

I think it's premature to say that the number of early adopters that care about DLNA and mp3 are insignificant

I'll never be interested in a subscription-only music service. I've assembled my own reliable, legitimate collection of music over the years while waiting for studios to get their act together on the digital front. The services that therefore interest me will be the ones that offer BOTH a subscription component AND can fully accommodate my local, existing, legitimate music library. Companies like Apple, Google and Amazon understand this and have worked smartly to break down arbitrary barriers. Hopefully Sony is smart enough to realize this is the direction they need to head in with Music Unlimited.

I have only very limited interest in utilizing custom soundtracks for myself but it's such low-hanging fruit at this point to allow basic mp3 playback and employ that for custom soundtracks that it's ridiculous not to have this addressed within the next couple of updates, even if just for the sake of simply not squandering goodwill over it.

Has anyone brought this up? Even though the PS4 won't support MP3s at launch, it'll likely support AAC/M4A audio files because videos from the PS Store, Videos Unlimited, & other VOD services uses AAC.

so i missed the first 50 pages and im not that techy - does that mean programmes like PS3 media server wont work on the PS4? i use that to play my music through my hifi - also use it to look at my photos etc. Will this not work?

Well I never listened any MP3 on my PS3, but I know that my PS3 has the option and I can use it whenever I want... but with the PS4.... it's a shame, because I think that there's a lot of people who really uses this feature... I feel that the PS4 will be incomplete without that feature. Maybe in the future they will add that option with a patch..

May or not be true, you're right. And if and when Sony determines it's in their best financial interest to provide the functionality they will.

For the record I've never used custom soundtracks in games, but I understand how this is a step backward after the PS3. So yeah, I'm all in for a #PS4MP3 campaign.

I'm surprised the lack of .mp3s is a big deal for some people, though I guess it's kinda similar to the outcry over Xbox One essentially going digital only (which I participated in).

For me, personally, I now rely entirely on cloud services for music playback. It used to be Last.fm radio, but now I've uploaded all my old CDs to Google Music, and I also sub to Google Music All Access. If I fear I won't have access to an internet connection or I don't want to use up my data, the Google Music app lets me "pin" any music I want (including All Access content) to whatever device I'm using, storing it locally.

I'd imagine Sony was expecting most people to use apps like this and their own Music Unlimited as opposed to .mp3s, so they didn't bother including .mp3 support given they expected no one would care.

DLNA support, on the other hand, I can easily understand. Though the lack of .mkv support made that feature pretty much useless for me too.

Edit: If they ink a deal with Google for Google TV/Play features (music, movie, book, etc. access) I will be SO stoked. But it seems Google doesn't let people do that too often, looking at the current slate of media boxes and consoles.

Amen. Seriously, these corporate white knights are annoying as hell. I feel like we are presumed guilty just for wanting the convenience of portability between platforms for things we already own.

I asked the same question earlier and apparently that is the case. It will no longer work. :(

I really need to listen to initial D soundtrack while playing racing games.

That spoken, I'm sure this can be easily fixed in firmware update, and I'm not worried a bit.

Their white knighting still doesn't cover Sony for not supporting in-game custom soundtracks.

Yes I furious. I'm sure I'll love the hell out of the PS4 but I really want the Steambox to succeed. An open OS platform is what console gaming needs so we won't have to deal with bullshit like this.

I believe you and I stand with you

Well this does indeed suck but I guess Ill ise my 360 for that in the time being.. I dont like playing games with music though

Don't fret, i'm pretty sure they'll add support with a future FW upgrade. And count me on the camp of people who don't really mind about those features being absent at launch. That being said... i'd still support a #PS4MP3 movement out of sympathy for those who feel affected.

I thought about that. Earlier in this thread, I was wondering if the question was specific to the MP3 file format, and if other file formats such as AAC would be playable.

Ripping DVDs and Blu-rays.. How does it work? :P

chill out. it was in fact a tongue in cheek comment. i just found the photo streaming example from polygon extremely silly. i am actually on your side. :P

I think it's specific to the MP3 file format. I can't believe no one in the media has asked Sony this yet.
