why would anybody subscribe to the service if you can just listen to your own music while gaming ?
its a paywall and its not going anywhere.
they will patch in mp3 support but background music is only available for music unlimited subscribers

weighing up how much I'll miss the PS+ content my existing account has. Honestly it's looking like not a lot, because I've played or am playing what I wanted and don;t have time to go back and play other stuff.

Shu already mentioned somewhere before that PSN ID change is very much requested, but that it's technically challenging, given the infrastructure of how PSN IDs are designed.
Tldr; they know about it, they want to make it happen, but it's harder than it looks.
This MP3 exclusion at launch is just them wanting to push Music Unlimited.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
You got this wrong people are upset because the reason this stuff isn't in seems to be because Sony would rather force us into their Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited ecosystems.

As in allowing third parties like say PLEX, In
lay, Last.fm or Spotify to sell their apps on PSN...
I don't know if PS4 has the multitasking support for that to allow in game music streaming or playing from a third party app but I think it would be a very nice fix for at least part of this problem.

Lol that's not what they're doing, if that was the case Music unlimited wouldn't be available at launch.
Sony is putting playing music on your console behind a pay wall that all there is to it.It's simply a question of whether it's a temporary pay wall or a permanent one.
Because their "music unlimited" is paid service, they put development cost to make PS4 has full support at launch ,while NO basic MP3 playback for you.

It seems to me that the feature is ready to go and other things will come later. When a platform hasn't even launched it's hard to judge it like one that's been out for 3 years and still hasn't fixed a problem.

I don't disagree, but it's not like including MP3 and DLNA compatability are complex items. They would be simple to implement, and it's pretty obvious they were excluded to push cloud services on the consumer.

This is why I'm not really worried about this. Sony has a proven track record of listening and responding to their gamer base concerns.

I didn't have a PSN ID until 2 months ago so it isn't a big deal to me. Sucks though and I could see that pissing people off.
It's common sense. The PS4 MUST support AAC/M4A audio files because videos from the PS Store, Videos Unlimited, & other VOD App/services uses AAC audio.

Well the people who like those features will buy PS3s...I've heard something like that somewhere before.
I'm stuck with an id I made almost 8 years ago too man, but whatever. I've never really seen a person complain about not being able to change their Steam ID. I find the complaints about it pretty bizarre.
That doesn't mean those will be supported in the background music player though. Plus I'm not converting my 10k mp3s to aac because Sony is being an asshole.

I didn't care about the background image thing but lack of background music and MP3/AAC playing? What a fucking lame ploy. They will surely have to address this.
The Vita got it so right. Just start the app and let it run. PS4 needs that.

Well this is unfortunate. I have a Christmas playlist on my PS3 made up of songs from various CDs I have that I use during the holidays and it has been wonderful. Am I to assume that I cannot do this on my PS4 then? And I can't plug my external HDD with hundreds of movies on it to my PS4 either?? I would have thought this would be extremely basic functionality at this point. Very disappointing. Good thing I still have my PS3. And good thing I can still buy a PS2 to play all of those games. At this rate I will ALWAYS have ALL of Sony's systems in my household ALL the time just to do everything I want. All-in-one is starting to make more sense now (not that I ever would). :-\
And this - to reiterate the point I made earlier - may well be one of the non-commercial reasons they haven't included it at launch.
If Sony have market research or usage data that says to them that out of 80M PS3 owners, only a certain % of them use the PS3's MP3 player, or use the console for DLNA streaming of some kind, why would they add to the complexity of the PS4 for launch?
(And of course waaay back in the thread, Kagari getting a PM from another gaffer about DLNA being patched in later and that its just not around for launch).
Yeah, it just wasn't a day one priority for them it seems.
Glad to see them be receptive and not quite, gotta keep that positive momentum going.
