How can a product sell when no one knows it's on sale? It's really all on Google. The other thing is there are a vast majority of users who would prefer to just upgrade to what may be a superior phone (S4, HTC One) for $200 and remain on contract.

Not really.

The Nexus phone is not intended to be a widespread mainstream device, and it's sold primarily unlocked and off-contract. The price, although a total steal for an unlocked smart phone, is still higher than the sticker price for subsidized phones sold through carriers.

It's very much a niche product, in spite of the uber-hyped launches among tech enthusiasts.

I'm starting to think that the phone manufacture would prefer limited sales due to the small margin of profit it returns. Sort of like a good gesture to google for some sort of return.
