Cinemablend calls out gaming press, accuses them of living in a Doritocracy

something that meets your needs and offers a nice technological power advantage over the competition

So everyone should always want whichever device is the most powerful? The unstated assumption is that everything else beyond horsepower is equal, and I don't think that's the case.

It's about functionality, not power.

Absolutely. Most of us here are informed gamers, but anyone that isn't, relies on the press to provide hem information to help them make a purchasing decision. That the press is overwhelmingly downplaying these differences means people are not being given proper information, and that is disappointing at best, and a damning indictment of the state of gaming media at worst.

I guess they can't be blamed for wanting to save the industry. If xbox one does bad its ultimately bad for us. Competition breeds consumerism. Do you want Playstation to start acting like Microsoft? But it does of course completely strip them of what little integrity they had. It is also disappointing in light of what has happened with the Wii U. The media hasn't done a lick to help Nintendo.
But no matter what the press says, I think most average consumers are gonna still offhand hear about this DRM stuff and they will no question notice the price difference and still go the right way.

Like I said earlier, 1 UP Yours was a podcast that functioned as a Microsoft cheerleading session. The only way there was ever positive Sony discussion was when Shane was on the podcast and he was jumped on by the other three every time he was on there. People like Luke and David Ellis were so blatant that it was sickening.

You're ridiculous. You can't fault Luke and David Ellis for being Microsoft homers, and then turnaround and champion Shane who was basically the antithesis of the two from a cheerleading standpoint. Well I suppose you can, but it's pretty much the very definition of hypocritical.

I'm glad to know Neogaf (and to a smaller extent Reddit) are big enough to call out these journalists' bullshit and make them look like the schmucks they are.

Sure. The problem is that neither the MS cheerleaders in the press nor MS themselves are making this case. They are all intent on playing down the power differences and the price differences.

So wake me up when MS start touting the extra stuff one receives for the money, but until then it is a perfectly valid criticism of the press that they seem to be doing everything in their power to play down the power gap and play down the failures of the Bone in terms of graphics, framerate, pricing and general desirability.

This is just insane. That isnt how the market would work. Sony wouldn't be getting a bigger market share through anything like a monopoly, they would be increasing market share because consumers preferred the product. Beyond that the extra consumers wouldn't all flock to sony, they would go PC, Nintendo, and handheld. Having a company exist through market manipulation(or purely through marketing) isnt a good thing, you call that malinvestment.

Apple isnt succesful because of retina displays
What a terrible analogy
Not to mention the nexus 7 has a better screen

Offering high resolution screens first and making a big deal about them has been a key point of Apple's strategy, and now Android device makers do the same thing.

The whole situation reminds me of the 2012 presidential election, when CNN kept talking about how it was a close race when Obama was obviously ahead. A complete refusal to choose sides even when in reality one side is a clear winner.

I don't know if it's being afraid of repercussions or what, but it's a frustrating trend to see. It's simply disingenuous and misleading. I hope it's something that doesn't persist as we move into the next generation.

This Holloway chap doesn't seem to have a long memory for a supposed video games historian. There have been more battles fought between console makers over power, resolution, bits, colors, FPS, etc. than anything else. Gaming is about technology as much as it is about having fun.

All of these joke media articles excusing the lack of power from the more expensive Xbone won't even matter. It's going to get buried.

Apple isn't successful because of retina displays, but that doesn't mean that retina displays weren't a success.

The success of retina displays still means something about the importance of resolution.

Your right to a point but I would have say that shane was for the most part more of a even keeled voice than either Luke or David Ellis but they all had there biases including Garnett.

It's not that the differences in graphics don't matter, it's that the differences in feature set matter more. You can make games and software for the Xbone that can't be done on the PS4 ever, and no pixel fill rate or shader count will make up that difference.

So upscaling is the new unskewing?

What functionality is the PS4 lacking then? I agree horsepower isn't everything, but I fail to see where the PS4 is lacking on function and features, and doing those things at a more competitive price.

No, it's not. Especially when Shane wasn't a fixture on that show at that point. He was brought on as a guest. So for them to achieve any sort of balanced discussion they had to bring on a fanboy from outside of the show to achieve any sort of honest discussion. Think about that for a second.

Gaming press is so inherently stupid and biased that I go to GAF when it comes to opinions and gaming news. NA gaming press was overwhelmingly pro 360 and a lot of the things they bashed the PS3 for are now suddenly being brushed under the rug because Microsoft has switched places.

Yep. "Blast Processing", "Do the Math", etc. and that is just scratching the surface.

I've been on a mini-tirade over the gaming press for the past few days, so I won't rehash what I've said before.

As for the article in the OP, that's a really well written and reasoned piece, and it's about god damn time. Thanks for posting it.

tell me one game or set of game features that ps4 can't do, that can be done on xbox one. What, IR, who wants to play a kinect game in total darkness?

And how much cheaper is a decent GPU/CPU for a PC? If you're using cost per pixel as some kind of metric then every console owner ever is a gods damned moron, myself included.

We're not buying this stuff for performance alone; we're buying it for convenience, interface, secondary applications, exclusive titles...

WTF are you smoking?!

Even if we assume everyone is technical/knowledgeable enough and willing to consider that option it's still impossible to build a gaming PC today that will perform as well as the PS4 or XBone especially as devs get better with the HW.

according to logical increments we'd need to spend at least $530 to fall in the same league as even the XB1 today - and that's without considering the additional costs of mouse/keyboard/camera and form factor/noise

Tell us more about this software that can't be done on PS4 but can on X1.

Or is that entirely based on your own speculation about what their respective cameras are capable of having never seen either one do anything of note?

You wanna know what would sway my voting dollars more than PR and FUD?

Buy some studios and fucking keep them! Forza and Halo are not enough for me to spend an extra $100 over a more powerful console.

Sounds awesome. Link?

Well what made Shane bearable to me was that he at least respected and responded to arguments that went against his fanboy opinion, and often started his fanboy ramblings by acknowledging that people disagree with him and that it's fine to disagree.

These microsoft fanboy ramblings are often preceded or followed by calling out "the internet" or NeoGAF for being unreasonable fanboys.

This is some revisionist history. We're talking about 1upYours right? Wasn't Shane a regular part of the podcast since early to mid 2006, and Luke didn't join until that same time frame? The show didn't even exist until late 2005, and basically didn't take form until Garnett took the driver's seat in early 2006.

Lol
Good one...
You are being sarcastic...right?...

Thats a pretty nice camera.
The one built into my laptop is a lot smaller though
Thats strange

Shane left after the major lay offs and he returned as a guest every now and then. It was essentially the Ellis/Lee circle jerk without him on there. The podcast was awful because they flat out denied the red ring of death was a major issue and when Microsoft admitted it was an issue it was downplayed. The NA gaming press has been insanely pro Microsoft for a while now. Sony does everything right, Microsoft drops the ball, and all of sudden resolution is irrelevant, frame rate is irrelevant, price is irrelevant, and it's all about the games that don't run as well.

the guy has a point the kinect is more powerful than the ps camera and can do more. basic point tof camera which gives a depth reading.

but anyway if ms was championing that and its os as opposed to downplaying the power and price difference they would get a lot more cred from the hardcore. .. focus on what differentiates you rather than fud.

1) What's a "tof camera"?

2) PS4 camera has two sensors... pretty sure it can tell depth from those, too. Kinda like how your eyes work, ya know?
