Battlefield 4 PC performance thread

Just got done messing around the Test Range after installing Windows 8.1. Same settings, same map I'm getting around a 10 fps boost. From 60 - 85 with a mix of ultra and high with 2x MSAA and HBAO to 70 - 90+.

Later I'll see how it plays out in a full server. The maps that performed the worst in Windows 7, Shanghai and Dawnbreak would dip into the 40s in specific areas (most specifically areas with fire). So far so good though.

Anyone else gets stuttering?

the joke is i get constant 60 fps but the game feels very clunky and heavy ..its like i play with 15 fps.

Do you have vsync enabled? Someone earlier was complaining about stuttering when vsync is enabled but not when it was disabled.

Can someone help me I don't know if this is a BF4 specific problem but It's happened to me on other games too.

Basically the framerate dives into the teens every minute or so for no reason regardless of the visual settings. It's like 30-60 for a second then it PLUNGES to like 10-19fps and then after a few seconds shoots back up. I thought it was my CPU throttling so I set my clocks back to default on my CPU. The CPU is a AMD FX4100 which I know is a slouch but it's worked fine on other games. It's literally making MP unplayable. It does this in SP too and it's done this in other games. My GPU is a 2GB 7870. I could deal with fps going to 40's or so in game on big maps but teens?? Nah.

Also I'm using Radeon Pro with Vysnc(dynamic)/TB on.

Intel Core i7-4770K
GeForce GTX 780
16 GB RAM
SSD

In multiplayer, I get a near constant 60 fps at 1920 x 1200 with Ultra settings.

EDIT: Oh yes, and this is with vertical sync on.

So how much of a bottleneck is 4gb of ram in this game?

I've got a GTX 770 and i5 2500k clocked at 4.7ghz but only 4GB of ram.

Can run at ultra on everything fine but it random stutters at points. I'm presuming thats being caused by the ram?

My damn 8gb stick hasn't arrived yet.

Fuck this game, I keep getting DirectX crashes that take my display driver with it. I guess a lot of people are getting getdeviceremovedreason Error, and it's been happening since BF3. Ugh.

Can someone tell me or post screenshots of differences between "Mesh" and "Lighting Quality" from Ultra to Medium please? Especially the latter, it seems to take a huge impact on FPS.

Most of the time I run MP at 60 FPS @1080p with everything on Ultra and 2xAA but on some maps like Paracel, Shanghai, Zavod I take dips as low as ~40-45 when I'm looking at a huge battle from a distance, it's driving me insane and those 2 settings seem to be the biggest offenders.

I'm running:
7970 Stock
8GB RAM
2500k @4.2GHz
Windows 8

Guess my 2500K@4.5 isn't quite enough anymore, drops to 47 fps in some open areas. :/ Haven't done any definite testing though, running mixed ultra/high/low settings on a 7970@1.1 with 4xMSAA. Hope Mantle will also help it out a bit.

Doesn't bug me enough for a marginal upgrade yet though since the action is usually slower paced in those areas.

No stuttering or anything, running it with 8GB ram from an SSD, Windows 8.1.

Heard that Mesh Quality affected from how far away vehicles are visible in BF3, been keeping that at Ultra. Far from certain of it though.

Turn Effects down to High, that's the one that seems to hit FPS hard.

So I last rebuilt my PC like 3ish years ago, it was a really high end system at the time, I have a 1st generation core i5 processor, ATI Radeon 5870 (1GB), and 4gb DDR3 Ram.

What would benefit me the most? Upping the ram to like 12 gigs and a nice 2-3gb video card like the GTX 770?

Or is the processor going to be a huge bottleneck too?

I finally got my triple monitor setup going. I got everything on ultra except I lowered lighting down to medium and MSAA to 2x. Framerate averages 55-62fps but goes up to 70 sometimes and hardly goes lower than 50 when shit hits the fan. I'm gonna try lowering Effects to high to see if the performance increases signifcantly.

Before going triple monitor I was getting 80-110fps with everything set to max.

Dropping Effects to High gave me 8fps boost. I'm getting 62-70fps now. I think I'm done messing with video and can now concentrate on the game.

I was getting crippling stuttering until I switched to 8 GB.

560ti w/ 2500k.

I still get stuttering at random but not constantly.

That core i5 should be good enough to get 60 FPS, you can also overclock it if it's not holding up in multiplayer.

Has anyone else tried messing with the Resolution Scale settings?

It is amazing what a simple drop to 90-95% will do for the smoothness of your framerate / weapon movement.

Also, can anyone turn theirs to 200% Resolution Scale and tell me what their framerate goes to?

I would love to know what sort of rig it takes to play 1080p, Ultra settings, 4xMSAA with the 200% resolution scale ( looks fantastic )

It doesn't matter if vsync is on or off, same issue.

I've been playing since release without a single crash and excellent all around performance on Ultra settings at 1080p in multiplayer. I've yet to try singleplayer.

My rig:

Windows 8.1
I7 4770k @ 4.2
7970 @ 1050 & 1450 Driver: 13.152-130830a-163178C-ATI
16gb ram @ 1866
240 gb Neutron GTX ssd

The only issues i'm running into is sound occasionally cutting out and slightly hotter GPU temps than i'm comfortable with. I'm having to keep the fan at 50% to keep it at 71C.

2500k
8gb ram
560 Ti 1GB VRAM
1680 x 1050

Runs really well at all High settings. Some drop into the 40's but averages around 55fps. Pretty happy considering the Beta just didn't run on my system.

2560x1440 (1440p) 27" Monitor

Everything on Ultra, FOV 90, x4 MSAA. I get 60-100+ frames in a 64 player server of Conquest Large.

My rig:

Windows 8.1
i7 4770k @ 4.2GHz
GTX Titan SC
16GB DDR3 @ 2133MHz
256GB 840 Pro Samsung

AMD Phenom X4 Quad Core 3.4 GHZ
8GB Ram
670 2GB Ram OC

Mixture of medium, high and ultra settings at 1080p. I'm getting about 30+, average in the 30s and 40s.
I could get it to run better but I need to have it looking good.

BF3 and BF4 are both jittery messes until I activate vsync, I find. No idea why.

Ignore the game's software v-sync and activate adaptive v-sync from your video card's settings, if you're running an Nvidia card. Not sure what it's called for AMD cards. They should help immensely.

Tried it, still micro stuttering.

Asus GTX 670
i5 3570k
12GB RAM

Game runs pretty damn well for me, on Ultra it stays up near 60 until really hectic shit happens. But for online I play on all low so I can get the 144fps for my monitor. SO damn buttery smooth

Are you running SLI? Did you play the beta? This was rampant in there, and I never could completely eliminate it on my GTX 590. What helped was the adaptive v-sync and upgrading to Windows 8. Again, it didn't completely eliminate the stuttering, but it improved it until it was at least playable.

Of course that doesn't help with the current server issues...

What are you guys using to check FPS?
Is Fraps still the best app for that?

Sure you can use Fraps, Afterburner doesn't work with 64-bit executables, also you can type "perfoverlay.drawfps 1" without the quotes in the games console to display FPS.

AMD PhII X4 965 BE @3,4Ghz
16Gb RAM
GTX 770 4gb

Mostly 50-60 with Ultra settings with Shadowplay enabled, some drops to ~30 during some heavy effects scenes.

i5 3570k
8GB Ram
GTX 560ti

1080p monitor
can run it at 60fps with framedrops on high settings

im suprised it runs this well!, though i am getting a pretty big issue in multiplayer where the game crash's whenever i try to go to my video settings :/

No to SLI and beta and yes it is playable but the movement all feels so clunky and heavy.
Oh and the rubber banding is goddamn awful, i played BF3 on release for a few weeks, stopped and never returned, i remember it was pretty much the same as BF4 now.

Did they fixed it in BF3? or is it still the same?

Edit: WTF is this shit, just saw a forum post from october and people still complain about rubber banding in BF3.

I already said it in the OT but BF3/4 have probably the worst netcode i've ever seen in a first person shooter. It's fucking garbage, BF4 is even worse. Unbelievable.
I mean don't get me wrong, the game can be really fun but those major problems totally ruin it and i'm shocked they still didn't fix that in BF3.

Fix. your. shit. DICE.

Thanks!

I seem to be getting lowish FPS compared to some of the other members here. 38-50fps everything ultra with 120 field of view.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal for a system with the ff specs:

i7 - 4900MQ
GTX 780M SLI
32GB RAM
SAMSUNG SDD SM841

Yep, you're getting that clunky and heavy movement regardless of FPS? That was present in the beta but it was pretty ironed out by the time it ended. It's here now, but it should get better as it did in the beta. We can only hope...

The rubber banding I am getting as well and yes I recall it was present on BF3, but I have to say I don't remember it being this bad. All was eventually ironed out in BF3 and it runs prettying flawless today. Except client side hit detection which will always suck, but that's not a defect per se.

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Set to "High Performance" fixed all my FPS and crashing issues. For the most part.

Why is your FOV so high.

All that does is for the gpu to run maxed out under any load. Not sure if its a coinidince and you just havent got any crashes yet.

Dropping Effects to High gave me 8fps boost. I'm getting 62-70fps now. I think I'm done messing with video and can now concentrate on the game.

I'm also on a triple monitor setup, on a single gtx titan. Ultra my fps was in low 40s, but using the high preset helped me get into the mid upper 50s. There's some things like teammates not being labeled on the side screens so you tend to think they are enemies. Other than that it's a good experience.

Wait, single Titan? You got rid of your second one?

Smokey noooo did someone steal that other Titan?

I am on GTX 680 ..... man I am really thinking of going 780 TI but I don't know if the increase is worth it.

I7 960
6GB Ram

Everything getting long in the tooth : (

Why is your FOV so high.

It looks so much more awesome.

Anyway I found my problem. It appears that my SLI has been disabled. Fail.
Been playing for months without SLI. At least I fixed that now.

FPS is now usually 60, just dips to 40s during huge explosions.

Well since no one was able to help me I fixed my issue. It was due to my CPU throttling due to heat. I turned off most of the power saving/throttle options in the bios for my AMD CPU and its good. I turned off turbo core, cool n quiet, c6 core state, APM and put CPU q fan mode to turbo. I got it working nice now and MP runs in the most intense maps such as hainan resort or Zalvod at 30-60fps on ultra/high settings. I'm buying a CPU cooler tmrrw and will overclock a little to see if I can get a bump in performance.

After experimenting a bit, I can confirm that for whatever reason, the in-game v-sync setting completely fixes all of my stuttering/jitter issues that I started to notice. My graphics card's adaptive sync setting, changing pre-rendered frame buffer - these do jack shit.

Happily enough, I get zero perceptible input lag using the game's sync setting, which is a nice change.

decided to try single screen for a bit, whilst i prefer triple screen as a single monitor feels like playing with blinkers on after playing on triple, the game looks incredible at effective 4k, running the settings below on oc'd 780sli and averaging 60fps :O effects at high really does stop the explosion fps drops

Tried 150% scaling on my 780gtx already at 1600p. Lol. That didn't go well.

I'll turn the defects down to high but honestly with everything at ultra, 2x masa and no fxaa (looks ugly) I'm rarely below 60fos in MP.

Nice!

I've noticed as mentioned unless vsync is enabled or you push your card hard high consistent framerates is not attainable on nvidia cards as of yet or ever if drivers don't fix them & or their is no further amd performance patches.
Monitoring gpu usage will sporadically plumet from 100fps down to 45 back to 90 etc all over the place, upon inspection in MSIafterburner it's going to as low as 51%>70%>91>51% gpu usage all within seconds on a 770gtx at1080p.

Sooooo hopefully it gets fixed but with AMD paying what they did I don't think it will or it's of little priority & given how 'sloppy' dice after support/patches have been with battlefield it's up in the air.

Soooo ultra everything, hbao on, msaa disabled. 80fov 130% scaling results in steady 100%gpu usage and a consistent 45-60fps in the most intense situations. Which imo looks gorgeous on a mere 24"monitor and is smoother than 100fps>40fps>60 all over the place!
Why it wont utilize 100gpu on modest settings and maintain a solid framerate which it's perfectly capable of doing if the gpu usage was adequate seems suspect.

No bottleneck as it's only chewing 2.2gb vram on the maxxed settings listed above with 130% scaling.
Cpu 3770k @ 4.7ghz HT enabled
8GB ram
Win 7
770gtx 3gb @ 1200mhz and vram at 7980mhz.

Mantle and or amd cards might be using the gpu as required, however as is on nvidia it's simply bullshit and a way to make mantle shine by artificial restricting current gpu usage behavior for those wanting decent eye candy at a consistent high fps 80-120 it's not going to work in it's current form.
Hopefully drivers fix this buuuuut mantle/amd $8million has me thinking otherwise.
Lol, hopefully I'm wrong and it's fixed with an update or drivers....

Enhancing the MSAA with supersampling helps a bit with foliage aliasing

You can use sparse grid for slightly better effect, but it has a bigger performance hit

Would you say what you have done is a better solution than medium post AA? Currently I'm running 2xMSAA and medium post AA
