Let's talk abour Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen. I think smokey dave had some impressions.
I actually liked this title a lot. It's very PS2-y, but the gameplay is solid with lots of room to experiment. Each level is completely open, allowing you to chose your own path through the level, and your character is very mobile, able to grapple onto roofs and run along walls. You can serve any of three factions warring over the land, performing missions that can actually have an effect on later ones. For example, performing enough missions where you steal enemy provisions will result in the soldiers of that faction being more susceptible to your food items. If a faction is against the wall, they may hire rival ninja clans or samurai to add another dangerous element to missions.
You can buy various tools like exploding mines and wind-up toys, but the real fun starts when you start crafting your own equipment. Let's say you want to make a smoke bomb that makes an enemy attack his friends. But maybe that's too boring, so you make it also boost the target's speed and attack strength to allow him to kill enemies easier. From potions that make your shuriken the size of dinner plates to explosive sushi that confuses any enemy it doesn't kill, there are a large amount of possibilities when it comes to making ninja tools for yourself.
Then there's the (paid) DLC, which introduces a variety of game-breaking/weird items like the mine that catapults enemies into the sky or a ninpo that makes purple fire explode out of nearby enemies. You have to go through a series of annoying fights to get said items, but I found that they were worth it for the most part.
That all being said, I did have some complaints as the game is far from perfect:
-The game can get quite repetitive at times, as most of the missions you are offered are often similar to ones you took earlier - even taking place in the same areas.
-The combat is very clunky, to the point where I just used the counter move you get later on and avoided all the other combat related functions entirely.
-The rating system favors killing people without being seen as fast as possible, which is annoying if you want to "ghost" levels.
-The story is horrible.
Finally, it can take a lot of grinding to get the materials you need to create godly items.
Overall, I'd give it a solid 7.5/10. Definitely got my money's worth and I still play it just to fool around with my game-breaking items and the ragdoll cheat.
