I really don't understand. THE GAME IS THE SAME, BUT ONE RUNS AT A HIGHER NATIVE RESOLUTION. I am very much a gameplay first, then story, THEN graphics. But the CHEAPER system is also MORE POWERFUL and can run MULTIPLATFORM games BETTER but yet it doesn't matter?

Oh but that doesn't matter. What will matter according to Sessler is stuff like AI and other obscure technical stuff that... if one system were to be more powerful than the other... it would still be the same if not... better... oh wait... power can matter for that stuff too... and the game would still run better... huh.

BTW, why the hell are people trying to convince other people that console power per dollar shouldn't matter to them? That is crazy.

My summary of this video:

-So the XB1 can't achieve 1080p/60fps. This is all the publishers fault because they promised too much, and the XB1 can't achieve that. It's not fair they set their goals so high.

-Sony promised 1080p on the PS3, and it was a big disappointment they couldn't hit it very often. Now 7 years later people are upset the XB1 can't hit 1080p, and that's not fair. Can't we all just like games?

-Let's all just wait and see what exclusives are coming next year, because right now it's not fair people are so excited about the PS4, even though it has no games.

haha that's probably about right.

he's been doing this type of shit for a while now. it's like everytime he comes out with a video he does some form of damage control.

I'm not buying a PS4 at launch. I don't even have a TV capable of displaying at 1080p. The difference between 720p and 1080p is completely irrelevant to my enjoyment of games right now. The only thing that's insane here is professional journalists completely glossing over a well defined difference in power (and consequently value) in these two upcoming consoles.

Can it really be called insane if this sort of thing has been happening for a long time now?

I have to give it to a cohort of neo-Nintendo fans (from the Wii onward) who created this false dichotomy, incessantly opposing technology and gameplay, as if it is forbidden to actually wish for both...

The reason many Nintendo fans said that is because generally developers only use extra technology to throw more "graphics" on the screen, NOT enhance the gameplay. VERY FEW console developers have grasped the balance between the two, gameplay and graphics.

And still, in the realm of consoles, Xbone is still powerful, just not AS powerful, I think no one is disputing that, just trying to ensure people know, yes it's lower resolution but it's the same game, if you like Xbox services/games, the resolution won't matter. It's beginning to feel like people are angry Sony is not getting more credit for what they managed to achieve with the PS4.

Dear Gaming Media,

We get it, it is about the games. Games on both systems will look great. Our point is if one of the two is running every game better and at a higher resolution then tell us that is the case, and stop telling us the difference is minimal. Just report the facts and get out of the way. Stop interjecting opinions in every piece, or attempt to marginalize everything and call everyone fanboys for caring. If Call of Duty is 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4, report just that, we don't need an opinion from you to know what that means. The backlash would be far less if members of the gaming media would just stop acting like we are all crazed fanboys fighting a console war, and just report the facts.

If AC4 has a higher resolution and runs better on the PS4 than the Xbox One, then just tell us that is the case and leave it be.

Agreed. They should report facts and leave politics and excuses out of this. Voice your stupid opinions in separate articles, journos.

Oof, lots of hate in here. I feel like he was on to something when he talked about marketing's focus on resolution numbers. Average Joe isn't gonna give a shit about 1080, or 900, or 720 or whatever the hell it might be. I think the point he was trying to make is if it looks good, it looks good. I don't know.

Sure, and I think it's worth considering that not everyone is infatuated with tech the way the enthusiast community is. However, I do think it's silly to act as though tech isn't important. And if it seems like the tech discrepancies are being blown out of proportion, it's important to consider that there's not much else to talk about.

I mean, sure, gamers could focus on playing games that are out now. But for those hyped about new console tech that's about to release, this is what we have to talk about.

Sorry we're all not insane people sitting their counting pixels.

Grow up.

I used to think this way. Then GAF called me out on it and forced me to turn on my brain and realize the resolution issue isn't about pixel count, it's about a much larger performance gap between the two upcoming consoles than Microsoft wants you to know about.

maybe it's because I really only paid attention to game journalism when I was younger and a PC gamer (ie, the 90s), but there was a lot less of ... this?

"This" being some weird talking head, what ifs, navel gazing hypothesizing.

I guess people just want to wantonly throw away $400-500 without making sure they are getting the absolute best product for their money. Those childish people!

Seriously. People are about to drop half a grand on some new shit and people pretending to be "journalists" just go eh, pretty much the same! Can you imagine a car or movie review site that did this?

Maybe it's just me but this console launch has been one of lowest info launches in memory. Sony was always going on about the emotion engine, the cell, tech talk and specs out the ass. MS couldn't contain themselves about how much more power the xbox and 360 had.

Now it seems like the hardware and software is a mystery, and no one is really asking wtf is going on. People have resorted to twitter to ask the company PR people directly because there are so many unanswered questions weeks from launch.

Here's what the gaming media needs to admit and communicate to their readers.
-PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox One
-PS4 is $399, Xbox One is $499
-Launch Titles. Both multiplats and exclusives.

Let people reach the obvious conclusion from there. Don't try to downplay or promote certain aspects of the consoles. That's all that needs to be done. We don't need these people opinions.

LOL, I think certain journos like Sessler are trying to change the narrative, not sure what the motivation behind that is, there will be PLENTY of time to talk about games, but the fact that third-party publishers will be releasing most of their games on both platforms necessitates the graphical comparison given almost everything will be basically equal.

And I don't think he comes off as dismissive to the tech. He specifically mentions how the PS4 is the more powerful system, here.

Xbox One: $500
PS4: $400
Microsoft's benevolence: Priceless

Microsoft could and will slash the price if the console falls behind in sales, significantly. But that is unlikely, imo. The launch lineup looks good, the multimedia capabilities aren't an insignifiant element in the eyes of somes customers and, above all, the brand is really powerful in North America.

Oof, lots of hate in here. I feel like he was on to something when he talked about marketing's focus on resolution numbers. This point I totally agree with. I'd actually prefer a 900p game with added effects to a sterile 1080p version of it.

My reply on YT:

Adam, I agree that resolution is not be all and end all of the next gen consoles.I expect that more titles down the line will attain resolutions between 720p and 1080p on PS4.But, when one console does it better than another, it signifies gap in power(+ also happens to be cheaper) & speaks to the long term of potential of the advantageous platform. In the beginning it's more than games (eg: WiiU) and people wouldn't like to pay $60 for the inferior version. After 7 yrs people expected better.

My biggest beef with Sessler, Klepeck and others are that they take a point of view almost as if they're looking down on people. "Oh I don't get into that resolution nonsense, most won't be able to tell the difference, and I play games for their gameplay, not graphics." Well no shit.

Tell ya what, coming into this next gen is really opening my eyes in regards to a lot of journalists.

It's assumed that somebody watching a video for Adam Sessler's opinions would already know the obvious.

Oh no, it's not his audience doesn't know the obvious.

But his attitude has been "sure, the PS4 is cheaper. And, sure, games run better on it. And, you're right, it's more powerful hardware...

But does any of that really matter, when you think about it?"

It's just a shit opinion to have.

That backlash is very good for media/business/industry. All forms of media encourage this kind of behavior, typically. They may say it but the reality is they benefit from stirring the nest.

Awesome. Maybe you can help me turn on my brain.

A ruse that a huge chunk of gaming press are aiding and abetting through apathy.

What's better? A game that looks good or a game that looks better?

I am sure if you asked a child if they wanted a cake with sparklers on it for their birthday, they would take that cake over one that had a deeper/taste under just plane frosting.

like somebody else said its not graphics vs gameplay...these games have the same gameplay with a massive resolution disparity caused by worse performance at higher res.....

This is why I held off from getting a blu-ray player for years. I mean, what if the blu-ray movies I bought were shitty? I had an collection of DVD movies that were great, and was worried the better specs of the blu-ray player would jinx that.

Let's be honest , these "journalists" who you speak of won't be paying a cent for these systems. I trust people who pay for their stuff, not the ones who don't.

There are very few journalists, it's glorified PR in a lot of cases

Why is the media not finding out about other third party games?
Why haven't they asked about Assassin's Creed 4 for example?

I'm wondering if there is a resolution disparity for AC4 as well or if it is the same on both consoles. Same with Watch Dogs, what resolution is that game aiming for on both consoles?

Why aren't the media just doing their job? Why are they all sitting there twiddling their thumbs and talking about their own opinion? Why are they just accepting these stupid responses from Microsoft and certain developers? Why aren't they following up with tougher questions?

I really don't get it!

Well, duh, it has sparklers. Only an idiot would pass that up.

Honest question: If the issue was backwards; PS4 games as 720p vs Xbone's 1080p....would we have the same journalistic apologism?

Seeing what they did to sony last gen, probably not. We would have headlines all over the place touting the Xbox is more powerful.

I think bc they'll find out in like a week?

"It's all about the games" is such a silly argument when all of Xbox Ones problems are directly caused by the focus shifting away from the games.

The phrase should be used as a further indictment of Microsoft, not a defense.

You do have a point. On the other hand, it's not everything we should be talking about, right? I mean, surely it's important to address that if you care about it, but, from what I took from the video, Adam Sessler is worried it might take the attention away of other interesting stuff. He doesn't even talk about Call of Duty and Battlefield, he's thinking about the topic in a general way.

So that's why I can see his point. Adam Sessler won't cover technical stuff, but there are other places we can go and see a journalist talking about it. Rev3 isn't about that.

His bias is obvious. He threw a complete tantrum on twitter over the God of War trophy and continued to complain even after the name of the trophy was changed. He constantly defended Xbox One's DRM. He tried to say that the price difference wasn't nearly as much as everyone is making it out to be because Playstation Plus should be added to the price of the PS4 (what about Xbox Live and its hidden cost), he whined that he wasn't given free things and threatened to leave the industry over it, and now he is completely downplaying performance issues. I mean, fucking really?

My biggest beef with Sessler, Klepeck and others are that they take a point of view almost as if they're looking down on people. "Oh I don't get into that resolution nonsense, most won't be able to tell the difference, and I play games for their gameplay, not graphics." Well no shit.

They would rather play the same game with the same gameplay but with shittier graphics and pay $100 extra because graphics ain't gonna matter.

I don't understand why they would destroy their own credibility over this.

Why haven't they asked about Assassin's Creed 4 for example?

Because they're too busy posting comparison videos and screenshots of AC4 current and next-gen in which one of the biggest differences between them is....resolution! I think nearly every site has posted a comparison video for that game.

Probably because Ubisoft won't give 'em any answers because it'll interfere with their rollout plan for AC4/Watchdogs. Frankly, people have too high of an estimation of the information people in the games press can get out of publishers if those publishers don't want to give up info.
