Excuse me, I'm going to drag out my soap box for this.

Let me explain a little about myself. I'm 44 years old and have been playing home video consoles since the original Odyssey in 1974. Thats 40 years. I've bought just about every major piece of video game hardware released in the North American market as well as some sort of gaming pc since the late 80s. I'm not without my favorites. My preferences have me gravitating towards Sega, and Microsoft. Each system they released, I got at or near launch and were my primary gaming platforms.

Also I'm not someone who exist just as a video game consumer. I was an A student, ran after school clubs, went to and graduated college, and have a successful career in I.T. that goes back 25+ years. I've also been married for over 20 years, have four kids and have been active in the community. Your basic well rounded individual.

You aren't maladjusted? You must be in the minority, according to Adam Sessler's coworker, Tara Long:

I find it insulting how my concerns about a $500 product is somehow dismissed as the ravings of a 13 fan boy. When I go shopping for a dryer, or a TV, questions such as "why does this item cost more but does less of what I want" are taken serious. I don't see the writers of consumer reports getting on twitter having a freak out and defending and covering a brand. Also if there are issues with the PS4 launch, SAY SOMETHING. While we are at it, why isn't anyone in the press saying anything about Nintendo?

Watching his interview with phil, it is almost as if Microsoft handed Adam the questions he was to ask. As if there was a script. There were no followups. The message of this video was, ignore the negative information, its not a big deal, we need you to buy this product. It is your duty to buy this product. As if the industry could not exist or move forward without the Xbox One. Has Adam gotten to the point where he wont say anything negative about a major product? So long as we buy stuff, watch his videos, and keep quiet apparently that makes him happy?

If Adam Sessler wants to rebrand his youtube stuff as entertainment or infomercial, I'm fine with that. Don't do reviews, don't say what Rev 3 is doing is news. Its an entertainment channel that features a couple of guys and girls talking about video games.

Great response. I don't have nearly as much experience under my belt as you (only 24 years of gaming compared to 39), but your opinion is analogous to my own. The bolded part in particular.

Nice. Real nice.

What grinds my gears is that I've been trying to break into the game "journalism" scene for a few years now, and have thus far managed to find abysmal success on small sites only a few people actually visit. I've pitched all kinds of thoughtful features to the bigger sites about the problems facing the industry from both perspectives, both as a consumer and a reporter of news. Yet, unless I churn out some PR spiel supporting one console/developer or straight up posting click-bait, no one will bother to answer my submission queries. I know it's all about the clicks because gaming sites are dying in droves while only a handful stay afloat, let alone profit, but are we really at the point where the truth only matters until it breaks the bank? This console launch especially it seems that consumers were purposefully kept in the dark about two very imperfect machines in a thinly veiled attempt to keep this industry afloat and encourage folks to buy, buy, buy.

I feel like game journalists are all afraid for their jobs these days, perhaps that's leading them to choose sides and downplay facts so as not to get on any console maker's bad side? That would make for an interesting feature too, not that anyone will buy it...

Top drawer. Bravo

Comparing people who talk about games to arms dealers, thats why you get so much flak for your "journalism"

What an complete tool.

Cant believe he tweeted that. That is so waaaay out of line. No real journalist would even make that comparison.

Microsoft giving away consoles to anyone claiming themselves as press back in 2006/7 has spoilt this industry.
Everyone thinks they're entitled to everything. Which they are, as long as you toe the company line and watch what you say.
The whole thing needs to be burnt to the ground, and some new shoots fight their way through the ash.

People like Sessler have been shitting on next gen for months, now they are foaming at the mouth for early consoles to be sent to them.

It's all for pre-launch coverage hype and money (post-launch coverage not as big); not because they want to inform us about anything.

Especially now as it's a hot topic issue in the world. He has really lost his mind.

Sessler provides a common sense expectation in June, then a few months later says it doesn't matter when his favorite falls down on the job. Then he wonders why people are losing respect for his insane, seemingly meth driven rants on Twitter where he calls gamers the equivalent of terrorists.

Gaming journalism's Rush Limbaugh has arrived.

Did he really compare us to arms dealers?
Especially now that it's a very sensible subject?
What an idiotic thing to say, but coming from him it shouldn't be surprising.

That makes me incredibly sad. Before the whole Xbone DRM defending (and even a bit after that), Sessler was right up there.

No, that would be stupid! He compared us to the people who buy WMDs from arms dealers.

Honestly, fuck Sessler.

If it wasn't for us "chemical weapons" dealers, Xbox would still be riddled with DRM and expecting Indie developers to be brought onto their platform by seasoned publishers.

Like that one guy said, we're investing upwards of $400 to $500 into these things, god forbid we should speak out about stuff that bothers us.

What did Sessler do during the DRM situation? What did Tara Long do? Nothing. They wait for us to make light of it, then reap the page views when these stories break.

It's fine that Sessler wants to be "in love with video gaming." We all do. Doesn't mean we kiss its ass at every possible chance. Be the bigger man, Adam. Speak against things you know are wrong. And if you don't understand why their important (like 1080p vs. 720p) just admit as much.

This cynicism, while frustratingly likely, is what worries me the most.

I've been gaming for a while, and I wonder with these guys. What kind of bizzaro world do they live in where graphics power isn't important to gaming? It's always been important and forever will be. The recent reports of CoD having framerate issues with the PS4 shows we still have a ways to go before we have enough graphics computing power to handle everything developers what to do and everything gamers want.

It's stupid and blatantly obvious that there is an alternate motive for such statements. If you want to play Halo, but an Xbone, I don't care, buy all your multiplats for your Xbone, it doesn't matter to me. But denying that better graphics aren't important is just tomfoolery, if that was the case, why would they even bother going to a new generation of consoles? Why do they upgrade phones every year with faster processors? Why do they keep pushing for better graphics cards on desktop PCs?

These people are the like the FOX news of gaming "journalism".

She isn't necessarily wrong.

I'm pissed off that this is the direction Sessler is choosing to respond, but the way a lot of people having been approaching it is pretty damn disgusting and embarrassing. Again, I find it odd that we have this double standard where we can throw whatever shit we want to at them, but God forbid they say anything to be taken in by our precious eyes and ears. I've seen some good and well presented arguments here, and those are the ones that should be taken to head respectfully. But the vast majority of what is being brought out is why we're still a long way to be taken seriously outside of the community.
