It's become apparent to me that game journalists only care about a system having inferior tech if the name Nintendo is on the box. If it's Microsoft, it "doesn't really matter" and it's "all about the games"

Not sure if this post is in jest or not, but regardless there's nothing wrong with that. It acknowledges shortcomings that both consoles have while providing reasons you might want it anyway. That's exactly what journalists should be doing.

In some cases I agree but in others, there is either something going on or just blatant ignorance. You can't just brush off some of thee findings with a broad stroke because of a well worded statement.

There is some things that are wrong here and several videos have already been posted of contradictions. But if you or anyone else wants to type up a fancy statement then those of us who are interested in pointing things out between two next gen platforms will continue to do so. That way most of the consumers looking for opinion can decide.

But let's not mistake some of the ignorance said by some people as being paid off. That doesn't mean they are free of criticism though as you see by this big thread. Something doesn't seem right here regarding the media not doing their jobs a little more.

When you have random rumors from people trying to discredit PS4 as well as cryptic tweets then you start thinking about things a little more.

Even going off the base assumption that each company treats journos exactly the same, journos make a name for themselves in this business by having access to what gamers want. In the US, that means the big names are the ones whose friends and associates are in Redmond rather than Tokyo.

The PS4 is also the first Sony launch in history where you can't provide a week to half a year worth of previews just by slopping a few hundred bucks at Play-Asia, without having to please a Sony media relations minion, so it's probably a bit of an adjustment for some of these people.

Anyone into tech and lets say TV's for example, would read a review on the Latest Series 8 Samsung Vs the Latest LG, now if the Samsung had better blacks/brighter screen/ less blur/higher or clearer refresh rate etc etc than the LG but cost more then this would be in the summary. The Review would state the difference and facts as they are and then leave the price there to say "Yes the Samsung is Better but is it £x's better than the LG?" for example.

Now if you had the same situation but the LG had all the better features etc and was £x'x cheaper then the summary would be "Well the LG is better on all areas than the Samsung (see Non-justified tech piece above) and is Cheaper, the decision is a no brainer".

And this is the EXACT situation we have here on these new consoles, The Cheapest one is the Most powerful, with the most options and is undeniably the best piece of hardware Bang for Buck or simply Bang in total this is undeniable. But there is no integrity or loyalty to the consumer now, with comments like (who can really see, and only fanboys care), it really saddens me that one of my favourite hobbies my entire life has been ruined and reduced to sad people in positions that should know better lying or deceiving the public in this way. Anyone not techy or just plain not interested will be given duff info from these mainstream sources that are looking to underplay and down value the clear discrepancy, and this is simply plain wrong.

I do not buy into the theory that MS have gone MoneyHat mad, I can only assume there is a dire fear within the industry that is petrified of the death of Consoles(lack of MS advertising Budget etc) and so they are vainly (and naively) trying to keep the X1 alive with false hope and cherry aid.

Stop all the Gumf and tell us the facts and let us decide, 12 months ago it was 1080/60 or bust. One console is giving us that (by and large) and one appears to miss the board by a fair margin. Shifting goal posts now is sad and desperate and only comes across as the desperate acts of Shills or lier's (Neither of which are good in a consumer driven environment).

I only hope that once both are out and we have games on each that are compelling and different we return to some genuine Journalistic intent.....although my hopes are very dashed!! /rant off

I think this is a really good post, but I think you're jumping the gun on the bolded. These are crappy launch games we're talking about. These kind of problems will sort themselves out over the course of a couple of generations of games. The graphics will still show the power discrepancy though, there's a definite PS4 advantage there. Resolution isn't the only graphics bottleneck..
 
People making the TV analogy are pretty spot on. This is the equivalent of CNET taking two TVs and saying "Yeah, one has better image quality and costs less, but most people can't tell. And you know, the content is what matters." They'd be rendering their sole purpose useless if they did that. At THIS point in time, people need clear cut information to make their buying choice, not this bizarre PR damage control being spouted. Truly an incomprehensible situation.

The cynic in me thinks a lot of these "Journalists" were "encouraged" by a certain manufacturer to constantly point out their competitors genuine flaws as much as possible last gen and these same "Journalists" are now being "encouraged" to not discuss a certain manufacturers genuine flaws this gen......

I don't think he's being paid by either manufacturer, but at any given time he has the opinion that will get him clicks online.

How close was that previous video to E3? Everything was 1080 at E3.

This resolultion debate sooner or later has to be analized for what it will mean for the future of the multiplatform games.
How much this gap will impact on the vision and development of those games, if we should expect cut features due to the limitations of the Xbox One as time goes and games become more demanding than some crossgen.
I'm not trying to downplay the resolution differences, but to me there are more pressing implications to begin to foresee.
 
It frustrates me that guys like this are arguing against points no one is making ( no one has asked for shitty yet pretty) and constantly show disdain towards their audience.

The relationship between gaming companies > gaming media > gamers is Toxic.
 
Why do people give this guy attention? I think were at the point where public game enthusiasts are well past their useful life.

It's a fucking terrible analogy unless the 2 different TV's also had different media for them which COULD NEVER be played on the competing television, or one might do PIP and the other doesn't or one has an awful remote control and the other is incredible. Maybe one of the TV's has a buzzing noise the other doesn't.

Sorry, that's not a good analogy at all.

I like Sessler, but this whole thing is just really unfortunate to him. I think it's just a case of journalists talking to each other and then influencing opinions. It happens here on Neogaf also, at least I have changed my mind on various subjects. That's not a bad thing imo.

The thing is on this subject he is dead frickin wrong! Hopefully the press will smarten up a bit, because it's getting really bizar.

Sure it's worth discussing and a big issue but it's simply not something worth discussing more than everything else combined.

The accusations of bias are becoming completely out of control. There's simply no reason for such a bias to exist in the vast majority of cases people are claiming there is. It's making discussion of articles very difficult as many members here feel a need for every opinion posted to absolutely line up to their own and any attempt to challenge a narrative that has been established here is shut down immediately. That discourages critical thinking, I'm not sure why so many desire views to be homogenized to align with their own when there are multiple valid ways of thinking in nearly every situation. There is no conspiracy in the media to favor one console-maker and thinking such a thing borders on craziness. I welcome diverse views and it's a real shame that some here don't.

Yes, his focus is on wanting something new on the game design side, but at the same time, clearly to him, back then, 1080p/60 was some given, a minimum we should be expecting from new systems, that technical advance like that for our $400 or $500 should be expected rather than congratulated. Not something to get super excited over, something to just expect.

Now that it's not happening, at least so much on one system, you'd think he'd be able all over it for the systems 'not doing their job'. But he's not.

Diminished expectations I guess.

IMO, these guys are trying to even the playing field to keep this "war" interesting... Or some of them are biased like a lot of people tend to be and theyre letting it show.
 
I actually feel sorry for Sony at this point...
They had years of the gaming press ridiculing them for the technical problem / deficiencies of the PS3... They step up to the plate and deliver a new console which fixes all the PS3 eccentricities and makes it developer friendly to boot.... Sit back and await the Gaming press plaudits....
But no, the gaming press have decided it's possibly too good now and a console like the XB1 is sufficient.....

it's the constant and massive downplaying of these differences that is such a copout. remember when all these "journalists" pointed out every damn difference the ps3 version of a multiplat had in their reviews? "the ps3 version looks washed out. the ps3 version had some hiccups. the ps3 version had less vibrant colours. you are better off playing the xbox 360 version if you want the best version out there outside the pc.

This was needed.

It shouldn't have been because the bias, along with constant insults towards a huge percentage of gamers (pixel-counters, fanboys, internet mobs, how dare you care for a console's power now that we say it doesn't matter this time, etc), is so repetitive and in our faces.

At this point the FUD-spreading, the downplaying and pandering to MS, the double standard, the forced 'balanced reporting' of parity based on magical features, the damage control, the press picking up exact buzz-words and slogans as spread by MS, etc, etc, is so blatant and widespread, that it's becoming all the more difficult to understand where all those people who shout "lol conspiracy theories, nothing to see here" are coming from and what they mean.

90% of the games people buy are going to be multiplatform. The analogy is perfectly fine for anyone who has ever bought a game by EA, Activision, Capcom, Konami, Ubisoft, Square/Edios, Altus, Warner, 2K/Rockstar, Namco, etc. The analogy is perfectly fine.

Half-in-jest.

Its just really predictable, that's all. We won'tl learn anything new in the reviews. The only thing really left to parse is (are?) the visuals and tech. We know what the launch titles are. We know what their philosophies are with respect to their ecosystems. I think most people have formed a decision based on those outlooks (at least those first 3-5 million owners)

What we quite haven't settled is which system will put out games that are consistently 1080p at a smooth framerate. And I don't think the enthusiast press will be able to answer that question. They don't know either. In a sense their reviews will be kind of pointless to people who find that important. Those folks, will have to a wait a while before making a decision on what hardware to buy. Everyone else has already made their decision (everyone else being those who buy a console during the launch window).
