Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

Game Informer editor Dan Ryckert has shared his thoughts after spending a couple hours playing Xbox1 Launch Title Ryse: Son of Rome

I spent two hours with the Xbox One title, but it felt like I was entering random numbers into a computer rather than actually playing a video game.

After a painfully generic story intro, the game began teaching me similarly uninspired combat mechanics. While it tries to sound like an in-depth action game with familiar elements like perfectly-timed blocks and focus meters, the actual experience is anything but deep.

With my left hand completely off the controller, I was able to slice and dice through tons of enemies simply by inputting the same sequence ad nauseum. On a couple of occasions, the game would shift to sequences that involved me defending an area with crossbow stations or ordering my men to block arrows with their shields. These were somehow even less exciting than the tedious swordplay.

Not surprised based on the E3 demo.

Doesn't sound good for MS and Crytek. Game Informer can be pretty forgiving by most standards.

Sacrifice to the Gods if old.

Ryse: Son of Rome feels like all sizzle and no steak. It's a procession of CPU-controlled warriors lining up to fall on protagonist Marius' sword in a stylish slow-mo ballet of blood and dismemberment. Killing enemies feels less and less triumphant with each strike, which is kind of a problem when the main focus of the game is seeing just how high you can stack the corpses.

Haven't seen anything on the game since E3, but given that presentation that's about what I expected.

Let's make this thread complete with all his impressions in short form:

A game that has looked terrible since the first time it was shown is, in fact, terrible?

Well now isn't that a surprise!

Like I said in the other thread, I don't need it to reinvent the wheel. I just want a fun hack n' slash game that is set in a beautifully realized ancient Rome. I think it will more than fit the bill with those sort of expectations. Besides, I eat stuff like that up.

Dialing phone numbers is fun though. Its much better than waiting on the line when I'm put on hold.

Atleast this means Ryse will be as responsive as those call center machines though.

I don't think the preview coverage has left anything to the imagination. You are either OK with simplistic combat and pretty graphics, or your not.

Sounds like this game is going to get very mixed reception.

Graphics look good but I'm definitely going to wait for full reviews.

I'll never understand how enthusiast gamers could get hyped for this game. Even with all the fancy graphics, the gameplay looked so uninspiring.

Dan Ryckert is generally a really positive person too. He even recently wrote an article about how people need to lighten up because games are so fun. So, it's very surprising to hear him blast a game.
