12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

That looks... amazing.

First time I'm actually hyped about next gen.

Call me a dirty casual, but stuff like this or Xbox Fitness are more appealing to me than any of the launch games on either system.

Highly disagree as does Sony and MS. Both the 360 and PS3 had become multimedia hubs by the end of their lifecycles. Just take a look at the stats from both companies on NFLX usage and HBO Go. People want more out of their consoles.

Yeah, but it's still just press a button. Using Netflix was pretty much the same as starting a game. The more you layer on, the less people will use it. Never underestimate the laziness of the average consumer. In real world situations, I've seen people too lazy too switch from the standard definition channel on cable to the high definition one -- it drives me nutty, but they just didn't care. Slick interfaces draw in the geek crowd, simple interfaces draw in the mass market.

That was pretty impressive. The Skype stuff was pretty cool especially with the tracking and zooming. Need to convince my parents to get it now as well.

totally agree...my sister live in north of italy and me in the south we use ipad and facetime to see 1 time at day...and is okay...but after seeing this....i could buy the system just for this

I love this. This is an area Microsoft is untouchable. The W8 presentation makes this so much better. I'm still not buying one however I loved it and multimedia is something I care about. I watch a lot of TV and I'm with the whole media vision Microsoft has. I'm just not going to pay more for it. But this is impressive, intuitive and one of the things Microsoft does right. Now if they weren't so defensive about everything but showed this kind of stuff early on, they might have got money from me... But nah. Still this is amazing. No one should be able to hate this.

GAF is so hard trying to find flaws in the video

Some people are more invested in the many months of posts calling it all bullshit. They've got to keep trying until the bitter end.

Interface looks nice and fast, though I want to hear about notification options for the user.

I know this is the way media consumption has evolved, but I can't help but feel the OS is centered around how to best lose deprive us of focusing on one thing. I might sound old fashioned or something, but the complete focus on how "everything is always at your fingertips" and such rubs me the wrong way.

dont worry u can always have ur 486 with windows for workgroup or os/2 warp on it :)

The UI is so fluid it is amazing. Kinect actually seems to have a great use. Now I want these or similar voice commands on my PS4.
:-(

One key takeaway tho....don't expect SNAP! at launch. Why do I say that? Well if snap was working, it would have made more sense to use the function with the Skype portion of the demo. What's the sense of having Skype, Snap & TV if you can't use them as they were designed. Leaving TV to go to dedicated app kills the who selling point of having skype and TV on the console. So prepare for the announcement.

Where do they film this stuff? Is it like one of their houses? I think it's weird. Why not just demo the thing at the lab or something.

Anyhoo, looks slick. I like.

I cant believe how good it looks. So much for all the gaf "insiders" saying it was totally broken. Just 2 more weeks until we get to try it out ourselves.

With all the FUD, I am not just impressed, I am truly floored at how well that works. So glad I did not let all the negative stuff influence keeping my preorder. I will say that MS still has to prove this isn't smoke and mirrors but that was awesome.

Pretty smooth and looks decent, was it worth the sacrifices to the gaming side of the hardware? i guess we wont know for a while yet. As someone that uses games consoles in a different room to viewing tv etc alot of this wont matter to me.

I think that has ran into a world of its own, they didnt say it was broken totally they said there were issues with snap and party chat.

Good demonstration, but I still don't see myself using any of this stuff which is what is still MS's biggest failing so far (their focus).

And as another gamer i see myself using most of this without having to mess about with different platforms. Their focus is based on behaviour collected from their gamers. Majority of Xbox gamers done more than just game on Xbox 360.

It really isn't. ¬_¬.... Your reach is getting galactic

So it was recorded footage and not live tv?

If you watch the ESPN footage, it starts at the exact same point the first time it's shown, and then the second. Why would that be if they're watching live TV?

They said snap and party chat were broken. Were snap and party chat shown here?

It looks fantastic. Adding the HDMI in port and integrating everything into one box with Kinect was a great idea.

It happens between 3:25 and 3:46. The speedometer is off by 5.

He is still playing when he switches out of the game without pausing. It could just be that it does not instantly pause the game when going home. A better indication would be if they paused-> home-> game to see where it left off.

GAF is so hard trying to find flaws in the video

Have you ever seen a situation here where people haven't tried to find flaws here? It's not unique to one company.

However, I will say this - it's awesome that they do. It's crowd sourced fact checking, and it rocks. People throw out concerns to see if they stick, and others shoot down those concerns ... When then don't get discounted, they get investigated - that's why so many fascinating things come out of the forum. Yeah, we see a lot of conspiracy theories, but it's worth it for the outcome.

I guess I am the only one who used Kinect one for video calls (with Messenger). Tracking is already a Kinect v1 feature. (Haven't used it after first time novelty, so there is that).

I used it frequently to chat with family. It would track to the loudest voice, which isn't always the right person so one kid can shout and then it just focuses on him or her leaving the rest of the family cut off. Pretty awesome, and it's functionally has yet to be matched.

I'm not adding extra conditions. Why wasn't snap shown in this video? That was my question, and you went ultra defensive about it.
Maybe they wanted to stayed focus on other things? If you try to cram too much stuff into one video you might not get the message across about all of the features. But the snap functionality has been shown recently working in game.

This is, truth be told, the first time I've actually had some genuine interest in the One. Dat next-gen multitasking is pretty damned slick, and it's most definitely going to be a big step up from what the PS4's UI can do. Seems like a very intelligent evolution for the living room experience, especially since it's aimed at negating the habit of looking away from your TV to multitask on your phone or tablet. Still a terrible shame that so much of it is locked behind a paywall...

Also, I have to wonder how Microsoft is going to handle the task of getting non-GAF'ers to actually hook up their cable boxes to their consoles--seems like a huge up-hill battle, albeit an important one.

Ahh I see after watching it again.

1. They have mentioned Snap being broken, which wasn't shown.
2. They have mentioned Xbox Live party issues, like party chat being broken which wasn't shown.
3. They have also said Xbox live in general being a mess.

As I stated, the UI LOOKS cool, but that is about it to me.

You can multi task on ps4 as well, i dont know how it would be a big step up. Snap and ?.

The speedometer should not have increased if this is the case. It was higher by 5 when coming back and the time of day and position on the track are different as well.

This is amazing. I'm going to miss pressing the guide button to check friends and go to party chat seamlessly without loading an app but I guess I can use snap for that.

Damn, looks great. It'd be nice if you could use nicknames for things. Having to say, "Forza Motorsport Five," and, "Internet Explorer," is a bit of a mouthful.

What is the deal with the discrepancies in the Forza footage, though? Why would they mess with that?

edit: n/m, watching again it just seems the Xbox pauses the game for you if you don't, and it did it after switching screens.

I'm looking at the time stamps you gave and when he switches out it's at 14, and when he comes back it's at 15.

Here are the screenshots from when Forza is paused and when it is unpaused:
