12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Looked really good... The fact that the X1 can play the same multiplatform games
lower resolution
as the PS4 AND do all of this stuff is awesome.

Really looking forward to trying this...

Annnnddddd here it comes....The inevitable bad Microsoft news stories that follow after every positive piece of X1 news on Gaf.

They got a incoming call during the record game edit, at 7:38, but they didn't have a notification pop up? This was after the Skype call.

Again. He actually comes back in at 3:39 where the speedometer is 15. I don't know about the track stuff though.

It's definitely the same track. As to why the speedometer is different...

It looks like he might be pressing the trigger as the game is leaving it's suspended state based on the reflection, but it's inconclusive...

Pretty shitty if this was all mocked, especially with the console coming out in just a couple of weeks...

If it really works like that then this is the most impressive thing I have seen from Next-Gen so far.

I don't believe its truely a live demo, its more like a demo.

There are some questionable things. That NFL content was definitely simulated (for obvious reasons) some edits looked weird. Well just have to wait until the real world.

However it does look responsive.2 weeks to find out!

Pretty sure sleepfree isn't either one of theirs GT. That's the GT of the guy who called them, which means you get updates on calls other people on your friends list get?

This is the notifications tab. That's the old notification for the call they just got done with.

Really? It's not that different from their pre-E3 reveal, where they showed that fake OS demo on-stage. This is simply an actual materialisation of that promise, ready to release in 2 weeks.

I'm actually kind of surprised so many were blown away. It is extremely impressive, but we were shown this demo months ago, only this time it's actually real.

I should have given a better description of my thoughts. They did demo it a long time ago, but they WAY in which they did it this time seemed much better to me - very conversational, a little deeper in terms of what they were showing, the set up - all (to me at least) showcased what they tried to show earlier in a much more consumer friendly manner. Hope that explains my post a little better.

Er....you guys critiquing the demo DO know that a whole whack of reporters were there and got to see them do this in person right?

There is a fair number of articles popping up now about this demo.....

Looks great. May be edited, but not buying "it's fake." The Giant Bomb guys mentioned in their latest Xbox One video that they sat through an ~hour long live demo of the dash and came away really impressed, which lends credence to the authenticity of the experience presented here.

"Xbox: go home."

lol

In any case, I find a lot the 180s amusing. Outside the rumored Snap stuff, are people really surprised that the UI and integration came together for MS, of all companies? I thought the problem wasn't the system's promises but its foci.

*shrug*

Whoah, when it started with Welcome Marc I thought something meta was about to happen... :D

As a Kinect hater, this looks very impressive. If what CBOAT said is true then those dev's are crazy pulling this together so smoothly late in the day.

Problems I still have with it is:

- Paywall and value of Gold, as a service it is rubbish to me as a single player.
- Security of Kinect.
- I don't want to be interrupted with game requests, phone calls or what have you in the middle of a game or watching a movie. Its neat in theory but in real world scenarios I would at best use this to open up a browser to find out hot to beat a boss or something. Which is neat, but I use my smartphone for that now... so not really adding anything other than a little more convenience.
- Those adverts, maybe you can disable them though.

The fitness thing and this shows off what their ideas were much better than the job they had done so far, amazing they have left it this late to show the best features. I guess they didn't plan to launch this year and its all been thrown together but still, their ability to convey what this idea was about is nothing short of atrocious.

Side note, Forza looked pretty bad to me... could see a lot of jaggies.

Thats the difference, its real. People are so used to companies saying "this is what we are going for" and then jsut not delivering on that promise. now we have seen the xbox one do this for real its awesome because they achieved what they said they were going to.

Hmm, I guess this is where our perspectives are different.

I've always had the confidence that MS/Sony would be able to deliver their core promises ( still mildly skeptical on Gaikai everywhere, but that's super aspirational ), so to me, I see this as "you've finally finished it, good on ya.", rather than being blown away.

I know there's a lot of skepticism in terms of MS/Sony and their OS with all the rumour mills, but in general, we're still talking about some of the most competent engineers in the world. I don't expect them to bullshit on what they can deliver in terms of UI experience.

I am a MASSIVE xbox fan and day1 purchaser. There is not FUD on my part. You don't know what you are talking about. Good fight? I was posting factual news that is interesting to GAF readers, esp UK day 1 buyers like me. I don't care if it's on the back of good news or not and it's certainly nothing to do with this video.

Note to you. Don't be a dick.

Pretty cool stuff actually, and it looks beautiful, I love the design visually, but some of it, I mean, I just do not see how the voice command stuff is more efficient.

Specific example of questioning the practicality of the voice stuff, at around the 3 minute mark for example. Controller in hand, it seems to already be highlighted on Forza 5, yet instead of pressing the X button to launch it, he takes the time to say "X Box, go to Forza Motorsport 5." Could have pressed the X button before even saying "X Box," so while the novelty of that particular aspect is pretty cool, that actual usefulness of it is questionable.

Other stuff though, like the TV guide, pretty cool with the voice navigation.

I can also see this voice stuff being used in my Workplace believe it or not. I am in charge of the technology we use in our training classrooms for training a sales force of 2700 people. A lot of times we may have an offsite adviser for the class. They often use Skype. Having a simple hands free way for our class trainers to have those people in their class is pretty damn cool,
We also have a fair amount of externally hosted websites that are part of our training curriculum. Just bringing them up quickly on IE with your voice is something I know would also appeal to the trainers.

Bottom line is in the world of Corporate America, being able to do stuff like that for $500 is nothing from a cost perspective. I think MS should really start looking at the business market and the potential there, especially from a training perspective. If for some strange reason any MS person happens to be reading this, feel free to reach out to me via PM.

With the above said, I very much look forward to checking it out. I have the One preordered along with the PS4, so me being nit-picky like this about the practicality of some of the voice stuff is simply me being a consumer of the device questioning the practical application of some of the features as I do not see myself using all of them. I am sure others will, and that is awesome.

Have to say this video really peaked my interest overall. Good stuff.

It's kind of obvious why MS didn't show this beforehand. It wasn't ready AT ALL. At E3, the dash was probably in a state that would make Windows Vista look like the greatest OS ever.

Anyone have ANY leaks about the Sony UI...yeah I know, they're probably going full out at their even on the 12th, but still...there should be at least SOMETHING.

Looks nice and smooth and feature filled. Good stuff.

Yes, it's clearly edited here and there. But it's a demo.

Realistically they should have left errors in there and just played along with them, because its both more realistic and more credible. Until we see real world usage of the tech, it's still speculation as to whether it weill work this smoothly.

I think it might be continuing the input until it actually realizes it's suspended (in which it automatically pauses the game). In other words, you should probably pause before you switch lol.

I am sorry if this has been asked, but this thread is moving rather quickly.

Serious question, what in this video could have been the reason that Albert Penello said they couldn't show the OS a couple about 10 days ago? He mentioned :

Even though we have rights to populate the *store* with Musicians, Artists, Movies, Actors, etc. – when it comes to us (as in Microsoft) publishing those types of things for marketing materials, it requires an extensive amount of approvals from those same Studios, Actors, Agents, Musicians, etc.

Also whenever we use game footage, the creator of the game wants to approve the footage. And finally, when something like this gets created, it needs to be used in a variety of ways that a direct feed video doesn’t work for.

Coordinating a live demo that is using approved game footage, and making sure every piece of content on-screen is approved by all the content owners is a logistical nightmare. So all of those constraints means it’s better sometimes to create your own video with already approved assets. EVERYONE does this. Every ad, every video, from every company does this for the same reasons.

Now, those same sorts of rights aren’t applied to the press. So there is a huge difference in what WE can put online vs. what the press can put online. That’s why, right now, we have a ton of press in SF seeing new live game builds and new dash builds. I’m sure you’ll be hearing back from them about how close this video is.

Is it safe to assume they got permission from all those people to show it I guess? I am thinking it may have taken about 10 days to get everything approved? Or they simply need a few more days of tweaking and finalizing the OS?

I have been quite outspoken against Kinect, but I can't lie. This is neat as hell, if not outright amazing. It's the first time my mind has actually started opening to all of this.

One question.

I see the UI running smoothly. But, is this AFTER they download Day One patch? I doubt that MS employees download Day One patch. That's important. Will UI work smoothly like on this video AFTER downloading the Day One patch because that patch remove DRM ( but not completely ). Time will tell....soon.

Great video, I liked what I say from a tech standpoint. From a gaming standpoint, I actually have zero interest in these features being present in a console that I would buy. I'm too worried about the hardware overhead that features like this consume. I need maximum graphical output to feel confident in a console. From a purely software level though, it's obvious MS have some great ideas, but at what cost to performance?

Yap, you aren't the only one, this cought me off guard, very plesently surprised. Did not expect it.

Wasn't my intention to call out thread posters. More the trend of anything positive to the Xbox is downplayed on here and met with damn near unrealistic criticism.

Unless I'm blind, I'm seeing more than 90% positivity here, with only some GAFers playing detective.

And there's nothing wrong with that, as long as they're giving legitimate reasons and concerns to what they're seeing differently. And that matters, because then we can argue and debate about where who is wrong, or whatnot. It's constructive.

You're being no different by calling wolf just because there are factual news that aren't all good for Xbox. Sony got a ton of shit too for their Music Unlimited bullshit, and even wallpaper exlusion.
