Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Ice Climbers are more important than Golden Sun, confirmed
Sakurai picked the Ice Climbers from a list of classic characters to represent the original NES, which I would say is more important than Golden Sun. But even if you want to dismiss "importance," which I understand, Golden Sun still doesn't have a whole lot in its favor. It's been a decade since anyone cared about the series, and it doesn't have the retro appeal that something from the '80s does. Golden Sun is just a middling, abandoned IP floating out somewhere in Nintendo purgatory. There's absolutely no momentum to bring Isaac in as a character.

Personally, I just don't think Golden Sun is an important enough IP to deserve a playable character.

However adding a character would put a spotlight on the series and the characters and help build renewed interest in it. Arguably worked for PIt and the Kid Icarus franchise.

I can see Ridley being a playable character, but don't get disappointed when they choose to put Dark Samus in instead :p

If we were to go by this line of thinking then we would have never gotten Ness or any FE character in previous games. It's always possible regardless of how well the game has been received. I wouldn't mind a slot for Isaac or Felix.

I don't really get that. You're saying that people in general were more happy that Ice Climbers were announced in Melee than people would have been if Isaac was announced in their stead?

I'll be more than disappointed, I'll be devastated.

Where did I say anything about happiness? There are lots of minor/obscure/forgotten characters that would make certain sectors of the Internet "happy," but I don't see what that has to do with anything I said.

I can't see them using Dark Samus because Metroid Prime is way past its prime.

I see what you did there.

I don't think time is a criteria for selecting a character for this game. I don't really want Dark Samus in the game anyways but it would be hilarious if Sakurai puts her in there for shits n giggles.

And Bowser. But he changes sizes all the time, so I guess thats enough reason.

I have nothing to say for the other parts.

Well, in the Mushroom Kingdom happens crazy stuff.
Usually bowser changes size even during the game due to some device, being it kamek treatment or eating stars in Galaxy. And when defeated he reverts back into his original size, that compared with Mario's is consistent with their respective sizes in Smash
In the games even Mario and Luigi can turn into 60-feet-tall behemoths.

On the other hand the Metroid Universe is more "realistic" and the characters cannot change drastically in size. I'd exclude the NES game in which Ridley was a lot smaller, because it was due to technical limitations and he was always meant to be bigger.
Heck, even Kraid was the same size of Samus while from Super Metroid onward is tall twice the screen.

So you're saying, I'm rooting for the wrong character?

KRAID FOR SMASH 4!

EarthBound only came out three years before development on the first SSB began, and both games were made by HAL, so the Smash dev team had a preexisting attachment to the character of Ness. EarthBound also had the weight of Itoi, Iwata, and Miyamoto behind it. It was by no means a blockbuster game, but it was still significant to Nintendo.

Fire Emblem was a popular recurring series in Japan by the time Marth was included in Melee (it even had an anime adaptation), so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Decided to go on a blackout and forget about this game since it won't be here for at least a year and hype's killing me, lol.

I'll take a look at daily screens and that's all.

Until the next major reveal, that is all!

You're arguing that Ice Climbers were a better choice that a Golden Sun character, right? Tell me, which did they include characters such as Snake and Sonic in Brawl? To make the fans happy, no? Isn't that the point of adding any character? Of course there are other reasons, but there is no way that they would add ANY character without considering the fans' happiness.

So yeah, you're basically arguing that taking everything into consideration (importance, momentum, fans' happiness, whatever else goes into deciding who makes it) Ice Climbers were the better pick. And I just can't see how you'd think that.

Are you seriously comparing the "gateway" machine that allowed NES to exist in the West vs a cookie cutter JRPG that is mediocre at best?

I dunno, even Ice Climbers are hailed back in the arcades iirc

Yeah, I am. Ice Climbers, Pit, ROB Game & Watch. Four characters that didn't make it out of their era because they weren't good enough. Granted Golden Sun didn't make it out of its era either but I'm not seeing how they are SO MUCH the better choice as you seem to believe. Because they're retro? That's it? Seriously?

Looks like Mewtwo's not popular enough to be "saved" for a spot then!

Finding patterns for Sakurai to use is hilarious and backfires when you try to justify it (e.g. Mewtwo).

Also not unique enough? Yeah, clearly Wolf is not unique enough despite only sharing B moves (and even then only few). Might as well cut Lucas, Ike, Luigi, Samus, and Toon Link while we're at it!

You're over exaggerating here, they are different for the sake of being different, just flashy differences, Lucas and Luigi fight based on their personality and abilities from the games. I think Lucas is much better than Ness. Falco and Wolf fight just to be different from Fox.

I got the impression from using them that their moves did not make them feel unique but just gimmicky variations. On top of that they are all basically the same in concept, which to me says the time they wasted with both wolf and falco could have gone to a new franchise. Again the franchise can strongly be represented by just fox, and background stage cameos from everyone else.

Fire Emblem was a popular biannual series in Japan by the time Marth was included (it even had an anime adaptation), so I'm not sure what your point is there.

My point was if they were willing to put in characters that were not universally known or characters whose games were not successful or popular then there shouldn't be any problem in putting a character who's less significant than them. Hell, there were plenty of more significant characters at the time and they put Ness over all of them. It's not the only criteria they look at when selecting a character.

You're arguing that Ice Climbers were a better choice that a Golden Sun character, right?
No, I'm saying that Golden Sun isn't a big enough deal to warrant a playable character, and that the Ice Climbers were included because Sakurai wanted a retro NES representative. I never said anything about the Ice Climbers being a "better" choice than a Golden Sun character.

Good luck with that. When Mewtwo and Ridley are announced that will be all over the internet!

I think the logic behind Ridley is that every franchise (at least the major franchises) should have a main character, secondary character, and villain. Kirby has it. Zelda has it. Mario has it. Pokemon has it with Mewtwo.

Donkey Kong would have it if they included K Rool. Metroid would have it if they include Ridley
and Anthony Higgs

Besides, we're scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to newcomers at this point. Ridley is an iconic Nintendo character at this point and has been around since the original Metroid's release in 1986. If anyone deserves to be in at this point, it's him.

How not? Team Ninja may have worked on the game but it's still all 100% Sakamoto and Nintendo.

Woah woah woah when did Golden Sun franchise suddenly become disliked by people? It's a great series of games hopefully we see a fourth game for the 3DS

Dark Dawn embittered people :p

but seriously a Golden Sun rep would be cool... just not likely. That series deserves an Assist Trophy, and that's what it has.

Metroid is realistic, Smash Bros is not. It doesn't matter if Ridley was "intended" to be big in the original Metroid, the fact is he wasn't big in the final product and was also a reasonable size in the Melee opening as well. I suppose Super Metroid Ridley isn't his real size because Zero Mission rewrote the timeline right?

Even if Metroid tried to be consistent with scale it hardly is. Super Metroid Ridley is absolutely manageable in a Smash setting if he crawled around completely hunched like Bowser used to be. Zero Mission Ridley barely fits on screen along with Fusion Ridley. Even in Smash Bros just look at Ridley palming Samus like basket ball within the cut scene, then look at him during the actual fight.

Now about the NES limitations, please provide me a source. I see that said all the time and can't ever recall reading that in any official statement. As far as I can tell that line of thinking originated on Smash Boards and it just spread.

In all likelihood Ridley won't be playable, as sad as that would be because of his standing in the Nintendo universe, but BS reasons that equate to "he won't look right standing next to Samus" completely ignore everything else about the series.

Golden Sun deserves to get more love from Nintendo, it's a fantastic franchise that they just sit on. Dark Dawn while not as good as the first two games was still really enjoyable and set up things nicely for a 4th game

The comparison of Isaac (or any Golden Sun rep) to the Ice Climbers or ROB is pretty apt, actually - in that if you put money on them before the game was out you'd be insane. The Ice Climbers were on a list of a LOT of NES characters (unless I'm mistaken Balloon Fighter, Mach Rider, and probably Pit all being options) and ROB feels a lot like G&W and Wii Fit Trainer in the "only obvious in hindsight" sense.

I think that, if Sakurai wants to put another mid-profile post-2000 character in the game, he's a definite option, as are Shulk, and Chibi Robo, and so on. So he's possible, definitely, and it'd be silly to say otherwise, but as much as I hate to talk in terms of "slots" but I don't see him warranting inclusion outside of an Ice Climbers sort of quota system.

Similarly we've got the slot of "retro Japan Only character" that's pretty likely in my book but by no means certain. Takamaru is the most likely choice but there's always the possibility of Sabure Prince, or Donbe and Hikari, or Ayumi Tachibana... all of whom I'd LOVE to see but none of which I'm holding my breath for.

This this this!

Honestly Nintendo should use Smash as a tool to help bring back old characters like Brawl helped Pit get a new games after 15+ years.

I barely remember the game, aside from trying to type in that lengthy transfer code from the first game to Lost Age, missing like one or two letters twice and saying screw it and found someone with a link cable.

When I read the SA LP as a refresher, I found myself agreeing with most of the author's gripes (and it was almost all gripes). I don't remember Golden Sun's flashy super attacks and summons combined with Zelda-lite puzzles nostalgically.

What I basically mean is I will refrain from posting here, I will come here and check out the screenshot which'll take no longer than 15 seconds.

I'll only post when a megaton happens (when a new thread is needed).

This will help my Smash hype die off too.

The new 3D World screenshots reminded me that we'll probably get a fire Peach alt (white with red trims). They should add a fire Wario just to have a cool screenshot with 4 fire alts :p

Also I'd rather have Chibi Robo over any blond teen since he's way more iconic.

Hardly consider waluigi, ridley and lucina/chrom bottom of the barrel. Wii fit trainer and villager however...

Chibi Robot is a lot of things, but iconic isn't one of them. Unique design yes but he is nowhere near an icon.
