12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Not sure what's more impressive - the dashboard or how the number of positive posts in this thread about XBone outnumber the random trolling attempts.

Functionality looks great but the UI design itself looks a little bit ugly and cluttered.. strangely i dont feel like this for Windows 8.1, which looks great

Maybe it just needs some wallpaper

Also can you turn the text labels off?

Looks awesome.

BUT WHY is everything metro except for achievement and recording notifications? I think the metro stuff looks great. But having some notifications metro square and others rounded looks strange to me.
Exactly my "problem" with the interface of the Xbox One. Everything seems streamlined and adjusted to fit with each other, except for the Achievements/(Some)Notifications which are just out of place and don't really fit with the rest of interface.

looks pretty good, and I think this thread goes a long way to refuting the notion that neogaf has an automatic impulsive hatred of XB1. They seem to be giving credit when it's due.

No more used games? Negative response. 720p games? Negative response. Dashboard demo that looks pretty decent? Positive response. Seems fair.

If this was the type of stuff shown at E3 then you *might* have had me MS. You dicked about though.

Because it wasn't in ANY decent shape to be shown? Please tell me people don't believe Shu's video of the Ps4 UI at gamescom was actually REAL. There is no way that either Sony or MS had any decent UI until the last month...

Well, it's kind of hard to downplay. Multiple outlets are showing it as pretty much completely functional and incredibly slick looking to boot. Even as someone who has been on the anti-Kinect train, I came away for the first time actually wanting one. I see the system in a different light now, and it is really quite unique.

I can't imagine that it wouldn't given the market share.

All the Xbox One needs is your video feed from your box, the type/model of box (potentially for IR codes) and the correct guide data for your provider / location.

They want me to keep my pre-order.

Idunno. If they announced my TE arcade stick works with the One, I'd keep it. Only game I want is KI, but I'm not playing a fighter with a controller, and I'm not paying $200 for yet another stick, when I have 3 perfectly functional sticks.

I think the problem is when negative reactions come from rumors. We've been told the OS was buggy and wasn't working for example, and there was quite a bit of negativity around that.

I think that was to be expected but I didn't think it would be this much better. I can't imagine anything Sony could do, especially with their camera, that would ever be able to match this. I'm really impressed.

.

Even though I saved about $150 on my PS4 purchase yesterday I actually am having buyers remorse lol

I too had my breath held in whenever they were using voice commands. Kept waiting for t to crash. Super freaking slick though.

The quick time between dash and game is what impressed me be most.

Interesting that "Snap" wasn't shown...

But still, it looked good. The voice control stuff wasn't very impressive to me, especially when they were using it for the crappy looking guide, but the other stuff was nice. UI looked clean, a lot of good options for finding content. MS should think about making a dedicated media box.

Welcome to the future of gaming. It's really too bad that MS messed up their E3 reveal of X1. This looks like no other game system I've seen before.

Just imagine how nice it will be after it matures and gets polished up even more. It's just so attractive that it makes me want to use it. It's very inviting.

Whitten looked a little uncomfortable while facing the camera and listening to Mehdi speak, but no biggie. Superb presentation in a casual environment. Half of this stuff won't be available in my region, nonetheless the vid was a great demonstration of the OS and its capabilities.

The GAF detectives need to cool it, nitpicking the speedo wtf. Like you guys wouldn't manually pause your game first before switching to another app

oh and I thought everybody hated snapping? Saying it was useless and all...why're we so interested that it was a no-show in this vid then?

This looks fantastic (if it really all works like this)

My biggest problem is:

SHOW THIS 6 MONTHS AGO !!!!
Seriously people have been begging for explanation how the Xbox one functions and why its better etc, and now 2 weeks out you show it.
THAT is to late.

Also for all international users everything tv and entertainment related is useless.

I got uncomfortable every time Mehdi said magical.

We're just interested in snapping because supposedly it was crashing the system. Most of us figured it would be ironed out before launch, but still something to check.

If the rumors are to be believed this wasn't working even 6 weeks ago. Seems the day-one patch is required because they knew they had to get the systems distributed and would be working on the OS in the 11th hour.

Maybee... it wasn't ready? They showed a mockup, people freaked out- but the final product seems pretty close. Penello said a lot of questionable stuff, but he was right on re: the UI.

I think the reason they waited this long was because if they did a full video like this (they did show some of this at the reveal) and things shifted by the end the internetz would cry foul.

You know, assuming that was real, and that's how it will actually work, that was really very slick. It's not for me, and I'll never go MS again, but I can definitely see the appeal if you want or need all that stuff - tv, Skype, etc.

I was definitely impressed, and like others, have to scratch my head why this wasn't the initial cohesive and coherent message. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Microsoft is definitely going big or going home w/ the 'bone.

I'm mildly impressed, the zoom / pan on the Skype was pretty awesome.

Not showing, or mentioning snap is really, really weird, though.

Well, it really is not like anything we have had before. That, along with the horrible messaging early on is what, at least in part, contributed to the mess. But any kind of Kinect functionality was always going to be a hard sell to the core base. It took awhile for me personally, but I am finally 'getting it' in terms of what they are trying to do.

As much as I love Sony and what they are doing with the PS4 on the flipside, I have to admit that Microsoft took more risks and are offering features with the system that are by far more next-gen. Having all of this integrated with gaming is just ultra-nice, and like you said, unlike any system we have ever had.

Maybe given some of the rumors it just wasn't ready to show 6 months ago and it's all coming together now?

If it works as advertised this is actually really nice.

Personally I would never use half the stuff like the TV, Skype, or internet. If I had an Xbox I would only have it on during gaming sessions and that's it. I would not turn it on just to watch TV or Skype. If I want to watch a show and play at the same time, my television has picture in picture. I would use that over the snap features. If I got a call on Skype I wouldn't even answer it. ;) If I felt like answering it I would answer it on my phone. And finally if I needed to search for something online I would do that on my tablet or phone and not on a gaming device.

These are all cool features but I already have my devices of choice for each and everything MS tried to accomplish. Fun tech stuff, but not practical for me.

Maybe I missed it, but can't anyone in the room just say "xbox go home" and ruin your gaming experience?

Yeppers. They could also push the power button, unplug the xbox, stand in front of you, or shut off the power to your house to ruin your gaming experience. What's one additional way going to do?

The result is the same, you kick their ass. ;-)

Ugh, sony your move.

They don't have a move. MS is the software company and have just reminded everyone of that fact. Some shit you simply expect Microsoft to do better (or bigger and bolder) than a non-software company can, and they have (remaining bugs notwithstanding). So here we are with an extremely impressive UI and Kinect integration. There were tradeoffs involved, but it's clear that Microsoft has achieved their goal. "Good enough" NextGen gaming with enough shit to take over your living room entirely.

Suddenly the PS4 looks rather simplistic and limited.

Still on the fence about keeping the One pre-order...and more off than on it...but they've made their jack-of-all-trades box look pretty fucking good.

Is not too late, it's not like they have just 2 months to sell every console they will sell in the entire Xbox's life. For both consoles this is just the start, maybe someone would have preordered it if he/she saw this video a couple of months ago, but in the long term is not an issue, if the Xbox proves to be a worthy console then people will buy it eventually, if it doesn't people won't. Is that easy.

I'm beginning to worry and wonder how Xbox One's TV and OneGuide will handle my TiVo with only OTA programming. At least TiVo has a network command option so I'm hoping one day for some awesome integration.

Which I honestly understood to be a mock-up. Not an actual "this is ready for prime-time" demo as we got now. That video is exactly like Shu's video at gamescom of the PS4 UI.
I am surprised so many on neogaf don't understand "preview" builds, mock-ups.and lead times for software. MS and Sony are STILL crunching code at this moment with MS probably pushing through a once daily update with Sony (being one week closer) pushing an update every 8-12 hours. MS is probably still at 85-90% of "completion" with Sony at 90-95%. I honestly expect bugs at launch for both consoles since we're literally coming in hot and everyone will be dumpster-diving the OS and breaking each console's UI.

Great video for explaining the OS. I always knew this would be MS strongest point, but that is to be expected since they design OS software.

The performance looks very responsive and I really like the presentation and fuctionality. I'm personally not bothered about the whole live TV comparability, that is what app services are for in my mind.

I hope the PS4 OS depends into something similar in terms of certain multitasking functionality but so far I like its minamilistic approach. There is quite a lot going on with the Xbox One.

Also, the integration of Kinect certainly adds to it. Basic things like Skype are given additional value. I can imagine users forgetting certain terms when communicating with Kinect, little things like that.

I agree that most of it was probably staged, still it does its job as a mock-up, since it was quite faithful to the final result. Just like I'm sure Shu's video at gamescom is quite similar to what will appear on PS4.
That's why I'm slightly surprised at people being stunned by this latest video, since it only shows that MS held their promise, but we should have been expecting all of this for months.

Looked really nice. I can imagine situations where switching away from games to TV and back would be very handy. I really liked the favourites in the guide - being able to mix and match live TV channels and app channels is very neat

Pretty much this. If I were Sony I wouldn't release a similar video. I'd play up the power of the system and show off games like they've been doing because whatever they show will just be completely outclassed. And that's ok, we all knew going in that MS would likely have the better OS. I just don't think we knew it would be this much better.

It's stuff like this that is going to possibly sway people into making the trade off of worse performing games in general for the sake of an awesome UI that really does have a lot of cool features.

The software zooming and tracking was kind of amazing. I might try my elderly in-laws on Skype and see if they can figure it out.
