12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Sony better get Suspend/Resume up fast because I don't think people will put up with it for long. I think it will quickly become the expected standard.

Nice to see this video finally appear. Great to see some of the features. MS are really good at constantly updating their dashboard, so even if a few things are clunky at launch, they are bound to keep things updated.

The recording stuff is also pretty cool. Also nice that the accent colour settings you pick also appear with the Achievement and info pop-ups.

Speed of the profile login/recognition was really impressive.

The guy they call on Skype "Harry Goodwin" gets up out of his chair Riker-style.

Since Kinect can track who is holding the controller, when Marc picked up the game controller and started moving it, shouldn't the UI automatically switch back to his custom dash without him needing to say "Xbox show my stuff?" I suppose it is possible that you want to navigate someone else's content. Very cool that the Kinect can understand who said the command and load up the correct profile or content.

I know people consider this a game console, but the reality of the situation is that most people are going to be using this device most of the time for watching TV. What do people do most of the time with their TV set? Watch TV. People don't even realize how many hours a day they watch TV. The profile tracking and "one guide" are incredibly important and they need to completely nail the TV watching experience on this device. Achievements for TVs and apps is a great start, but they need a rewards program (gift cards, XBL store credit, free movies/games) to really get people using the TV stuff. They also need to get SmartGlass and apps syncing automatically with whatever TV program you are watching. Things like your Twitter app automatically displaying comments based upon whatever show you are watching, quizzes/voting, "playing along" with Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune style game shows via Kinect, make live/recorded TV interactive with or without the content providers cooperation.

Also it's still unclear to me from this and the announcements how easily apps are ported from Windows 8 (some of the apps look very familiar), but it still seems up in the air how much of Windows Store apps will make their way to Xbox One.

Overall I'd say this is fine for day one, but I'm not that impressed. They have a lot of work still to do. When they get this working with "Cortana" then they'll really get people talking.

I think you mean multi-tasking? I wasn't aware that either console would have Suspend/Resume at launch.

The public aren't going to pay $100 more for a UI.

They'll pay more for a premium entertainment device then they will a gaming device, I'd imagine. There's potentially a whole demographic that may be interested in the Xbox that won't give a damn about the PS4 because it can't do what the Xbox can. As Sony claims, they're all about the games.

Not really.

yea, actually.

Im pretty sure that Sony is making a big "move" next week. And you say simplistic like its a bad thing, when in reality, simplistic wins over complex in a consumer market 8 times out of ten.

We'll certainly see. I look forward to watching how things unfold. But this...

..this is what I expected before the consoles were announced and officially presented. I expected the One's UI and net-related features to be the selling point. It took them awhile to get it together and show it in a neat package, but here we are. Late as hell, but here we are. So now gamers that can only afford one have a real choice to make. Sacrifice the quality of your nextgen games and have all of these other features available...or have the best console gaming experience but with much less other stuff going on. Before now, it really felt like a much simpler debate. Now, not so much.

...and I'm still not keeping my One pre-order unless my 360 stick works. Fuck that shit. KI is the only exclusive I really want to have...but I'm not dropping $700 just to play it on day one. I'll wait unless my stick works like they do on the dev kits.

Brilliant OS. Microsoft did a spectacular job on this, zero doubt.

Question concerning the TV functionality. Will this work with something like ATT Uverse? I do not use a coax cable it all functions through Cat5/HDMI. I couldn't get my Sony W900A to use the TV functionality because of this either.

But with all the bad press and news that xbox had past 6+ months this could help soooo much.
And I think UI and functions of the console in general are far more inportant then you make it out to be.

Remember how the PS3 functions were in the beginning compared to xbox360/live but I know LOTS of people who bought an xbox and sticked with it this gen because of how that functioned.
Doubt it. There's nothing mindblowing here. System is perfectly functional without Kinect.
Like the guy you quoted said, no one is waiting for the UI walkthroughs to make their purchase decision. Like Microsoft themselves have said, its all about the games and PS4 has those as well but at a lower entry point. The big question here is if you are willing to pay $100 more for a weaker console with HDMI-in.

Microsoft claims its all about the games as well. But hey, lets only believe it when it comes from Sony. PS4 is a pure gaming machine!

I can confirm that Xbox One works very well with DirecTV. I have the HR34 and HR44 and it works great with both.

Major, does the Xbox One also work with HDMI receivers?

In other words, will the Xbox One know to switch my TV to input 1, and my receiver to input 2 when I say "Xbox On"?

Will it be able to mute the receiver with the IR blaster?

Edit: let my post get a little too off topic

I have a small local fiber optic company for my TV. I'm worried this stuff isn't going to work with my TV.

Microsoft has the advantage that the XBox One UI demos really well. It' easy to sell the thing using traditional TV adverts.

Gaming wise...ehhh, I think the PS4 is the more appealing device, but Microsoft is figuring their target market dwarfs the hard(er) core target market for the PS4.

It'll be a while before we know who's bet pays off in the end.

The Verge video missed about 3 voice commands. Was it accent related or fast talking error at work there?

It seemed like it had trouble with him just tacking "xbox" onto the end of whatever he was saying. It was like the console was looking for a pause before "xbox" to make sure it was actually a command and not "look at my cool xbox".

I hope they show off the snap feature more. The only video we have showing the snap feature is that random off-screen video where the guy is doing multiple things at once. It's the #1 feature that interests me the most.

I really wish Sony would stop saying stuff like that. clearly the PS4 will do a lot more then just play games. Hell the WiiU does more then just play games. In this day and age no one would except a console that literally did nothing but play games.

Edit:

Which is hardly ever.

They all seem to be on a streak of misses latey, especially CBOAT.

Very impressive. Almost makes me want to drop my PS4 pre-order and try to find a One at launch.

Have we seen any kind of compatible device list for Xbox TV yet? Hoping that Cox DVRs will be supported.

Remember that Kinect gets better at recognizing your voice and your room's ambient sounds the more you use it. It starts out (IMO) startlingly good, and after a couple of days use it gets to be REALLY good at it.

I don't know the answer to this but if it has IR remote and there are a lot of them, it's extremely likely to be supported. Cox is a big provider, so I would assume the answer is yes

According to someone who has been working with the UI for months... the video is bullshit. Not even close to those speeds.

Not that you needed a dev to tell you that video is fake. Much...

According to a second person... who saw my post. What I said is what they are seeing as well.

So that's two. If you believe me.

I do not "Believe".

I'm ignoring everything that isn't me watching something with my eyes from now on.

Heh. This is only the beginning. The reactions in here.

Just like I predicted, this system is going to massively turn things around as far as mind share is concerned. Especially in The US.

So outside of the first calibration, I take it that there is a calibration, the Kinect is "learning" to adept to your voice and the environment it is standing in? If yes, are the things that Kinect learned stored in my account so that I can use that when I log in on another Xbox One?

I think it's only stored on the local machine. Anything account specific would be considered a privacy issue I would think.

frankly, I think Sony is trying to cater to the likes of GAF because that's been working for them so far in the PR game. They're telling us what they think we want to hear. And for the most part, they're right.

But I've seen enough "hmm, will PS4 do that?" comments to wonder if this is entirely the right approach

I honestly think you are dead on about that. Best way to minimize the damage that these leaks were causing is to put out a bunch of stuff that would be shown to be false and destroy the "insiders" credibility.

leak specific false information that varies, each person gets something different and see what leaks. If one thing leaks, and the other doesn't you can trace it back to the source.

It'd be pretty smart of MS to do this if this is the case, but it is entirely possible the leakers were simply wrong.

MS is so much into the FUD business that they started spreading FUD about themselves

Tin foil hats on!
It's how you would figure out who's leaking things. Depending on what info is being reported, if you keep things limited you can narrow it down to a select few people.

But I doubt that's the case. I'm sure Microsoft has made some massive strides in the last 2 months with the system's OS and UI. My friend in the internal beta said the system has improved dramatically since he got his at the beginning of the program so I'm inclined to believe that the leaks on issues are from old unstable builds. I'll try to poke around to see if he'll tell me if Snap works.

The UI looks amazing for the Xbox One. I'm sure there will be a few gripes, but I'm curious about the PS4 UI as well. Sony has been really quiet about this. The last video I remember seeing was from Gamescom. The PS4 launch next week and I really want to what you can do with it besides gaming.

Really cool to have this walkthrough. LOVE the OS. Really fast, really smooth and very pretty. Very next-gen feeling compared to existing console OS'. The PS4 seems fast which is really the most important thing, but I definitely prefer the XBO OS based on what I've seen of both of them.

Hmm...

starting at 3:28

Albert already mentioned that in this thread. They did multiple takes because Mark/Yusef flubbed some of their lines and it was edited together. The issue wasn't because of the tech, it was because of human error. When you get your XBO it will behave exactly like they're showing though in terms of speed, etc. Nothing is faked.

Slick stuff. I still want to know if it has Audio feedback so I could just plug my reciever into the xbone and run everything on top of the interface.

It's just for bite sized recording. For both PS4 and XBone, the integrated stuff was never a reasonable replacement for modern streaming setups.

But you should at least be able to upload the full raw footage to your PC. I understand the restriction for streaming/uploading purposes but there has to be some sort of middle ground. I shouldn't have to upload 3 different 15 minute clips just to have the full one.

As in March, already have my two year subscription cards waiting to be used. Picking up a PS4 next week.
