Thor: The Dark World |OT|

Is not as big as the halfway one is just
Thor coming back to Jane's apartment as the rest just watch them making put, then we see the frost beast jumping around London chasing some pigeons

Thanks. Guess I will stay until the screen goes blank next marvel film.

I hope it hits a billion >_<

It's doing a better than Thor in the countries it has opened in so far but it is by no means anywhere near the type of numbers Iron Man 3 or Avengers did. Anything near a billion is just plain crazy talk. Thor is not that type of franchise.

Yeah it's better off aiming for MoS numbers, no way it's going to crack a billion.

Just saw it. Eh...it wasn't very good. Not horrible, but definitely on the back half of the spectrum for Marvel movies. A step down from the first movie.

+Hemsworth/Hopkins and Hemsworth/Hiddleston are great together and still fun to watch
+Art direction is much more interesting this time around
+Darcy is funny
+Ending cliffhanger was interesting
+
Captain America
cameo was really funny; someone spoiled for me that he would be appearing, but I was totally surprised by how it happened, thought it was great
+Final battle sequence was pretty inventive and unique
+End credits sequence was very slick

-Jane Foster is setting back feminism a thousand years. I didn't mind her in the first movie, but she was almost offensively bad here, between her moping-over-missing-boy to ultimate damsel in distress. And Portman is clearly wishing she was anywhere else.
-The movie is really ugly, I think it's the worst digital I've seen since Public Enemies. Bad CGI, really poor green screen, and just bad looking shots in general. One slo-mo sequence in particular stuck out like a sore thumb.
-Alan Taylor. He did fine work on Game of Thrones, but man, he was just a bad director here. There are some things you could blame on Marvel but there were a lot of basics here, from editing to ADR to shot composition, that were just handled poorly.
-Malekith. I know Marvel essentially cut out his entire character, so it's not necessarily Taylor's fault, but there's nothing to this guy. No personality, no motivation, and no idea as to what his goal is.
-They need to stop introducing so many new characters and focus on the ones they've got. For god's sake, you have Jamie Alexander and Idris Elba, use them!

It wasn't awful, but I thought it was definitely a disappointment compared to the first. Also, Marvel is fighting a losing battle if they're going to keep trying to convince me that Jane is a better choice than Sif.

Heh. Heh heh.

(This is from Charmin's actual twitter btw.)

So just came back from watching the film. It's so far my favorite Phase 2 movie. While I enjoyed Iron Man 3, (yes, I'm one of those people) I found Thor The Dark World to be a better film. A little slow at start and some questions were left unanswered but overall a good film. Also, that mid credit scene!

OT but my god the Captain America: The Winter Soldier 5 minute preview was awesome. Not gonna say much more than that other than go watch it yourself.

Jaimie Alexander is extremely hot.

Oh, and this film is pretty cool. Out of the sequel films Marvel has done so far, I think this is the best one.

That's a funny way of saying "This was better than Iron Man 2"! :P

Went into Thor with very low hype. I am getting burned out on the Marvel movies. That said I was into the movie the whole way time. It had great pacing, and spent very little time a earf. Biggest flaw is turn your brain off. The story has holes as big as twenty year old underwear.

Very good movie. Jane wasn't nearly as annoying as part 1. I thought the action scenes were all really well done except for the opening one with Thor and company which I found a bit meh. Movie is a little slow after that, but once they leave Earth it's great.

While the comedy was decent...
Every bit with Selvig was cringe worthy and stupid.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as I enjoyed the first one -- and I really, REALLY enjoyed the first one. Enough to want to rush back and see it the next day, and did so. Didn't have quite the same feeling coming out of this one. The ending battle was very creative and changed up the movie's formula for action scenes, the jokes and humor at least made me smile when it didn't make me laugh, but some of the movie just felt, I dunno... too self-aware and insincere, maybe. I was expecting more of Sif than made it into the film based on the trailers I had seen, and was disappointed to find that wasn't the case. It was refreshing to see a villain who's not "misunderstood" for a change (Malekith is evil because, surprise, he's evil), but the plot was just serviceable enough to get the job done and held few genuine surprises. The ending though, was very good and left me wanting to see what comes next. "Hail to the king."

The mid-credits scene, on the other hand, was out of nowhere and just awful. AWFUL.

Alan Taylor didn't really want a Credits Scene like that...he only planned to have the Thor/Jane scene.

So? Kenneth Branagh didn't direct Thor's post-credits scene, either. Marvel is supposed to be big on long-term shared-universe planning, and given that this scene sets up what looks to be a crucial plot point not just for GotG, but for most of the Phase 3 films leading to and including Avengers 3... there's no good reason why it should have been such a slapdash effort.

My suspicion is that there was an entirely different GotG teaser originally planned, possibly even in the can, that had to be scrapped very close to Thor's premiere date. Changes to GotG's story during production? A shift in Marvel's Phase 3 plans? Who knows.

It makes sense now why Taylor wanted so badly to make sure everyone knew he didn't shoot that scene, it looks *really* bad.

The (blurry offscreen) Comic Con footage of GOTG looked really good so I'm hoping the look of this stinger really was just because it was a rush job and not how Gunn is actually shooting the movie.

It certainly would explain Taylor's wording in that Bleeding Cool interview ("I wouldn't blame James Gunn for that" even though Gunn directed the scene).

This is how you know you shouldn't rely on Rotten Tomatoes:

Thor: The Dark World is 66% Fresh, which is the lowest for an MCU film I believe. That is just...wow.

I feel like, as a whole, reviewers have been a lot harsher on comic book movies this year than they have in the past.

Man of Steel wasn't perfect but 56% is a bit ridiculous. A lot of people didn't care for IM3's twists, but was it really only marginally better than the messy and underdeveloped IM2?

You might be onto something there. I recall a few months back one of the cast members letting it slip that he had filmed some scenes with Benicio del Toro. I'll see if I can dig that up.

Here we go: http://www.nextmovie.com/blog/benicio-del-toro-thor-2-cameo/

And that's from back in June. Maybe something changed with the GotG script between then and now and the old scene didn't fit anymore?

RT rating doesn't Man of Steel scored 56 out of 100, it means 56 out of 100 people liked it and 44 didn't. If you look at their average ratings, they're all basically within the same range - IM3 has 7/10, TDW and MoS are both at 6.2.

edit: also, superhero movies this year just flat out weren't very good. Not terribad, but more or less pretty average for the genre.

I'm aware of what it means. It's just that, in the past, as long as the movie was at least semi competently put together you could expect it to get at least a 70. Honestly the ratings are probably more in line with reality these days, it just seems like a change from what it used to be. Maybe it's just fatigue setting in and reviewers are less easily impressed by these films than they were a few years ago.

Since Loki is confirmed to not be in Avengers 2, what do you think is Marvel's plan for him?
Save him for when we need him. Don't wear a great thing out. Let us anticipate his return. Giving us too much of a great villain can diminish his greatness. Just look at certain villains in comics. Once people like Venom started showing up monthly, it got old.

Well thats beacuse like everything 90's it got past it's expiration date.

Is there a post-credits scene?

I stuck around until after the mid-credits scene.

Yes.

Jane is still moping over her cereal. Thor teleports in outside her apartment. They embrace and kiss for the happy ending. Cut to the frost giant monster that came through the portal between worlds. It is chasing after birds in London like a dog would.

.

Really? Might have been because the screen wasn't the biggest where I saw it but I thought it looked pretty damn good. Certainly one of the more impressive movies visually for the Marvel stuff and a giant leap from the first Thor.

I will agree with this. You could definitely see the money on screen with this.

I got there shortly before the movie started so I was sitting in like the third row on a pretty big screen, and the quality looked pretty good to me...but I'm not someone who usually notices CGI so I could just be blind. :P

Worst Marvel movie so far, in my opinion. Brain dead. Like they were trying to hit every trope and predictable plot point in the book.

Kat Dennings saving my ticket price, though.

So, weird experience tonight.

Me and my buddies were the first ones in the theater, and then a couple followed right after us. We sat at the very back, and they sat at the far right but still somewhat in the center. So we were just chilling when we notice this chick gets up and turns around and her pants are down. The guy grabs her ass and she starts to mount.

So we're all going WTF, because people are starting to come in. My one buddy yells "get a room" and they stop. The dude yells "fuck you guys" and makes fun of us because we were a group of all guys.

We laughed it off pretty hard and they sat back down (pants up). Guess I can add that to the checklist of weird shit that I see when I go to the movies.

A solid six. The movie had its moments. I'm getting tired of the
Loki swerves, however. They don't really make for an interesting plot mechanic and robs all gravitas from pivotal scenes he's in.

damn. sounds like another generic marvel studios property. will have to wait until guardians of the galaxy where i can get my iron man 3-like fix of above average/unique comic book films.

Wow, GAF hype let me down. Movie was kinda-garbo, straight up. Maybe the standard Marvel formula is now getting old, but it just didn't work for me, like at all.Pass on this one, save your monies or watch it in 2D at least. The 3D didn't add shit to the experience.

Really enjoyed this one. It had some pacing problems earlier on, but once
the elves attacked
things picked up. It had some very funny moments mixed in with the darker ones (the cameo was fantastic, really glad that wasn't spoiled for me). Loved the way they tied in the story into the larger MCU with the mid-credits scene. Some of the characters were underutilized (particularly Malekith), but the core interaction between Thor and Loki was fantastic; Hiddleston is easily the best casting choice Marvel has made since RDJ as Tony Stark.

Overall really fun for me. Not perfect, but worth the watch and definitely better than the first film. Kinda sad we didn't get the extended Captain America footage though, since it sounds awesome. We did get the full trailer for Days of Future Past which I hadn't seen yet, which was so good.

I really liked it, though I did think
Loki's Illusion power
was overused. My brother-in-law came along as well and the ending really confused him. Apparently he missed that
Loki kept impersonating that guard.

Anyway, I thought it was great, tons of fun. Can't wait to see it again.

This movie literally could not go two minutes without having someone make some sarcastic comment or joke, it's beyond irritating. It's the climatic final battle and you're cutting away after every punch so we can see some more inane shit from the interns. Jesus.

Also couldn't help but feel that Man of Steel has ruined fight scenes for me involving people powerful enough to punch through buildings. Thor just didn't have the same sense of weight or power that Superman and Zod conveyed.

I didn't like it. The humor was effective, and Loki was boss as usual, but otherwise, it was kind of a mess.

The villain was awful, I think that's pretty indisputable. Odin was acting very out of character. I thought Jane was okay in the last movie because their relationship came off as casual, while here it's treated as this overwhelming love when...they've known each other a total of few days. And her inclusion in the plot in general was implausible. I didn't really get any sense of character development for Thor, he just kind of quit his hold to the throne. And....that's all there was to it. It felt like a pretty empty movie.

Phase 2 of Marvel is seriously not impressing me, especially on the villain front. Here's hoping Winter Soldier can save the day.

Also couldn't help but feel that Man of Steel has ruined fight scenes for me involving people powerful enough to punch through buildings. Thor just didn't have the same sense of weight or power that Superman and Zod conveyed.

I noticed that too. Man of Steel was a failure in many ways, but damn it excelled in action.
