CNET: Xbox One won't play 3D Blu-rays -- for now

A Microsoft rep told CNET that the Xbox One doesn't support playback of 3D Blu-rays, though the company hadn't ruled out adding the feature in the future.

According to Sony's official online FAQ, the PS4 will support playback of 3D games, though none are available at launch. But the FAQ doesn't mention anything about the PS4 supporting playback of 3D movies.

It's not important to me because I won't use it for watching movies, but I wonder why they don't support it. I just hope that games no longer have to use the side-by-side method on Xbox.

Odd. I didn't actually realize that there was anything different about 3d blurays (never used one).

This is an odd feature to leave out. Is it a separate licensing fee? They've got the right HDMI standard, and the box certainly has the power to do it...

If the PS4 supports 3D games it supports 3D movies as well (once you patch in Blu-Ray playback) since it's the same signal that's sent telling the TV to render 3D.

Kind of odd, but I doubt many people will miss it. 3D is a quickly dying fad. I do wonder about 3D games tho, but even Sony seems to be giving up on those.

I can imagine that would be a desired feature for a lot of people. I know it is for me.

I love 3d blurays too. I have about 20. Pacific Rim 3d is amazing for a post conversion.

This can just be added to the coming later list for Xbox One I guess.

Am I the only one who purchased a 3d tv that has yet to use the 3d function? I feel like I got ripped off a couple hundred dollars at best buy.

Lame but they have to add that in future updates right?

Doubt it's a dealbreaker for that many people but disappointing for sure

Lets just be honest here. The PS3 and 360 of today are not the same consoles at launch. These things will be updated via firmware overtime.

This is a big deal to me. I watch a lot of 3D movies. I'm leaving my PS3 hooked up both for games, and for 3D Blurays if for some strange reason the PS4 doesn't support them.

I don't feel like this will impact many Xbox One owners, as Microsoft never embraced 3D like Sony did, so anybody that wants to watch a 3D Bluray surely already has a PS3 or Bluray player that supports 3D. It does go against the "All in one" box idea of the Xbox, though.

I don't see how. Maybe use it? If you have a PS3 then just buy a 3D blu ray or just buy a 3D blu ray player. If you have no interest in 3D not sure why you would buy it in the first place.

Uh, wow. That's really silly. I didn't even realize it was possible for a Bluray system to not play those. I learn something new every day from Microsoft.

PS Dredd is the shit in 3D you fools

Why would you build an "all in one media center for your living room" and not include 3D blu-ray playback?
