Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I hope Marth's "tip of the sword does more damage" stays, that's what made him more interesting/skilled to me

It's pretty much his trademark design aspect so I'd imagine it'd stay. I just wonder if they'd redo his hitboxes to be more Melee like (much more length, but sweetspot is necessary for KOs with up and down smash) or keep going in the Brawl direction (reduced length but has a vacuum effect, can KO from any part of the sword with the tippers being stupid stronk).

Brawl Marth's nair was my favorite button in the series thus far because of the changes to his sword hitboxes and properties on tippers.

I don't think they'd change him from Brawl. Part of Melee's characteristics, like range and more precise tip likely were there to differentiate Marth and Roy. Without Roy, or a second character using most of Marth's moveset, they don't need that anymore. I think the only way they'd change him back is if Roy returns (or if Lucina or Chrom get added as Marth clones).

Modifying my copy of Project M is pretty easy. Just like setting up MUGEN, as I state dearlier.

Gave Ganondorf a Dark Samus costume. (WIN) I won't be doing much else though like replacing PM's characters with random others. Not to say they are bad, but PM's balanced like it is and I don't want to add something that wasn't in the mix, already. As much as I want to DL those Mewtwo mods, I'ma wait for PM's to release.

What? You clearly don't have that one friend who rips everyone apart with a "bad" character. Below competitive the most important factor is how comfortable you are with a character, TIERS DON'T MATTER
I'm that guy. If I'm playing someone of equal skill to me, though, I'm going to lose if I play a low tier character and my opponent doesn't. And chances are good I'm going to perform better with a high tier character I'm not comfortable with than a low tier character that I am.

What do you think about Ice Climbers when Nana dies? Even tier deniers seem to think that Solo Popo is worse than both Popo and Nana. No amount of practice is going to make me better with Solo Popo than both Popo and Nana.

I don't want this thread to morph from speculation to rehash of old tier debates, but the mechanics of a fighting game are even more important than the included characters. I'm very supportive of Sakurai's stated design philosophy that Smash 4 will try to split the difference between the demands of the competitive and casual fanbases.

The main decisions I can gleam from the live gameplay video (uncertainty that these will remain in final game or that I've correctly interpreted game footage):
  • No wavedashing but faster rolling and ledgerolling
  • No L canceling, but global reduction of aerial endlag
  • Cannot airdodge during hitstun, but no specialfall after.
  • Low gravity reduces difficulty of recovery and makes comboing easier
These all sound like great compromises to me. I'm totally cool with removing advanced techniques if the underlying reasons that they are used are addressed (usually to speed up gameplay and reduce effectiveness of defensive/reactive play). However, I'm worried the creative combo system of the past games is going to be ruined by excessive knockback.

Someone who's good with SoPo still is going to kick his opponent's ass if the opponent isn't good with his character. Of course SoPo is weaker than Popo and Nana, but that's the effect of the character's strength being cut in half during the match. In the same vein you could ask if Jigglypuff directly after a failed rest is weaker than the normal Jigglypuff. Of course, but that's the result of the game punishing you for failing, not a matter of "tier".

Eh, solo popo is pretty bad. If the other person is comfortable and good at the game he could still win pretty easy.

SoPo clearly isn't for me. I recall always drastically underestimating the recovery move because I'm so used to how PopoNana (as the debug menu called them) would work, and I didn't even like the Ice Climbers. I could barely beat their Break The Targets stage in Melee because I would have relied so much on having Nana there!

Also, first post! Been hanging out in the IRC lately, and applied for posting about two months ago, though truthfully I found out about this site via looking up information within the Scribblenauts series of games, returned when looking for responses to the Earthbound localization announcement, and stayed for the Bayonetta 2 exclusivity reactions.

I need to decide whether I should port over one of my non-gaming avatars, or pick up a gaming avatar from here....

I'm reminded of this from an old GAF thread:

The only two reasons I like Lucario are that 1) he starred in a movie with Mew, and 2) was the closest thing Brawl had to Mewtwo. That is to say, Lucario got my approval through association with the Mew duo.

You're ignoring the purpose of tiers: what if both players are equally skilled with their characters? The person with the higher tier character has a higher likelihood of victory. This is something that can be directly quantified. If we know the difference in skill and the matchup win ratio we can calculate odds for who wins.

Btw, SoPo is fully playable as a separate character. He's allowed in low tier tournaments, and he's better than a few of the "full" characters. An asleep Jigglypuff is not a character, lol.

People don't know shit about my tip.

Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think we might get newcomers on the Dojo in a near future. I can feel it coming.

Actually, I feel that Rosalina could be a possible. I'm betting we'll see her later this month.

I think we're getting a Direct this week on Wednesday. Try to steal some of that thunder away from PS4 launch, and show off the holiday lineup (LBW, 3D World, Wii Sports, Fit, Party).

Also, Zelda
and Sheik
for Smash 4.

Bowser jr>= daisy > rosalina peach alt> rosalina.

I need mah mini bowser clone :P.
Well, my most wanted Mario newcomer would be Fawful, but my intuition tells me Rosalina will be in, and I'm never ever wrong.

Also, fuck Rosalina as an Peach alt. Every time someone talks about having an entirely different character as an alternate costume I want to go on a rampage.

Already? The latest big Direct was on October 1st, and aren't there usually one every two months?

Oh don't get me wrong. I have no problem with rosa getting in. I just don't expect her as a fifth mario rep...or ninth technically.

I seriously doubt that we will get Direct this week. I would like to but I doubt it.

Yeah, We should get one for December for 2014 titles. Mario Kart 8 and SSB4. We are getting those newcomers.

Lucina doesn't have a tipper...
