Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

Sorry but why is this a massive big deal? Microsoft have had their marketplace on the internet for years.

I may be missing something...

Edit: Though on reading, maybe it's because of deals, but still, I stand by my "hmm"

The thing is that you couldn't buy console-games digitally from any other retailer before, Microsoft and Sony essentially have had a monopoly on their digital sales (and prices) until now. This gives some much-needed competition.

In a best-case scenario, this will indeed result in console-gamers getting similar deals to what PC-gamers are used to, which makes going all-digital next-gen WAY more attractive. This is essentially how Microsoft should've approached their vision for a digital future, instead of forcing it upon people.

tl;dr: PSN turns into Steam, which is a good thing.

The only question that remains I guess is, will the game redeemed from the US PSN be playable online through the ps+ of the EU account?

Good question. We won't know for sure until PS4 is released because that is the only console with online locked behind PS+.

I really hope not

It'll be nice when companies stop treating the World Wide Web like the American Wide Web. The buy 2 get 1 free and this have both been US centric.

Not exactly, this was available in Germany too. Well the US won't get blue and red DS4 controllers and the vertical stand so... it's not completely unfair/unbalanced.

I wonder if it will be more like Green Man Gaming v Steam.

Time to see if my brother's old US address will still work. I've ordered from Amazon.com's Kindle store before so...maybe?

Yes you can. As long as there's one ps plus account on a ps4 console, any other account on that console can play online, no matter which account buy/redeem the game.

Says it's currently only to customers located in the United States and who have a U.S. billing address.

While it's a shame, I can't say this has stopped people otherwise. Considering the plethora of available VPN services, which readily enables people in Europe (for example) to purchase software and streaming services from the US, I would say this is a minor annoyance more than a problem.

May already be answered, but are Sony really giving Amazon a sort of 'wholesaler' status, where Amazon can run their own deals and discount games etc?

Really?

I see some games have slightly odd, maybe slightly lower, pricing, like 59.96 (vs 59.99 on Sony's store?) but don't know if that's a definitive indication of the above?

It's not IP-locked, just put in a US billing address.

i live in asia.

i have a local asian credit card.

i have a US PSN ID that i use to buy stuff from the PSN store on my PS3.

i tried buying the BF4 premium pass off the amazon store using my local credit card with a US shipping address.

i was able to receive the code.

TL;DR, it works for international users if you put in a US shipping address. just make sure you use the codes you get on your US PSN ID.

Alternatively use the address for Alaska's main airport. I've bought PC digital games from amazon.com using that address. There's no sales tax in Alaska apparently

Allowing other marketplaces to sell digital digital content is huge *if* this is what we think it is *and* EA etc allow digital codes to be sold for their titles.

I don't think sales tax applies on digital purchases at all. Only on physical goods. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

firebros, help me out, was this any good?

US PSN accounts are easy to make, like any other region.
I never suggested otherwhise, still an inconvenience for me so I just hope they bring this partnership to europe. Since every country here has his own PSN store I'm just afraid it might not be economically to do this for each european country.

What I love about this is the fact that hopefully Gamestop, Target, Best Buy, Toys r Us, etc. all reach similar deals with SONY. This opens up the market for a competing price platform on digital game sales. Basically Steam/GOG/GMG/Amazon tilt on PC. This should drive prices down on digital games.

This is why competition is good regardless if you hate the competing game platforms. It's obvious that the impending arrival of the Steambox has put Sony and MS on alert. They know that to not lose favor with publishers and gamers, they needed to have a healthy digital sales market to compete with Steam. Im soo happy right now

Oh snap! That actually makes a difference. US game prices are a good degree cheaper than comparative EU/UK prices.

Can confirm. Did this previously in Europe. Just be sure you use US PSN.

Technically this is indeed more like what Green Man Gaming is to Steam (since Amazon will only provide codes, it doesn't seem like they'll have their own 'store' on the PS4 similair to their Android-store for example), but people who aren't familiar with PC-gaming or the way the digital game market works on PC probably don't know GMG or similar digital shops that well. ;)

Would Origin effect that at all?

Not unless the PS4 plays PC games , or Sony starts to allow Uni and EA to sell digital content on their marketplaces for use on PS4.

This Amazon thing is pretty useless unless we are going to be able to go to Amazon and choose between physical or a code for redemption on PSN. We still don't know if the later will be possible.

Well this isn't something new to me.

GAME have it for PSN:
http://www.game.co.uk/en/games/playstation-network/?cm_sp=topnav-_-PS3-_-PSNLogo

For Xbox Live:
http://www.game.co.uk/en/games/xbox-live/?cm_sp=topnav-_-x360-_-XboxLiveLogo

And Nintendo's eShop:
http://www.game.co.uk/en/games/nintendo-eshop/?cm_sp=topnav-_-Wiiu-_-eShopLogo

All at discounted prices compared to direct from the marketplaces. Deals on the odd occasion (they had one where if you prebuy the download of Pokémon X & Y, you got the download of Pokédex 3D Pro) and so forth.

Have to say I'm surprised if this is the first time the US has anything like it.

The shitty thing about those PSN codes is that they only work on UK accounts. You can't redeem them on any other EU account.

Earlier in the thread someone said that Twisted metal was cheaper on Amazon than PSN so I suppose so!

For us Europeans it's all discounted anyway! A brand new $60 release will cost us €45!

Wut? Is this real life? Sony allowing competition on their consoles?

I mean, it's amazing for us and all but this doesn't make sense business wise.

So, this deal will ensure quicker downloads of digital games because they are downloading from Amazon's servers? The digital downloads would no longer be limited by PSN I assume.

Please come to the UK. Please. Current digital prices for "AAA" games are ridiculous, hopefully Amazon will reduce them a bit.
