Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

Potentially could be pretty cool, but it seems pretty limited right now. Only 60 PS3 games up, mainly PSN titles it seems like.

It also seems like you still have to input the code manually in order to add the game to your library.

Why would it be any different anyway ?

Sony changing the rules and actually making me excited for a digital future. Their executives are on a roll -- this really could be another PS2!

This is pretty damn huge. Especially if they add more storefronts.

This is how it works on PC, including for Steam and Origin games. Its why PC game prices are as competitive as they are. Which has led to PC games having an extremely long "shelf" life.

This isn't quite the same as PC though. Amazon has done this before for PSN and the prices did not vary too much from what was already on the store itself.

PC Digital thrives because PC Digital IS the market. Physical releases are now the niche (in the US anyway). PC is not bound by retailers getting pissed off and is a truly open market.

I hope this does lead to some interesting deals though but even if buying through Amazon nets you credit on your Amazon account to use toward purchases, that's good too.

This is awesome news.

Hopefully it will mean not losing out on Amazon physical pre-order exclusives. Not to mention credit promos.

This is really awesome. I could see myself buying some titles I'm really not interested in if they're in impulse buy price range, ala Steam.

Couldn't you already buy PSN game codes from Amazon? What's changed here exactly?

you used to be able to buy a very limited selection of titles as PSN codes from Amazon. They eventually stopped.

This now looks to be a significantly greater selection, and from indications now changes how codes are distributed to begin with (i.e. these codes have nothing to do with Sony aside from activating on PSN). This should mean entirely independent pricing and sales.

edit - the one downside I see to this (very minor though) is that eventually a title will probably go out of stock on Amazon. It also might mean that in extreme cases (crazy popular new release) those could go out of stock as well (at least temporarily). Will also be interesting to see if Sony allows pre-orders or keeps that exclusive to PSN (along with the respective pre-loads)

Just so you guys are aware, the $5 credit is for the AMAZON PSN only. You won't just be able to use it with any other PSN money + this $5 credit. Its still money, but just thought it should be cleared up.

Take my money. All of it.

Yeah but you can use the $5 Amazon credit on a $10 PSN code, correct?

Question: How is this a new thing?

Amazon sold PSN content a couple of years ago and then they stopped doing it. Are they saying that they are going to discount the PSN version at the same time that they do it with the retail version? If not, then I don't see it as that big of a deal.

it looks like it might be possible. It's an Amazon PSN credit, but yeah cards are showing up on the Amazon PSN store.

Codes there were just an alternate extension of the existing PSN. Very seldom did new/current codes go for any less than retail.

If you look around already, there are plenty of codes matched with Amazon's current physical price, and well as codes matched with the current PSN sale price (non-Plus).

So basically it looks like yes, Amazon is being VERY competitive with this. Likely having to do with that these codes are entirely independent from Sony's PSN store (aside from activating there)

I see Black Ops 2 selling for $60 while the physical version sells for $40.

I'll remain skeptical for now.

They say on the site you can't use it for that. It's still 5 dollars for use on amazon's store though, so not as good a deal as it seems, but still worth getting if you're already buying the games.

"This credit must be used by 12/31/2014 (and cannot be used on Amazon.com Gift Cards or PlayStation Network Gift Cards)"

Brilliant news. Competition, one of the key things that keeps Steam honest (well, that and Gabe, it would seem). Openness on a closed platform. Sony are full of Win right now.

But will they match PS+ discounts on the PSN Store? Now that most people will become PS+ members going forward, that kind of needs to happen.

So then, with the onset of digital games libraries, this Amazon news is a pretty huge deal. Suddenly, digital gaming on consoles (well, Playstation), is opened up.

A new dawn.

freaking awesome, let there be lots of discounts!
and yeah it is totally easy to buy digital at amazon.com without being in the US
