Bravely Default Demo Out Now on European E-Shop

The 1st Boss is weak to
Wind. But Aero is a Level 2 White spell. I really should have levelled White Mage to 2 on my Black Mage.
Seriously messed me up.

The equipment is a bit hard to get a grasp of , e.g. with a B rank in Armor sometimes robes are better (at similar cost) , sometimes armor is, with an A or S rank the actual Armor is always better.

Doesn't seem to be any disadvantage for equipping something even if you're rank is E though, so equipping a Shield is always a good idea unless you're dual-wielding/two-handed. Unless there's a hidden penalty that I'm not seeing.

I believe the stats go down if you aren't suited to the armour/weapon, although sometimes even with the penalty you can still end up better off.

Yeah, if you have an A with Shields you get more from a given shield than if you have an E , but even if you have an E equipping a Shield seems to be better than leaving the hand empty (at least as far as I can tell).

First boss:
I had Aero but I didn't think that a monster that uses wind attacks was weak against them.

I love the encounter rate slider but I don't know if I should feel bad for having it at -100% while returning from a dungeon.

Well, this was incredibly disappointing. Enough to cancel my preorder I think.

It feels too old-school to me. Not what I was hoping for at all. Presentation is really bad too. Seems like it's only slightly above a standard DS game.

The music is glorious though at least. I think I'm going to buy the OST.

I'll admit I wasn't able to play long this morning and I can easily see how the game is pandering to the 'old school' nature of JRPG's, yet I was amazed by the visuals. Also the 3D effect was brilliant.

Yea its definitely old school, I wasn't a big fan of the bravely default system to start off with it makes the game more like an SRPG than a standard JRPG in a sense, its definitely something you have to get used to.

Loving the system to rebuild the village though, shame its so heavily dependant on streepass, best set up a virtual streepass for this one I think.

What do you mean about the "presentation". It's one of the prettiest game on the 3ds. I was mind blowed by the graphics in the demo even more when you come from a game like pokemon.

*Comes back after playing demo for a while*
*Sees Dantis hates the game*
*Knows Dantis well enough*
Alright then =P

In the full game you can use internet friend IIRC

The whole point is to make a modern "old school game", I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Also, the presentation is fucking beautiful.

Destroyed the first boss! Then I realized that I was on easy, boo me. :'(
Loving it so far, in the full game it'll be hard mode all the way!

This reminds me how much I hate status effects in traditional JRPGs. Getting blinded by a trap in a dungeon and having to backtrack all the way back to town to rest at an inn is rage inducing. Especially since it's almost impossible to run from battles and takes ages to kill enemies in encounters thanks to blind.

I'm about to rage quit because these Kobolds are fucking horrible. All my physical attackers paralysed and my magic users silenced, seriously?

Why is this first cave so difficult? Granted, most of it is because I get hit with a shit load of status ailments every first turn, but I just got to the boss room and had to turn around to go heal at the inn ALL the way back at town. It's just annoying :/

Man, I disagree with this so much. It's so incredible how the backgrounds look like hand drawn 2D backdrops and then they pop into three dimensions in 3D mode. And the backgrounds are beautiful too.

New annoyance: Deathstalkers. They keep summoning more of them and they have insane amounts of HP. This fight will never end at this rate.

Thanks! I'm so happy. This is a lovely game with a great job system so far. Also, the customisable difficulty is neat. This reminds me of old school FF.

In 3 months...yep, I can hold for that long.

Do we know how much is the US Collector's Edition?
You'll want this thread:
Bravely Default CE announced for North America - February 7th
Most likely will be updated with the prices when they are put up on sites.

;D There's a reason, part of my OT:

What level were people when they went through the forest missions? I'm level 7 but it just feels like random encounters are such a struggle to get through. Am I just playing wrong? :/

How does the game balance out with player-adjustable random encounter rates? I guess it's up to the player to know that he's underleveled and turn it up accordingly?

Thank you. That was nice to read! So, what game was FF Heroes of Light? Was that the very first FF? I think I'll treat this game as the spiritual sequel to FF.

Nah that wasn't the first FF lol, it was a DS game check here: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy:_The_4_Heroes_of_Light

Haven't got there yet, but just to make sure you did buy the spells etc in the town right? Buying spells and items would help. Atm I'm trying to level up job levels so I can place spells into my ability slot so I can cast level 3 spells like thundra etc. You are equipping your people with S/A weapons and equip as well right?

Kinda that and in the main game you can borrow a friend's job level etc to help you out or you can summon them to do an attack at the enemy for you. So if I was a friend with you I could put a summon spell that's waaay later in the game for you to use against enemies.

Sure am, at least when I can. How can I use level 3 spells? I'm a level 3 black mage and have bought the Fira spell but can't use it in battle. Wish they'd explain all this a bit better. Same story with my level 3 white mage, she can't use Esuna despite it being a level 3 spell as far as I can tell.

If it helps any, I found the demo to be significantly harder than where the main game starts.

The difficulty curve is much more gentle in the actual game. Either that or I was just much better acclimated with the B/D system by the time I bought it.

Also, I can believe maybe not digging the game due to its retro stylings, but saying the presentation is bad? I can't even begin to wrap my head around that one. It's one of the most beautiful games on the system, IMO.

Games like this make me really hate the region lock on 3DS. It's going to be painful waiting two months to play it after seeing EuroGAF talk about it.

Ah wait it goes up to level 2 for black magic for me, I'm guessing black mages need to have higher job levels. Also the game does explain things if you go back to the intro area, the guy re-explains everything.

Did I guess correctly that to use level 3 magics the black mage job level needs to be higher than 3? Or are we missing something?

Is it me or am i the only one that doesn't really see the benefit of using 4 actions in 1 turn.
This just increases the buttons to press to finally make a move, and this with 4 characters.

I know that it suppose to make more sense in the full game, i think.
But can anyone explain ?

The way I see it what if you have 1hp, enemy has 3hp, you saved up your hits so you can kill enemy with 3x 1dmg before it hits you with 1dmg.

1) speed up trash mob fights

2) add some depth to boss fights. Your healers can Default to double up on healing, you could charge 3 BPs then run buffs that last 2 "turns" to do 4x buffed attacks twice in a row, monsters Brave and Default as well meaning there's some pattern reading to the fights as well.

.

Took Tiz and Ringabel both through the Knight and Valkyrie job paths a bit to get them both to have Jump, Crescent Moon and Two-Handed. Now they're destroying stuff left right and centre which is nice.

Finally remembering how much I loved the job system of old FFs. So rewarding to master and switch between jobs.

Edit: Just destroyed the second boss after getting a hang of the combat system. Had my Knight and Valkyrie both jumping every other turn, Performer was singing to boost the party's BP and P.Atk every other turn and then curing with Cura others (Already had her master White Mage beforehand). Meanwhile my Red Mage who had already gone through Black Mage was casting Blizzara whenever he didn't have Reflect up. Good stuff, it wasn't too easy that I could just hack away but I felt like he wasn't out of my league either.

I notice there's a tower to the south of town, how do I activate the quest there? After handing in the second boss quest no other exclamation marks have appeared in town.

Edit: Found it. Holy shit, that Minotaur. Did heaps of damage to him but got wiped out because both my mages ran out of MP :/

I thought it would be a modern take on a classic JRPG. It's much closer to like the FF3 and FF4 remakes.

I mean, isn't that because that's what it is? 2D paintings on a 3D plane? The 3D effect is good, but other than that, I don't like it. I really dislike how the battles are smushed onto one screen as well (I guess to try and look like the old Final Fantasy games?) rather than the kind of camera that JRPGs started using in like 1997.

You need level 4/max to use level 3 spells.

Played 7 hours and not done yet, one of the best demos ever.

Argh, why can't I play the AR movie? Is it that is too dark in my room for the 3DS camera?
Highly frustrating!

Also, everyone playing this on a 2DS is missing out on some wonderful 3D pop-out backgrounds.

I thought it would be a modern take on a classic JRPG. It's much closer to like the FF3 and FF4 remakes.

That's the point, all those games are remakes. This is one of the true modern oldschool games that has been done from scratch, and it tries it's best to be strategic and fast
paced from what I've seen. I can't wait to mess with the battle system for hours.

I think there's no other way to define this game than as a modern take on a classic JRPG, haha. It's fine if you don't like it, but it's what it is, and damn it looks amazing compared to any Final Fantasy game since forever.

I thought it would be a modern take on a classic JRPG.

You mean like a game that layers classic tropes into a framework of modern conveniences like adjustable encounter rate, speedup mechanics, rich information presentation, and approachable UI? I'm not really sure what you were looking for if this doesn't match your definition....
