Killer Instinct | Review Thread

Reading that Edge review earlier, I was genuinely shocked the score at the end was as high as a 7. The actual review was pretty harsh. I've seen them be kinder to many games that they've scored lower at the end :/

So you're saying $60 for 24 characters/stages isn't a good deal?
And its 8, not 6.

No, it's not, if you have to wait for them because it fragments the community - there's not enough variety to build up a strong base.

Super Street Fighter Ultra will have 44 characters for $39.00. Heck, Aquapazza comes out this week for $29.99 and has 13 characters all available from the start (plus 13 partners) - and I get the physical media.

Not trying to troll or anything but couldn't they just make a complete game? What's with releasing such a no-frills package? I couldn't imagine playing a fighter like this in this day and age. What the hell?

Do you like season passes? Because that's what it sounds like to me.

That's because that is exactly what it is.

Still, the math holds up favourably when compared to a $60 game in value. We aren't being taken to the cleaners in any way. 8 characters for $20 is fair value.

Mind you, I am a die hard KI fan who will be buying the $40 version every time.

And to above post... theres no fragmentation. When round two comes out, update comes out and everyone can play against the new characters. Its all one game.

Super Street Fighter Ultra will have 44 characters for $39.00.

This is hardly a fair comparison - Street Fighter IV came out nearly 5 years ago with 25 characters for $60. 4 of the 5 characters added to Ultra are copy pastas from SFxT.

First of all, Street Fighter 4 vanilla was $60 for 19 25 (my bad, was looking at the arcade release) characters. Second, fragmentation is only a problem in other fighters because they create entirely new SKUs when they get new characters. All future KI characters will be playable from this one SKU. You'll still be able to fight characters you don't own so there's no fragmentation.

Hope there will be a "fuller" game once I get my Xbox One in a year or so. This is pretty much the only game I'm interested in so far on the platform.

sf4? a 4 years old game? with lots of rereleases? please.

The scores look about right to me. Having seen tons of vids on the game, and demoed it myself it always felt like a solid 7, nothing more and nothing less.

After playing this over the weekend, the reviews are more than justified. Most fun I've had with a next gen game (played killzone, knack, NBA 2K14, Forza 5).

In a year, you'll be looking at 16 characters, full story modes for everyone and enders (likely)

Plus a lot more features... I am hoping they expand the training for fighting against every character... would be incredible stuff and truly set them so far ahead of every other game out there.

They only had just over a year to develop this game, so it's pretty understandable that it isn't heavy on content.

And also... small team.

Less cooks in the kitchen can lead to a better balanced game and a more unified direction.

And less than 14 of those characters will be used. Quality > Quantity every time.
Bingo. I like options but let's be real. Most of the time at least a third of the cast isn't viable. Hopefully less characters plus DH emphasizing the teaching of fundamentals equates to a better experience for new players.

Sorry, but those scores do not reflect how bare-bones the content is.

Especially given some of the complaints regarding Resogun's content, which is from what I've read a far more complete and substantial experience, I can't help but feel that its being treated conspicuously gently.

Of course, makes me smh.

I don't particularly care for any of the accessories enough to spend extra money so the deciding factor on whether I go for the ultra edition is the classic costumes and we have yet to see even a hint of them :(

Well I have been vocal about the stupidly slim character offerings and barebones release, and even with the known-of additions coming, it's going to be a quite tiny game. But it sounds like what is there is fun and plays really solidly, which is important. At least they got that sorted.

I'm willing to give it a chance. I'm not planning to buy an Xbox One, but if I ever do pick one up I'll definitely get it, and probably by then the game will have been really filled out with content.

Good to hear that the series is back! Partly.

No, because people that want to update their prior purchases can do so digitally.

And, again, with the original SF4, you got more characters all at once and a physical copy for the same price. The only reason I chose the upcoming release is because it's an upcoming release. I could have looked at pretty much any fighting game release and it would be a better value than this piecemeal thing.

That's because it is. The X1 games in general will be treated much more "gently". I'm not surprised at all.

stop this nonsense. Vanilla sf4 didnt even have fucking lobbies for 60 dollars. It was a fucking joke.
If you rate value only with roster , then go play your precious Capcom games, Ki is not for you.

Value is subjective but besides that, the depth of fighting games comes from mastering the ins and outs of characters and then mastering the match ups with every other character. The fact is, you're probably not going to do that sufficiently with every character in a week. Probably not in a few months even and by then another character comes out. Then another in another month.

While I don't disagree, it is disappointing in comparison to even older fighting games like SF2 which had 8 characters from the start.

EDIT: That being said, I look forward to it and plan on getting it.

That wasn't an option for SS4. That wasn't an option for UMvC3. That's not the case for most fighting game updates. That's beyond the point though which is that KI will not be fragmented.

Calamity Trigger was 69$ for 10 Characters in 2008
Continuum Shift was 69$ for 13 Characters in 2009

but i don't even know why i care giving a f

Other games like SF2... which had a MSRP of $70

I'd honestly rather them price it at $60 and delay the game until it has enough characters + features, but I'm probably in the minority. It's just disappointing they had to rush it for the launch period.

Averaging out to a low 7 so far... just about what I expected from Double Helix.

The scores aren't indicative of the quality of the game, just the content.

The quality is top notch. Game is like crack.

Think of it like this

The game comes out in two years... for 3 separate payments of $20 you can play the game as it is being made, and make suggestions and take part in a community effort to determine how the game will be when it is done.

I'd rather play now than wait 2 years.

You mean the same Resogun that is currently the highest rated new exclusive on the PS4? That Resogun?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have more characters to mess around with at the start. But the reality is that that's about all I could do with any of them save maybe a couple in a week's time. The value for me is in learning the characters. That will take a LOT of play time and I'd say $20 is a fair price for a couple of months of play time. If your personal value only comes from the Story Mode (remember there is also a Survival mode at launch) then no, this wont be worth the money until it's updated.

It sounds like they did the opposite of rushing. each character got such TLC, the roster is very diverse.

rushing would be if they DID have 16 characters at launch and they all played the same or were horribly unbalanced

I don't get how your reply is relevant to the point he was making?

This game is one that hurts me most, missing out on an xbone over.

I loved K.I. back in the day (I wasn't any good, I would just scrub it up with tj combo, and orchid, with their ezmode combos).

But $500 just for K.I. right now...can't justify it, already cancelled my ps4 preorder, and am waiting on a tasty non reference ati 290 card to come out.....

I need more monies....

Also I kinda wish it was a full featured $60 release with all the stuff in it, I mean if it gets there great, but....K.I. deserves more than this (and I hope they get it).

Please outsource more Rare IPs.

Jet Force Gemini to Platinum, plz.

Once the rest of the add-ons are actually finished, this could even be one of the best titles in fighting games.

Wow. It's a shame MS didn't get started on this game earlier, because it's only the lack of features hurting the scores.

Where was BlazBlue ever that expensive? The release prices I had seen were $60 and $40.

I've never understood this.

The devs had two options:

1. Release a solid game early which is light on content but for a low price. They then add content later on through updates.

Or...

2. Delay the game and release a solid game which is heavy on content for a larger price.

Assuming it takes the same amount of time to develop the content, with option 2 we get a full game but at a later date. With option 1 we get a full game but at a later date, however we get to play it early with less content.
