Killer Instinct | Review Thread

Reading the reviews there seems to be a consensus that it's an awesome fighter, the complaints being leveled at it are down to it's lack of content. Not sure I can agree there as it's priced accordingly, but you can't really expect reviewers to take into account value for money when everything is free to them anyway.

Not sure why people are having problems playing the game online. There was a media "play date" on Saturday afternoon and I've had no problem finding players online all weekend. There aren't a lot of people on, but there's enough to get in quite a few matches, especially during peak hours.

I really recommend USgamers review. It was done by DrDogg. It's not some random videogame journalist who does not understand fighting games.

Thank you sir!

I can also answer any questions you guys have now that the embargo is lifted. GAF seems to be having server issues at the moment, but I'll be checking here and the OT throughout the day.

I've never understood this.

The devs had two options:

1. Release a solid game early which is light on content but for a low price. They then add content later on through updates.

Or...

2. Delay the game and release a solid game which is heavy on content for a larger price.

Assuming it takes the same amount of time to develop the content, with option 2 we get a full game but at a later date. With option 1 we get a full game but at a later date, however we get to play it early with less content.

"Content" is too coarse of a word for games, because it makes it sound like games are simply the sum of their parts, and ignores the interactions between the parts. Would you like the option to play the game if it only had one character? What if that character only had one move? What if it only had stages and music, and characters would get patched in later? The point is that what you're really playing with option 1 is not the same game as option 2 but with "less content"; what you're playing is a different, worse game.

8 characters sounds like way too few to me. It sounds like a demo, although sometimes demos can be so good you play the shit out of them anyway (I have fond memories of the Unreal Tournament demo), and honestly the videos of this game look awesome. This should really get reviewed again when there are more characters.

What were those 2 problems you couldn't mention in the other thread? I haven't read your review yet so I apologize if it was answered there.

No online lobbies (only 1v1), and how the unlocking system is done (takes quite a while to unlock most of the stuff).

I think lobbies will be in shortly after launch (hopefully)
one of the builds they are lugging around has a lobby option in the Xbox live area but its disabled like its a placeholder/work in progress

Pretty generous reviews considering the anemic amount of content at launch. Kinda tricky when it's free to play.

On one hand, there's an extreme amount of value packed into the content that is there for that price, on the other hand, there isn't much content in total.

I wonder how it will do in the FGC.

system exclusive on a more expensive system where you most liekly have to buy a new stick.

While GGXrd will be a PS4 exclusive, and its up to the game dev to require a new stick or not.

The FGC is broke so no way are people getting two anytime soon.

I just read some of these reviews and I can't see how most of these are valid.

The IGN review for example makes NO MENTION of online play leading me to believe that they haven't actually played the game online. No mention of netcode or online features. Hell there is barely even mention of offline multiplayer against people outside their inner circle.

With the only mode available without online being a survival mode and training mode... how are the reviews even valid? The entire basis of making the review is on the strength of that one training mode which is ludicrous. They don't even have the slightest clue as to how playable the game is in real fighting game conditions, it's all training mode bull shit.

Bear in mind this is no fault/jab at KI or Double Helix this is more a comment on the lack of professional integrity when it comes to reviewing a product. The reviews sound more like previews explaining how the combat system works which is a disservice to the player base. I know fighting game reviews don't even matter much but this is still a joke.

With this and Strider, Double Helix is prone to make a massive 180 in terms of quality me thinks.

Hopefully Microsoft is so happy with KI that they decide to buy them...

Really hope this gets picked up for EVO. This looks like a nice and hype middleground between SF4 and UMvsC3, and the main reason I want an Xbone. I'll wait till there is word on the online MP to consider it though. I don't have local battle access.

You can't use a 360 stick?

I think its safe to say netcode for fighters will continue to be ass unless its either an ASW or Namco fighter. GGPO games are the exception.

Reviewers will always say its "playable". Playable for casuals who don't give to shits outside rolling their face on the buttons. I remember people saying MK9 netcode was playable.

Yeah fuck those people.

You can't use a 360 stick?

Not for KI iirc. I'm almost positive you have to buy a new stick. CDjr and markman were talking about it the other day

It'll definitely be there for EVO 2k14, since it's sponsored by Microsoft.
The question is, will it be at EVO 2k15? I hope so. EVO has always been primarily a Capcom tourney, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if KI falls by the wayside. Just needs a strong install base to keep that from happening.

Wonder if this does well enough, MS will consider buying them out to do other Rare games, or maybe make them the Killer Instinct Team? Cant hurt having a 1st party exclusive fighter.

I think it will just come down to the players and the hype it generates. If its fun to watch on stream (which it certainly looks to be), I think it will have legs.

If mk9 managed to be 2 years in a row(or maybe 3?) at evo, this can too.

I'll wait for actual fighting game players to give their impressions. I want this to be good though since watching streams has gotten pretty dull for me lately. However, I think we've largely seen that most games reviewers are a joke when it comes to the FGC. Adam Sessler at evo made me cringe

You do know why MK9 managed to stay for 3 years right? Its not because of the game quality, I can tell you that. Almost all the top players if not all of them know MK9 isn't a good fighter compared to the others but it was the community that kept it strong.

The mk community is really loyal and big. I mean they had tournament for all their shitty 3d fighters and still continue to host umk3 tournies on the side.

I don't know how KI will do but if it doesn't catch on like wildfire within the first few months it will die out.

at least this is a good fighter, gameplay wise.
Only thing I know, lots of american pro players are going to play this and if the game is hype at tourneys, people will keep playing it.

Xrd is also coming out on PS3

Read the USGamer review to get started.

this 110%. totally agree. with everything that DH have done right with this game, they should be firmly in microsofts sights.

get them to do season 2, stop the seasonal stuff, then knuckle down on the real next gen ki for a 2016 release..

if someone from microsoft is reading this.... then please do it.

I think the Tutorial is the most interesting part of the game. If it can tutorialize the complex aspects of fighters, this "free to play" game could be a gateway into better fighting games ecosystem.
I'm definitely excited. I hope I'm not let down but most of the videos I've watched just look fun. I expect to get my ass handed to me.

I'm really liking the look of this.
As someone that has only ever really flirted with fighting games in the past (and been pretty bad at them), this sounds like the perfect fighter for me to try and master.

No. Keep building upon the same platform. I think the worse thing they could do would be to make KI4. Just keep adding onto of the current game. Doesn't split the userbase.

i agree and i dont agree. i want them to update the engine and get this baby running full HD. i get the feeling that they wont go back and retweek the first season, and will never push the engine to its fullest with season thingy.

still i could be wrong, and we could get the message telling us to redownload season 1 because they have done just that.

i also think that more importantly, they will expand upon the characters repetoires if they do a full game from a - z with a lengthy dev cycle

They can do all that now though with the digital release though. They'd be just as likely to do it that way as they would with a full disc release at least. For example, they have already talked about adding No Mercies sometime down the line. I think that's a lot of the type of stuff you'll see in between seasons.

true, and i didn't even think of that.

you have gotta hand it to DH, it looks like they have done some great work on this.. and looks like they have found their calling!

i cant believe how hyped i am for a fighting game. seeing as i aint bought one since launch day on the ps2

We don't know that. Way to early to tell if its a good fighter yet. We have no idea how balance is (remember how kabal and cyrax went? and people said KL was broken as shit and were only half right?) We don't if there are any bugs that are hardcoded into the game that can't be patched out (input bug, meter draining bug, p1 advantage) and such.

Remember how people thought SFxT was an ass game competitively when it came out? Why is it considered the best fighter to play by a lot of the top fighting game players.

Well SFxT was universally acclaimed by all the top players (the infamous Mike Ross comment) before the game's release then panned by everyone after which it got a substantial patch update that fixed a lot of issues and now players like it again.

This! I couldn't agree more. If they want to make another KI, have them do it when the next console is coming out. Use this entire lifespan to build upon this game. I think this will do well and season 2 is all but confirmed. I really hope it continues to do well though and we see a season 3, 4, and 5. It would be great to still be playing this game 4 or 5 years from now.

eh, that mike orss comment was a beta build. Top players like playing it even in vanilla though, its just that the majority hated watching it being played. Its a cvs2 type game and those games are a snoozefest when it comes to spectating.

edit
But thats all OT. hopefully KI grows a community similar to MK.

Pleased to see you bring all this up, I was pleasantly surprised at the scores but I didn't have time to read the meat of them. Glad I didn't bother.

On a broader scale, what you spell out here touches on what I dislike about most reviews nowadays. It's like having a car review that stops with, "Yeah it goes fast, you can reach 100 miles an hour eventually if you really feel like, steering wheel works like it's supposed to, and you can rest assured it comes in red. For those who don't like sweating, air conditioning is standard. Looks nice with a girl on it. 8/10" Good analysis of systems and their functionality and even fundamental things like control schemes seem underrepresented in most reviews, unless I'm looking in all the wrong places.

That said, I'm waaaaay out of the loop for tournament play and I don't want to sound like I'm pretending I am, so this realistically might be good enough for me to fool with whenever I get an Xbone.

The reviews so far seem fair aside from the lack of online impressions. Hope the netcode is ace. The game obviously would've scored higher if it weren't for the lack of content, which will be added over time. I'm fine with that.

Pretty good scores for a game severely lacking in content. It's not like I really wanted it to score less, I'm glad that its competent gameplay wise but fighting games all tend to score in this range anyway, the score doesn't really tell the story.
