Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I know this was brought up a crocodile mile ago. But...

Rool has been officially redesigned multiple times now. People should stop pretending that he wouldn't work in Smash just because they don't like the original Rare design.

I want him in this game so bad, really should have been in the original.

In the original Smash LOL okay if you're going to give any franchises 2 characters in the original Smash it has to be Mario then Pokemon. There is no way you're going to give a second slot to the Donkey Kong franchise, and even if you were Diddy would make far more sense as he had just started in his own game Diddy Kong Racing.

Okay, I gotta admit that looks way better than his early artwork I was complaining about.

Speaking of Nintendoland, does anyone think a Mii moveset based on it might be cool? The Miis could use the costumes they use in the game and those abilities.

Ok, at least Melee.

The original needed more villians

I've heard elsewhere there were up to as much as 5 characters excluded, so that's why I said several. But yeah, at least three, lol.
Yeah, there are some faultier sources claiming more, but the only reputable one is directly from Sakurai's mouth on the original SSB64's japanese website that stated Bowser, Dedede, and Mewtwo were all originally considered.

I still see a Wii Sports/Resort move set being better. Smash can be the opponent turned into a sandbag and you KOing it.

If Dedede was considered for 64, I wonder why it took until Brawl to get him in as a playable character. I'm guessing not enough time to develop him in Melee, but I would have expected him to get higher priority. Ah well.

I could see it, but I also see a Mii moveset being tennis racket, bowling ball, boxing gloves, etc.

Is there any reason why Sakurai didn't confirm the team size?

That is a nice article, very interesting. Thanks for sharing,

It looks like Sakurai is doing the majority of the balancing again? On top of having all his other task, amazing but I understand how it can be way easier for him to test and implement such an important part of the game than to try to explain it to someone and have a chance of miscommunication.. Sakurai don't kill yourself man, at least you're enjoying your breaks playing Smash.

Very interesting. I praise Sakurai's commitment and that comment about "more fun than Melee and Brawl" gives me some hope, heh.

Same as every night: reasonable.

But not as fun as the first? No hope. This game is dead!

So that means.. Hype up tonights picture!

He didn't say who was working on Brawl until after that was released either. Besides the staff at Namco Bandai, he probably has a bunch of people from the Kid Icarus team working on the game as well as outsource work being handled by Monolith Soft. I'd peg the full-time staff at around 100 people (like Brawl). That's my educated guess, anyway.

Also, one of the quotes in that article reminded me of something...

Masahiro Sakurai said:
Losing time in the commute or being beholden to whenever the last train of the night departs is out of the question. So I moved here temporarily until development is complete.

Masahiro Sakurai said:
And, since I can't be a slave to the last train of the night, I decided to move to that area too.

The interesting thing there is that Villager seems to have a couple of those moves. Not sure what that means for Mii's chances.

Good point. Maybe throw in some Wii Sports Resort stuff like the lightsaber thing, a jetski, etc. There's a ton they could do I suppose.

Yeah, a glider or rocket belt from Pilotwings would make a good recovery move for one. Jet Ski would be cool just so you could use a Ryota Hayami Mii with it.

Soo.....did anyone also know that today in 2001 is when Super Smash Bros Melee came out in Japan? That may be also something to consider.

Great article. Kevin Gifford is the man.

However...

"At this point," he said, "the new Smash Bros. is fun, more so than Melee or Brawl. However, we have to work to keep things dynamic and not over-fine-tune the balance. If we aim for complete fairness, there won't be any personality to it. By the way, I almost always win in these battles. I'm no wimp at this by now, apparently."

In the afternoon, it's back to supervision work...but besides that, Sakurai has another important design assignment. "In all previous Smash Bros. games," he explained, "I've entered in all the data for fighter skills and hitboxes by myself, and it's quite nearly that way with this game too. I've thought about leaving this work to others and I've actually tried it once or twice, but it hasn't worked out. I don't want to release an incomplete game, and I want everything to be as successful as possible, but it results in a massive amount of work for me. It's a big problem, but there are reasons for doing it this way."

This scares me. It didn't work for Brawl.

Also, dude needs to chill out. Have we heard anything about his hand pain? How is he going to heal if he's stressing himself out like this, working 12 hours days?

Not a bad guess. I hope the team is larger than that though. Would it be safe to assume that HAL may be assisting with the development as well?

And what was that in the article about him handling balancing? I thought he said earlier that he wasn't doing all that by his lonesome this time?

Tomorrow's the Japanese anniversary of A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Melee. If we're getting a character it's going to be Zelda or Sheik.

Yea, I'm not quite sure what he means by that. I hope personality doesn't mean outright imbalances just for the heck of it. I mean some character play styles will naturally be better against others but ehh I guess we'll see in time.

I don't think we have any updates on the health of his hand but if he's consistently winning matches maybe he's getting better. heh.

I think he's talking about how everyone wants a plain balanced game where every character's matchups are very close to one another. I sorta agree it'd be boring having newcomers with boring attacks that were too similar to verterans'. Brawl's balancing did work for some characters (not Meta Knight and Ganondorf, obviously), it was mostly the physics change that hurt the veterans who were good in Melee (Samus and Captain Falcon.)

I wish he did chill out too, but it's not uncommon for Japanese workers to overload themselves with work and work long shifts, especially for Sakurai who asks for so many characters, stages, etc. and expect a great fighting game. It's tough, I can imagine.

also there's the fact that its pretty much impossible not to have some degree of imbalance among a roster of that size, so I don't see how that's possibly a concern

how in the world does the game being balanced mean that everyone has similar movesets
