Whatever happend to the hall of fame category anyway, Zelda was the first winner in 2011 (hence why SS was up for GOTY that year). Don't think there was a new entry in 2012. Maybe it's Mario's turn and Reggie is there to accept the honor.
What is it with Nintendo that brings out people with weird expectations regarding IPs? None of the IPs you're citing had a first installement that bombed, even the first Street Fighter had enough success to justify many ports. And that was in the 80's.It's not the only factor though, if the team/company behind it believes in the IP they will make sequels nonetheless then if after 2-3 tries the IP flops then it's buried. One memorable historical mention would be Street Fighter.
Also W101 is a terrible example because while the IP is in nintendo's hands the game is done by another studio and after they leave N might not know what to do with the ip.
People want a new series with a new ip that is given the same importance as Mario/Zelda/Metroid and they want it to be sure that will be a staple in the future portfolio of Nintendo and not only present as a mention of that kind of cool game that was released once on that +10 years old console.
That's an unrealistic expectation. Nintendo's not gonna come out with a game and be like "hey, we're gonna release sequels for this title for the next 30 years! Enjoy!" They have to be financially viable. Games like Metroid weren't created with the idea that they would be lasting forever. They're games, designed in the moment to take advantage of whatever ideas the creators have at the time.
And if Wonderful 101 was a tremendous success you'd better believe Nintendo would've done whatever they could to keep it going.

Nowadays, who's pushing sequels for games that didn't perform well? Companies might plan for series from the get go, but if the first game doesn't sell those plans are just dropped.
If TW101 sold a lot, Nintendo would hire PG again for a sequel or just do it themselves. It's not rocket science.
reggo folds into the room and says "hello" to jeorff
"hello to u reggi" says geef before he falls into one of reggie's seven unmouths and dreams forever
"hi hi to spike tv this is reggae from nitnedo i have lots of stuff to show i have plumberman and dong king kong and zeldo and samus" and the audience coos and laughs a baby laugh and a tumblr away a million doodles of a noodle armed link or samus with a blushing face and giant red nose are drawed
"here is game" he vibrates and a trailo plays for the old gorilla man. an old gorilla! what a thing. a hootin and hollerin commences
As a Nintendo fan I am scared as fuck for them being there. That's just not their audience and could come out looking like clowns for that night. IMO Zelda U is the only game in development we know of that is worthy of that stage. Now unless they surprise us with metroid U or some new modern IP.... I am for that.... But my heart tells me Nintendo will find a way to look very silly when the night is over.

Zelda should be reserved for E3 imo.
This is the craziest and most outlandish post in the thread.New console announcement.
Imagine that.
You are dense... here i'll give you a very practical example:
Xenoblade and X? make me understand that we'll see this franchise in the future and make me understand that you actually put budget and good people behind it and pump it like a new smash game or a new mario game, now multiply this with another 2-3 new franchises and you'll have people happy and probably even good sales.
And how much it sold Xenoblade worldwide? 500k? hardly a great success.
Nintendo hardly know what to do with their franchises sometimes... i doubt they know how to handle others.
Reggie will announce that Nintendo plans to announce something with regards to the next nintendo direct which will be about announcements of announcements to come in E3. E3 will hit and Nintendo will announce that games were delayed and tell us to wait for further announcements.
True story.

Holy shit.New console announcement.

Do you think X was greenlit out of the goodness of Iwata's heart? I would imagine it was because they saw the opportunity for sales growth and to expand the brand. It remains to be seen how X will do. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's going to bomb hard, and I'm someone who is super looking forward to it.
I'm not saying I don't want Nintendo to create new series or try new things, I'm saying it's unrealistic to expect them to just snap their fingers and create one on the "level" of Mario/Zelda/Metroid (which is a silly comparison because Metroid was dead for like an entire generation and may be dead again).

A Zelda-level hit takes a while to build, but considering Metroid's sales at this point that's perfectably obtainable for a new IP.
You guys thinking Nintendo is going to pay for a Bayonetta 1 port are crazy. What could such a port realistically sell?
I doubt it.The JRPG X might turn some heads if they show it
You guys thinking Nintendo is going to pay for a Bayonetta 1 port are crazy. What could such a port realistically sell? At best, it should be a free pack-in for the first printing of the game, and available on the e-Shop for 10-20 bucks.
I expect Nintendo to show nothing. I am a rock. I am an island.
I doubt it.
They'll either show Mario Kart or a SSB trailer. And neither will end up being the news or shock of the night. Different audience.

Didn't Xenoblade sell way more than 500k WW?
It sold more than that, what's your source for bringing up a 500k figure? That game had high enough demand to warrant a reprint a few month ago. If the developpement was smartly budgeted it might even made a bit of profit. And how much it sold Xenoblade worldwide? 500k? hardly a great success.
Some people knew SF1 at the time and even put enough money in it to warrant ports. No one knew what Street Fighter 1 was at the times, the game is known nowadays because of the reflected light of SF2 but not because it wan an hit in the '80s.
After a couple of tries you put a series in the bin otherwise you would not see stuff like Lighting Returns.
Why waste a chance showing Smash Bros when you can display new games? It's true that X may not appeal to that crowd but if they focus on certain aspects of X that makes it unique compared to those other jRPGs then I think it stands a chance even against Bayonetta 2, which I feel will struggle even more than X. Show multiplayer, boss battles, mech battles etc. and you stand a chance of getting the attention of those gamers you want. I'm sure if you've played Xenoblade then you know how much better the characters and story were compared to the most recent Tales and Final Fantasy games. I don't like Final Fantasy or Tales but I loved Xenoblade for being different.

Mario/Zelda/Metroid is a really big range of importance. It's not the only factor though, if the team/company behind it believes in the IP they will make sequels nonetheless then if after 2-3 tries the IP flops then it's buried. One memorable historical mention would be Street Fighter.

If I had money to bet on this, I'd definitelly go for something higher than 500k. Maybe not a million but in the realm of "successful JRPG in the current market". Gotta be closer to 700k.There is no worldwide LTD figure available. But realistically, it would probably be somewhere around there.
X is a huge open world(will possibly be the largest console open world this gen) with giant mechs that transforms into mecha motorcycles and mecha tanks, if they show it right, it will DEF turn heads with that crowd.
Being unique, being better than FF or Tales of, showing off mech and boss battles- you are seriously overestimating how much any of that would affect the appeal of the game. If they had a substantial time allocation on the show, then I'd be all for them showing off X. But that's far from the case. It makes no god damned sense to show off a game in the grim hopes that it'll turn a few heads when you have other titles that are far more suited for that audience. It would be a waste, plain and simple, and if Nintendo has any semblance of competence, they're going to keep X out of there.

Why do you think X will be bigger than Just Cause 2? Because thats how big it has to be and I don't say that happening. Heck, I guess it will be smaller then Xenoblade.

Someone should bomb Geoff with tweets to get some kind of tease about Nintendo at VGX.
This is how I reacted. The rumored announcement of Mii for Smash Bros would be panned hard. I'm not as pessimistic, though. Other Nintendo franchises could pass with that audience - F-Zero and Star Fox, for example. But neither would produce as much hype as a Zelda or Metroid. As a Nintendo fan I am scared as fuck for them being there. Is this seriously what you guys are talking about? Is it typical for trailers of new shows to be shown here?
I mean, has it been confirmed they will show something? Because I'm fully expecting absolutely nothing.

Lets be honest, it'll be a game or a clip or a piece of news no will care about.... except for the 4 or 5 super hardcore Nintendo fans who'll any Nintendo news as good news.
Maybe we'll find out what X is actually called
