the retail release of wii fit u
Well damn. I guess this can get worse than I thought.
Thanks ECG.
To be honest, I think WIi Fit U has been left to die in terms of marketing. The writing's on the wall.
the retail release of wii fit u
Take that precedent and answer this question: what's the next game on their calendar, releasing in two months?
A "New look"?? Retro cancelled Tropical Freeze and started making Donkey Kong 64-2!!! Hell yeah!
Reggie Fils-Aime said:Thanks Geoff. You know, after that introduction, maybe I won't mention the beating you took in Luigi's Ghost Mansion backstage.
Good evening to everyone attending the VGX awards show in person, and those of you tuning in at home. I'm Reggie Fils-Aime, the president and COO of Nintendo of America.
At Nintendo, we've been hearing a lot of talk about "the next generation". "The next generation of video game hardware", "the next generation of the Video Game Awards"... and while Nintendo is always looking into the future for new ways to bring the fun of games into living rooms worldwide, we think that every once in a while, it's important to take a step back and reminisce on what shaped the experiences we enjoy today.
In fact, we'd like to look back at the original Nintendo arcade hit, Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong, created by Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto, first brought us that great running and jumping gameplay we've enjoyed in games from Super Mario Bros on the NES all the way to Super Mario 3D World, released just last month for the Wii U. Not only that, but it also introduced us to a little plumber named Mario and a big ape named Donkey Kong, both of whom would later become unforgettable stars of the video game world.
But there's one thing some of us may have forgotten about. Hardcore fans might remember that the Donkey Kong we know and love today is different than the one we first met back in the arcades. The folks at Nintendo and Retro Studios have decided that after years of standing outside the spotlight, the original Donkey Kong's body is finally ready...
...
to take center stage. Enjoy.
Think about Nintendo's marketing strategy for the majority of their titles (even their biggest) over the last 4-5 years.
How they seem to not give a shit, then suddenly go all out for a particular game a month or two before launch.
How they fail to generally build hype for anything the way they did with Brawl or TP (and before you even mention it, Smash 4's marketing has been way more lowkey than Brawl).
Take that precedent and answer this question: what's the next game on their calendar, releasing in two months?

Donkey Kong Prime. A game exploring the story between DKArcade and DKJr.how's that sound
Yeah, what matters the most is definitelly if the game is fun or not, indeed. And even if its based on excisting properties, the gameplay in NintendoLand is something new, and that also counts a lot i think.Cool, yeah I have given this some thought and the points you make are completely valid. Well I think what truly matters is that Nintendo Land is still a fun game whether you consider it a new IP or not. The latter part is rather irrelevant.
So you are saying...waiting for a game 2 1/2 years is generating hype. I think it should be a mix of both. get the hype started 6-8 months before release and then start to airing commercials and trailer, interviews with the developers, etc. a month or two before release. No stealth release anymore and no extreme long waiting.
how's that sound
also why did i write reggie fanfiction what am i doing
I really hope you're right...I can understand why people are tempering their expectations, but do you really think Nintendo is this stupid? It's going to be Smash Bros. or Bayonetta.
They could have spent a bit more time on bayo 2 and tw101. Oh well... hindsight is 20/20.Yeah, I seriously wonder what Nintendo are thinking sometimes when they plan an E3 conference.
It'd be so easy to make a killer show! Acknowledge all the memes and just go with it. Game after game after game. If they don't have enough to show just put an extended gameplay demo there or something.
(and before you even mention it, Smash 4's marketing has been way more lowkey than Brawl)

Geoff: "Okay, Reggie... so that's... it?"
Reggie: "PLAY THE GAME"

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will be in attendance to show off "an upcoming Wii U game," the identity of which is unclear at this point.
So it's fucking Donkey Kong after all. Oh well. At least I don't have to waste hours of my short life watching this shit then.
Does Nintendo actually realize that Donkey Kong is not what they need or should push right now? Apparently not...
It says basically the same thing. They're showing off an upcoming game.
So it's fucking Donkey Kong after all. Oh well. Disappointing, but still good to know - at least I don't have to waste hours of my short life watching this shit then.

Maybe i am just being naive, but dont they see that they need "hype"??
Not arguing against your overall point, but at this point in Brawl's "marketing cycle", there was nothing. The daily updates didn't start until a year after the first Brawl trailer.
Retro Studios Zelda lives?Look it be Zelda U. Everyone will go in saying "OH FUCKING DONKEY KONG I'M DONE WITH THIS COMPANY" and then they show Zelda U except this time the main character will be Zelda/Sheik. Link will be a pig farmer.
Reggie was just on Gametrailers less then two weeks ago showing off Donkey Kong, the same episode in which he announced that he would have something special for the award show. I think it's more likely to be Mario Kart or Smash Brothers.
Another thing: If it was just for a game we already know plenty about, I see no reason they would be keeping the title under wraps.
It is worth noting that EatChildren and Nirolak did heavily fuel the fires of the Mario Kart/Retro studios rumour which seemed to exist exclusively to troll Nintendo fans back at E3. Of course even the most die hard of trolls would never make such brash statements, let alone believe them.. If Donkey Kong is truly what is being shown at Nintendo's first appearance at the VGX's then I will hazard to say that it is the worst entertainment decision they have ever made.
So I guess the main options I see in order of likelihood are:
1.) Mario Kart Wii U
2.) DKCR2
3.) New IP
4.) Metroid
5.) Something Else
