I think a lot of people have overstated the VGA/X's importance. Skyrim was the sequel to Oblivion and had hella commercials and marketing...I'm not sure the VGA helped that much. TLOU was from ND and also was marketed heavily and was praised loudly by all who played it and the press.

I think that has a lot more to do with their success than anything.

I'm not saying it wouldn't help to say show off X here because it would be great IMO, but lets not act like the VGA's are some e3 level stuff because it's not.
The point is that they saw fit to reveal here.

The DKC series is one of my favorites, but even I don't really want their VGA spot to be about that. Show something flashy Nintendo, show Smash Bros, show Mario Kart, show something new that will get people excited.

DKC:TF will likely be an amazing platformer, but next to the next Bethesda game or Uncharted it's going to look like a joke.

guess I'll wait for the next Hype Train of Jan 2014 Nintendo Direct YEAR OF Edition

what did you guys expect from retro and the high-selling DKCR

these are the same guys that made 3 metroid games in a row

i know you want something more appropriate for Spike's tv show, but ragging on DK isn't the answer =(

-Reggie will appear
-Apparently he will give a new look on an upcoming WiiU game (=/= a new game)
-Yesterday the cover art for DKC leaked with a "surprise" character on it (Cranky Kong)
-Reggie said he would appear, when he was at GT talking about DKC:TF
-EatChildren seems to think he knows it will be Fucking Donkey Kong
-Nobody wants to see Donkey Kong
-Everybody, myself included, is still pissed DKC:TF turned out to be Retro's next big game
Pretty much.

At least we have other non-Nintendo stuff to look forward to as well, I guess.

I'm about 99% sure it's Donkey Kong. Reggie loves talking about all those high-profile franchises for everyone. There's your Mario, there's your Zelda... oops but Mario is already out and Zelda is far off, so who's third in line... but he talked about DK already, so there's a distant chance it'll be Mario Kart or Smash.

Edit: I actually think TF looked awesome.

If it IS Tropical Freeze, and it's looking like it is, I hope the delay has made the game look much better graphically than it has in previous showings. Graphics aren't that important to me, but to this audience they're going to be rather important, especially when shown alongside next gen games. If it still looks like a poorly upressed Wii game with fur shaders then it's going to be even more of a disaster for Nintendo than it already will be if they are showing Donkey Kong..

Uh, most people seem to be speculating that Tropical Freeze is the game Reggie is going to be showing off along with the secret 4th character who has probably already been leaked by Amazon to be Cranky Kong. It makes the most sense too, the game is only 2ish months away I think compared to much more farther away games.

So what's the problem? That seems good to me. And smart on Nintendo's part.

Companies don't plan on leaks happening, so in their eyes, it's all a fun new surprise for fans.

The point is that they saw fit to reveal here.

Then I hope you are mad at Ubisoft for revealing the Division instead of a new game. And Square? Where's my FFXV trailer? And Sony, I better see like Crash, Jak, and all that shit. Also Titanfall? I'm over that shit....give me Halo 8 yo.

Like c'mon. DKTF is the next game out for their fledging console....whether or not you want it or not, if Fucking Cranky Kong is the reveal then guess what they are using this a way to promote their next big game.

Just like everyone else.

You're focusing on the wrong part of his statement. It's not about whether those games saw their success BECAUSE of the VGAs.

It's about how apparently major publishers treat the VGAs as a legitimate venue to unveil their flagship titles.

The thing is, it's more than feasible that Good Feel could have worked on DKCR2, Retro's talents are wasted on yet another Wii U platformer.

If the announcement does end up DKCTF hopefully Nintendo can pull a "Super Mario 3D World" and have everyone with a negative opinion do a 180.

Yes, focusing on another 2D platformer with the big reveal being a 4th playable character would really do wonders for the core gamer audience in N.A.

If Donkey Kong is the big reveal Nintendo deserves all the mocking they get for being out of touch.

It's DKC.

This is the thing, if this IS the big announcement then Nintendo go from the quietly competent company genuinely doing their best to make up for a few major, bad decisions, to fucking lunatics.

They will have to show something else now that everyone knows it is Donkey Kong.

...

Right?

Doubtful, it's probably too late to change whatever they have planned. Hopefully everyone floods Reggie on Twitter during the "TweetReggie" event or whatever Nintendo is doing later today. It's probably just preselected questions but hopefully he still reads a few of the tweets and sees the disappointment, haha.

So? They can make what they're fucking paid to make or fuck off.

That's exactly what they're doing. Their best-selling game ever is getting a sequel. DKCR sold twice as much as prime 1. The studio's most-acclaimed game ever didn't really function as a system seller for the gamecube. Instead of following in those footsteps, Nintendo chased the money.

I do think it would be dumb to present DKC TF at this show as the lynchpin of a presentation. Demographics don't line up. Smash trailer, maybe a mention of mario kart, and if they have anything besides those far enough to show a teaser of, then screw holding off til the last minute to announce games and drop teasers left and right. Zelda, X, random new IPs even if they're lower-budget experimental games.

I just get a little confused when people act like companies owe them something.

Despite actually working in the industry, I still get excited when I just see new things. Regardless of what it is. Yah! fun! Maybe I'm too old school now. Which is sad. Because I'm not that old, ha.

But does NCL know about this, or care?

They're the ones making the decision here. And I cannot think of too many times they've ever given the western media an exclusive look at anything (maybe Game Informer and Skyward Sword?).

You are right, but NCL is full of surprises - I think there might be a chance for F-Zero GX 2 Millenium Edition

I'm not saying that VGX = E3

What I'm saying is that this is a opportunity. A opportunity to show that Nintendo still cares about a specific demographic, namely the enthusiast gamers; these are the ones who watch the thing and tweet or post on forums at the same time.

People who Nintendo has a bad relationship with, and by showing a character reveal trailer they'll damage that relationship even further

This, plus people still have horrible nightmares of the Nintendo Land fireworks finale of E3.

That line of thinking didn't work out well for NSMBU unfortunately. I think Nintendo should know another 2D platformer on their first HD system is a poor use of talent such as Retro's.

It's doubtful the delay has anything to do with the game's graphics, but much more likely due to requesting more time to polish it, and simultaneously positioning the game to create software momentum in the first quarter of 2014. DKC:TF looks impressive in my opinion, but it is going to stand out like a sore thumb amidst a sea of games targeting the 18-35 male demographic It's just not a great fit for a VGX show.

So? They can make what they're fucking paid to make or fuck off.

They are doing just that, you honestly think Nintendo would rather put Retro on AAA games to appeal to that historically small hardcore audience on Nintendo platforms, rather than to the general audience that DK pulls in?

Does it really matter if they show Zelda now or in a couple months? It won't be out before the end of 2014.

This can be said about any game. People crave new news/media etc. It's natural to want something that you can't have.

That line of thinking didn't work out well for NSMBU unfortunately. I think Nintendo should know another 2D platformer on their first HD system is a poor use of talent such as Retro's.

I don't think they knew at the time they were going to struggle this much, but yeah. I don't think they should have focused too much on platformers in the beginning and at least diversified their output a bit more.

So? They can make what they're fucking paid to make or fuck off.

Exactly. This is a business and variety is an important key factor.

..well...then they made the right choice then.

DKCR sold more than Metroid. So technically that was a great business choice.

Look I wanted something else too as I am not a fan of the DK games but this childish 'THEY SHOULD MAKE WHAT I WAAAANT" attitude is why gamers get a bad rep. They are making what they wanted to make and are happy doing so and others loved the first one. Deal with it?

You are right, but NCL is full of surprises - I think there might be a chance for F-Zero GX 2 Millenium Edition

yeah my bad, read that wrong.

Amen.

The Smash Brothers thread is a prime example.

Sakurai is releasing a new screenshot EVERY DAY(except for the weekend) and many comments are "it's nothing!".

The entitled nature of modern society gets sad at times.

Be thankful what you get, not what you think you should get.

Even if Retro wanted to make the game? The first game was obviously not a poor use of their talent seeing how great it turned out.

Nintendo don't have any other studios that can produce the types of games Retro developed like Metroid Prime, yet they have plenty of people available that can bang out a 2D platformer whether first or second party. The quality would not have dipped enough to outweigh the sales difference as a result of that quality. They could have had Arika make the fucking thing for all I care, anything to keep Retro Studios from fucking Donkey Kong.
