Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

The developers were talking about this in a stream last night, they want to eventually have FTL-style space encounters. Probably won't be in for a while, but they've said this game will have substantial, free post-launch content. The lead developer, Tiy, had made a few tweets to the effect of "Fuck DLC" too.

I find it hilarious that the developers who insist on giving me free stuff, are precisely the ones that made games that I'll happily throw more money at. FTL itself is a perfect example; I would gladly pay for the Advance Edition content; I feel bad getting it for free! (on the other hand, their generosity prompted me to gift the game to every one of my friends, which in turn will tell their friends... so they might be onto something).

On topic, how do I cook meat? I expected a recipe would be added to my craft list when near a campfire, but that doesn't seem to be it.

What are the chances of this getting featured during the christmas steam sale? I really want the game, but my backlog has reached disgusting proportions at this point and I probably won't have time to play until the christmas sale is over.
I imagine it would be very low. They have mentioned before their goal isn't really to get the game into the hands as many people right now, but to get people who really want to play it a chance to shape how the game turns out... and then when they reach a full release get it in the hands as many people as possible.
Look at the updates as adding more value and incentive to new consumers to buy in rather than getting old consumers to chip in a little bit. They'll use part of the profits from every sale ever to reinvest into the game.

Also, I kinda am annoyed at games that split up user bases just to make some more money.

But I see your side as well. On the other hand, it doesn't seem like they are going to have a hard time in terms of revenue if this first day of early access is an indicator of continued success.

I am hoping it goes well... and indeed early signs are good. As for splitting up the user base, well a simple way to get around that would be to merely use the host's content. Aka if the host has all of the dlc everyone will be playing with the dlc even if they don't personally own it.

I know my mindset is a bit weird on this issue, but mostly I would prefer to see them continue to build upon the game for as long as possible (and minor paid dlc would for sure help extend the time they could support it), instead of doing the game for 2 years or so and then making a starbound 2... I'd rather just see starbound 1 evolve into 2 and slowly support them along the way :P

ah you said it well, in general I am actually against most DLC, but I don't mind at all paying for a large amount of new content for a small price... the FTL update is a good example as it looks like it will add a ton, and they don't want anything for it... crazy @_@

Finished downloading it, and got to play about 2 minutes before my lunch break ended.

For those curious, it seems to run perfectly fine on the Surface Pro, and it looks beautiful. I can't wait to sink more time into it when I can. I got as far as creating my character, and beaming down to the planet, but I forgot to change his name, so I may just start over. Lol.

Some possible solutions for people who have technical problems:

Ok, so I had several problems trying to get this game to work; first, the game did not start at all, no launcher, no game, nothing. When I got that working, I experienced horrible FPS in the game, but got around that, too.
I'm using WIndows 7, 64bit version, by the way, and this stuff will probably not work for everyone.

The game does not start at all:

Problem: When starting the game by using Steam or the launcher.exe / starbound.exe in the SteamApps folder, nothing happens, except for an error sound.

My personal solution: Apparently, my antivirus program thought a certain DLL file of the Starbound launcher was a trojan. The file in question is the Qt5WebKit.dll found in the SteamApps/.../Starbound/win32/launcher folder.
Setting an exception for this .dll (and the main exes: starbound.exe, starbound_opengl.exe and launcher.exe) allowed me to start the game flawlessly.

The game appears to be stuck at the chucklefish screen:

Problem: After launching the game, the game seems to be stuck at the chucklefish logo.

My personal solution: Wait. Apparently the game loads or calculates a bunch of stuff at the first launch. I waited several minutes, but then the game started fine. The next time I started up the game this process was much faster.

The game runs at abysmally low FPS:

Problem: After creating a character and entering the actual gameworld, the FPS of the game are extremely low.

My personal solution: I closed starbound, and exchanged the starbound.exe with the starbound_opengl.exe (as in, I made a backup of these two, renamed them and named the former starbound_opengl.exe to starbound.exe). Since the launcher automatically starts the starbound.exe, it will now launch the former openGL version. This suddenly yielded a perfectly fine FPS rate for me.

I'm aware that these solutions might not work for everyone, but I hope they'll help atleast some of you who experience problems : )

Ok, poked around a bit. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the Hylotl. Almost zero flavour and what they give seems a little weak/incongruous with the actual gameplay. The sneak peek seems like they're some sort of pacifist fish people that just want to "spread the good word."

I do like the hint of their devotion to "beauty." Personally, I would take them more along that path. Make their culture focused on artisans. Kind of like a warrior-poet people where everything can be seen as an art form from building, to flower arranging to warfare. Then you can add a few biological specific things since they're fish people like they have an honour system based on spawn generations as well as societal role and "clans" are just different spawn schools which share similar physical and assumed personality characteristics.

Obviously, half these ideas are skimming some Eastern philosophy but that is aligned with their visual design. I just don't like that they're modeled on Feudal Japan but flavour wise seem to be moving towards Space Mormons. It also seems incongruous to make a race that's all about peace when the player spends the first couple of hours wholesale slaughtering every single species on a random planet for skins and meat.

Our first home...still very early :)

How did you make walls?!?!

Yea there definitely has to be a way to speed things up.

Digging/mining is a huge pain in the ass. Not fun at all.

Stop trying to mine with the matter manipulator.

It's still got the Terraria gear progression. To get faster digging/mining/chopping you need the higher tier items. Stone significantly improves over the matter manipulator though. That thing is really useless for any tool work.

Given the like... instant success, I think they'll be able to support it without needing to sell DLC.

Well they already made $2,227,061 through their pre-orders. And if what they said about already making more through Steam, we can estimate they've already made at least 4.5 million

It shouldn't be surprising that there is almost zero flavor with the races right now. They said that the beta would be in 3 main phases.

Stage one, which should kick off very soon, will be overtly buggy and unfinished. Your feedback, however, will absolutely affect the game’s development process, so this part is pretty key.

Stage two will also be pretty traditionally “test”-oriented (read: not a glorified demo), but you’ll essentially be playing the full game. The main quest line won’t be hoisting the whole world on its shoulders yet, but you’ll be able to dig around in the game’s sandbox to your heart’s content.

Stage three, then, will be the culmination of stages one and two, a nearly finished game. If you want a mostly seamless, bug-free experience from your incomplete games (which is a really weird expectation, but whatever), then this is probably where you should jump in. Or you could just wait a little longer for launch. The differences will apparently be negligible at this point.

basically the lore and story and what not likely won't be implemented until much later in the beta, they are focused on gameplay for now.

How does the multiplayer work here by the way? I got into a server and I was in the same world as my singleplayer game? So friends will be in my singleplayer world? Does the world depend on the server or the character? This is confusing.
Anyone?

where does the stuff you craft go? I can't find the table or my bow

oh nm, i see it alogn the top. figured it would go in the back pack

A couple of reminder guys:

-This is a REAL BETA, shit will break and shit will break hard. So expect things to break at the least opportune moment.
-Report any bugs and crashes you may have, this will help the dev fix them.
-Try and avoid posting things that may be too spoilery in the mean time,ie you played these next 12 hours consecutively and you found some really cool mid game thing. If you must post something, use the spoiler tags.

Remember that the game just came out and a lot of its enjoyment is exploration. It's just until everyone has had the chance to play the game and see stuff on their own. And that way people will know they wont get spoiled and keep coming to the thread to talk.

*repost for new page

I never played Terraria. I bought this today and played during lunch. I do not plan on signing up for their forums, but here's some feedback and impressions:

Off the bat, it seems neat, i like the retro style and the pixel art is solid.

Character Creation was fun for what it was, but I really wish they would number the styles. If I want to tell my friend what pants I'm using I'd like to just say "4" instead of trying to describe. It's simple but makes a big difference.

Some of the buttons don't work, but still make sounds like they do. If you click the outside edge of one of the > keys it does the movement but nothing happens. Also, the scrollbar in game works with the up and down buttons and your mouse wheel, but you can't click the bar itself and drag it! really!?

Movement felt really weird. I really wish I could run. Attacking reminds me a lot of scribblenauts. I could tell right away this game wasn't about combat.

There's no real tutorial, I couldn't find the keybindings anywhere, had no idea that my matter manipulator was used to 'chop' down trees, etc. I wish they would explain this better.

Once I got going, it made more sense and was fun for the most part, but theres so many small improvements they can make to really sell it hard. I understand it is beta and hope they make the necessary changes to make this a *must have*

on another note - how the hell do you do multiplayer? I click start server, the dos box comes up and runs through a bunch of things then just halts at a line. Is there no server browser? I would really like to be able to just jump in a world with a bunch of people running around playing... that would make this game infinitely more fun.

I'll play more later if I get the chance, seems like it has a lot of potential.

Oh, I'm aware they're still working on the quests and story. I mean I'm disappointed with them in comparison to all five other races. I went through the short blurbs for each of them and the Hylotl one is literally "Homeworld destroyed by Florans. Go spread peace."

While basic, the others at least discuss a bit more about the species and what makes them interesting. The Avians and Glitch seem to have got the lion's share of development in the beta.

Wait a little longer, I'll be testing server capabilities after I get off work.

---
I'm still workin right now, but I wanted to mention something about DLC.

They actually do want to do DLC, but not things like "special costume" or "special item". Aka, stupid DLC microtransactions. They actually want to do some sort of episodic story content, but unlike how most people do it (complete one episode, then you have to wait till they finish the next ep before you can get it), they want to complete all the episodes in a season, then just release each episode once a week.

The other thing about the DLC they'd like to do, and they said they're checking with Steam, is that they'd like it if only ONE person downloads it, and if that person hosts a server, any other player can hop on the server and enjoy the DLC, w/o actually paying for it.

All right, I'm back to work, I should be home maybe in about 3 or 4 hours.
*sigh*

Stay strong HaRyu :D

Hi send me a friend request/msg when you get it setup :)

Any pictures of the zoom levels?
Could someone get screenshots of that? I'm interested to show how it looks at each zoom

Nobody has answered me yet but the most zoomed out level (2x) isn't optimized at all right now, or it could be a bug. Framerate is all over the place. The screenshot I just posted is the default, the one in the middle.

When I get finished packing I'll try and snap screens for you.

Thanks for the reply. I'm most interested in the closest zoom. I like to be nice and close and see all the details of my character, etc.

Bah, having hard time getting enough pixels to do the upgrades, have ores up the wazoo but no pixels to do anything.

Played long enough to build the distress beacon and then went to save...game decides to crash. Yeah, I'll just wait a little longer. Seems super fun though.

For DLC, I'd vote for some expansion on the spaceship side of the game. Kind of like the gummi ship thing from Kingdom Hearts, except as a side scroller. Craft up your guns, load some missile racks on the bottom, off you go. Maybe add some fancy stuff like heat management, ammo fabrication from your pixel stash - fun stuff.

How close of a game is this to terraria? I enjoyed that for awhile but got pretty burnt out on it. This looks interesting but if there are too many similar things I'll probably wait on buying it.

Is it possible to change the location the teleporter sends you to on the planet? I found an abandoned house quite a ways away and hate having to constantly walk back to it for shelter.

I also got killed in one hit by a killer turd in the sewers under an outhouse. Seems there's also a "turd" man alien down there, but I'm too scared to go down there again, lol.

3 hours in and everything is beginning to click (for the most part). But, my god, it takes forever to mine anything that isn't dirt.

Alright, finished our 3 hours session of Starbound...
That was really awesome, my bro crashed once but didn't lose progress, I was more lucky, no crash.
We finished making copper armor and my bro started to make his race's one (hylotl), next step, craft that beacon!
Also the music is perfect, really loving it! It didn't feel like a beta to me.
The only downside would be that iron are rather rare to find.
