Final Fantasy 8 now on Steam - $11.99

Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VIII are the only mainline non-MMO FF games I have not played to completion. In fact, I dont think I ever played FFVIII at all because at the time I was turned off by the more "grown up" art style shift from FFVII.

So this is totally worth $12 for me to get to check out a game I never played in the series on Steam, my preferred platform. Very cool Square.

Keep them fucking coming. I'll make you a deal. You keep releasing Final Fantasy games on Steam, and I"ll keep buying them day one at full price. This series provides a niche that Steam needs more games to fill. Hey, bring over those FFXIII games while you are at it. I beat XIII but never played the sequel because I moved permanently to PC away from consoles.

I even passed on the GMG deal specifically to buy this straight through steam. It was worth the extra couple of bucks for me to be able to yell at Square HEY SQUARE OVER HERE. RELEASE YOUR GAMES HERE MORE, YO!

Anyone who approaches FF8 with no previous knowledge of its wacky systems will most likely "play it wrong".

Agreed, if you go in for the first time and don't use a FAQ, I can almost guarantee you will not get a full set of cards. Even with the FAQ it is such a tedious process.

Refining for magic has been covered, but it's also important that you junction spells to your magic stat for the rare time when drawing is a better option. Then you can draw 9 spells at a time instead of 1-2. It's really not that bad, at all.

Read the thread and use refine abilities. You only need Draw to get the missable G.Fs

Can you refine for the rarer spells like Aura and such? I remember spending HOURS on the Isles of Heaven & Hell drawing those from the hidden points on the world map.

Yep. especially if you don't try to draw to 100 for everything you can in one fight. Drawing isn't so bad if you grab a few, finish the fight, repeat as you go, in addition to refining.

So what I am hearing is that they fixe the worst part of the game?

That this is on Steam and features enhanced visuals among other enhancements is great, but I am waiting for this video game to be brought to consoles in this new form and maybe even remade altogether for the PS4.

FFVIII is most fun when you break it, although that removes the challenge of anything. That said, I think I am good sticking with the PSN release.

Maybe some day on
mobile or iOS there's no point in remaking this game for PS4.

My least favorite FF besides 2, it is still enjoyable for the most part, hated the drawing mechanic and one particular part of the story.

Maybe I'll get it on a sale

I remember the previous FF8 PC port having midi music, that you had to find a unofficial music patch to get the original music. Does this version come with the original psx music?

Bought.
FF8 is one of my favorite FFs.
The first one I beat and the only one I've beaten 100%.

But Magic Booster?
So you can break the game instantly? Oh well, at least it's not like I have to use it.

I'm pretty sure you can refine any magic in the game, including Ultima. By the time I was in Deling City I had 300 Tornado spells because those birds outside the city dropped windmills which could be refined into 10 or 20 Tornado each.

this isn't really breaking it imo but I love getting Lionheart on disk 1 through triple triad. Maybe it does count as breaking I don't know.

It's been like that since the base game.

Yep, but you need certain GFs first. I forgot if it's Quetzalcoatl or Siren that creates Aura and such.

So is this the OT then?

Otherwise i'll stick with my suggestion of:

Final Fantasy VIII |OT| Gabe Finally Passes the SeeD Exam

How do people already have achievements for finishing it at level 1?

That's a cool achievement, it's actually easier than leveling up, I think.

I drool at the idea to experience the FF VIII intro in 1080p

It was the complete end sequence that was a winner for me. I must have played that final fight just to watch the ending on my crappy 14" portable tv a dozen times.
Seifer's smile as garden passed overhead, Laguna putting flowers on Raine's grave, Zell choking on hotdogs, Selphie's jealousy, Squall and Rinoa on the balcony and garden 'doing an ET' floating off in front of the moon with that gorgeous orchestration and the prelude theme.
One of my favourite gaming memories, the whole thing was a delight.

Yo so like can we have some impressions from those that got the game and tried it?

Almost there 75% done.
Also this was the first Fantasy game I played as a kid. What is all this talk of breaking the battle system? Is there some kind of special mechanic? All I remember as a kid is that the GF (garden fighters) kicked ass

Skip GF animation button is the only feature I want. Although you can also just not use them I guess...

8 at least has the Boost ability, so you had something to do during those long summons, and you could really up the damage done significantly if you were fast.

There should be no reason to use them at all... unless you like long cutscenes and shitty damage.

See above. Also, they look cool.

You can draw the same magic over and over and have 255 stats at level 1, and as enemies scale with your level you're incredibly overpowered.

Characters and monsters look so much better than ps1 version. So many details are finally noticible. Backgrounds look somewhat pixely but not as bad as VII PC. Music sounds different than ps1....which I actually don't mind. Would love to hear different renditions of these songs (but in sure I'm alone here lol).

13€. LOL. Not buying when I got it on PSN (which means portable on PSP and Vita) for 5€...

According to Steam Achievements, 7.7% of players have gotten all the cards and got to level 100, while 2.6% have completed the game without levelling Squall up. This has to be pretty bugged, right?

Steam Achievements don't mean anything.

Omg, it happened. I cannot believe it has been released, after so many years.
What an awesome way for me to end the year. :D

Absolutely love this game. The music is excellent the characters are awesome and the story is pretty good. Great side quest variety. The is the 3rd best final fantasy game.
