PS4 will beat PS3 lifetime sales, says Sony boss

I honestly doubt the PS4 will have the same life spam as the PS2. This is key because we also expect the PS4 to have a shorter gen cycle than the PS3. This is tricky because we have to wait for the core audience to buy the thing and see if interest remains for the average gamer and casuals. Interest could die down with stuff like micro-transactions in full price games, Japanese studios are practically gone in the home console space, and so on.

It could happen, but I feel there's a lack of interest this time in the mass market; it's mostly local hype regardless of initial sales.

The trend I'm hearing is that the console cycles are going to be shorter. PS4 has to sell more than 10M a year for 7 years to beat PS3 numbers... Wait...
The system won't stop selling when the PS5 hits. The PS1 actually finished second in the PS2 generation if you look at it that way. They are probably planning to release new hardware much sooner, especially how fast technology trends are moving. The PS4 is coming in at a cheaper entry price than the PS3, and there is no Wii like phenomenon to compete against at this point.

Sony should pass PS3 numbers without a doubt.

We'll find out with post-xmas sales whether the current sales are just hype from core gamers or something more...

You DO realize the PS2 sold a big chunk of its 150 million consoles after the PS3 came out and it had a massive price drop right?

I thought arrogant Sony is back, then I read the article.

"It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we’ve been able to achieve with PS3" =/= PS4 will beat PS3 lifetime sales

This. Thread title took some liberties with this one.

Ironically, for PlayStation fans, PS3 is probably PS4's stiffest competition right now, since it still has lots of good games coming and has better media features (like DLNA and a better Blu-ray player) right now.

I really don't the see the system selling as much as he said, look at it like this,

  1. blu ray players are cheaper (major factor for some people that got the ps3 was that it was cheaper than getting a blu ray player)
  2. Xbox will still take a large piece of the market, so sales will be 50 ps4, 40 xbox and 10 wiiu
  3. the system will need to sell 10 mil units per year to get past ps3 that is before ps5 comes.

Should beat PS3 handily.

1) Off to a great start with good supply
2) MS and Nintendo significantly weakened this go around

Some people are still convinced that consoles are doomed and such.

Wasn't PS2's biggest year the year of the PS3 release or the year after? Something crazy like that.

Something like that. I believe it was either 2006 or 2007 where it outsold all 3 new consoles combined.

Eh, eh. Depends on the length of the gen.
If we get, for some reason, a 4-5y gen instead of a 7y gen.. i don't know.

A realistic goal to meet I would say, especially considering they don't have to deal with the bullshit the PS3 had to go through in its early years.

PS2: 155 million
PS1: 104 million
PSP: 80+ million
PS3: 80+ million

Playstaion brand is the strongest in Videogames space. PS4 will just solidify this.

Some people are still convinced that consoles are doomed and such.

but the ps4 has been doing nothing but break records is a given fact.

Don't let facts get in the way of doom and gloom! Despite no fact (other than WiiU and Vita failing) pointing to the collapse of console gaming/hardware sales, some forum users and game "journalists" alike are convinced that consoles will be crippled this generation because of mobile.

Or as Arstechnica is so fond of saying: Don't read too much into it.

I doubt it. It's already behind pace.
Joke post, or tenuous grasp on reality?

“That wasn’t dictated by us, that was by the moves the competition was making. That remains the largest surprise for me – how visceral that reaction was. But the fact that we had to put a stake in the ground, in an area that we felt was just common sense, still has me quite literally scratching my head.”

Damn.

Initial demand will be met soon and shortages will disappear. This simple, straight forward console will have great legs IMO.

They a little too early for that. I think ANYONE will be lucky to get 70 million sales again in this era. Better be some game changing releases coming up hehe

The thing that's got me thinking it's possible is I'm seeing chatter from work mates and neighbors about getting a PS4. These people I would have never thought in my life that they were gamers or even interested in gaming but damn if they aren't asking me day in and day out where can I find one! It literally is blowing my mind simply because the last time it was like this everyone was looking for a Wii including me.

Probably not if Japan drops off of the console radar this gen..

What if Sony revitalizes Japan and brings in more sales?

I have very little doubt it won't. Keep up the console making and being about 1st party games as well as better looking 3rd party games and it won't be much of a challenge.

In any case sony is in a much better position now than 7 yrs ago.

Even tho the general "consoles are doomed" argument has no real basis, the decline of consoles in Japan is really well documented. It looks really unlikely that the PS4 would ever come close to the PS2 levels of prosperity, but hopefully it will keep pace/outpace the PS3 slightly in Japan.

Although people randomly speculate if anything can revitalize the Japanese console scene, it would be Sony's rumored venture into VR, which has the potential to be a huge wildcard in Japan, I guess.

Not to be a downer, but Nintendo handhelds are just as solid.

I love the vita, and I know it's life hasn't ended yet, but we can't pickand choose.

I believe it, easily. It's starting cheaper and with a much better image in the public eye, and it's already broken some console sales records.

Didnt Sony also just say this gen wont last as long as the last??

Dosnt seem to add up.

Just because the gen is probably gonna be 1 year shorter, doesn't mean they're going to stop manufacturing/selling PS4s sooner. PS2 was still selling/getting games until recently.

As has been said ten times already here, Sony is not just going to stop making PS4s the day PS5 launches. If anything sales will pick up since the PS4 will probably be $150 or less by then.

True, but the PS3 will also continue selling. Also, a lot of people are using the PS2 as an example, but that system was on a still fast-growing brand when dedicated consoles were much more popular. The games being made for it are different from what we get now in both variety and quality. The PS3 still has some ways to go to match Wii sales in such a long gen cycle, the PS4 is unlikely to match that with such a narrow level of output in games such as AAA games and shooters.

MS is doing a better job with restock in NA right now, NPD next week is going to be very interesting, I don't think the NA gap will be very large at all, maybe I'm wrong, but Sony has a long way to go.

Sony's doing good so far, but they will have to keep the momentum going once December's over & when the launch hype for PS4 dies down.

There is a very high chance there will be at least one big news story this gen that either greatly increases or decreases sales......like if a huge hack were to occur on either console
Did the PSN hack really harm Sony? I haven't put in the research but Jack gave a number like %95 of their online base had come back after the hack. And honestly, while '09 was an amazing year, I like to think the PS3 hit its second stride in '11.

They have the games to do that. Marketing agreements with 2 big hitters ( Destiny, WatchDogs ) and 3 of their own games ( inFamous, Driveclub, MLB ). If the hype is strong now, it's going to get less when there is more. Well, unless they've seen Titanfall ( hehe ).

I'd imagine months 3 - 14 go a lot smoother in terms of hardware sales. Providing a factory doesn't get blown up or something.

I was sure someone linked to a story in the 2.1 mill PS4 thread about it.

I'll try find it
You might be thinking of the joke post (that several people fell for) where someone said that the Vita also sold 2.1 at launch, but without the million after it.

I would hope that cannibalizing your competitor's sales would lead to higher sales. What will really be news is if PS4 manages to create more customers than PS3/360 divided up last gen.
