Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

So what race did you folks start with? I started the Glitch, although I want to do a Hylotl character next. When the official game hits though, I'm being a novakid.

Snow worlds are pretty, but boy does it get cold fast.

9D0AB1B2E209D140057736F4BC74A4DE22B87DBF

Not sure how far I want to stray from base camp on this planet.

Finally have a copper axe and mining is improved. Seems weird to be so technologically advanced and mining with a pick-axe :p

Love playing on the GAF server though!

What song can you play? I picked up a reed organ and can only play Canon in D so far. Wasn't sure if each instrument initially gave you a specific song or not.

Also found a king glitch in his own castle and he attacked me on sight. So I killed him and took his crown. Hail to the glitch king!

Found out you can walk in a circle around the planet but it's a very long walk, obviously depending on the planet size, etc.

Songs are in ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Starbound\assets\songs. You can make your own in ABC notation, though it doesn't seem like the notation is fully implemented in the game.

Is there any point to going along near the bottom of the planet/moon? Any increasingly more valuable chests/hidden rooms? Obisidian is so hard to go through that it is too frustrating at this stage. I've been hunting for platinum, but so far have only found it on random chests on the surface.

Moving horizontally (as a Floran at least) is way too time consuming. I wish my character was a 3 block height.

some noob questions

after the 1st time you drop from your ship, if you go in 1 direction all the way will you ever reach your spawn point again?

do vines only appear in caves? if i don't see any caves, should i just randomly mine the ground until i find one?

can i kill npcs without the rest of the town/guards being alerted if nobody saw me? maybe like in a closed room?
if i kill a king, can i be the king or will everyone try to kill me now?

after building a crafting table, can i put them back in my inventory?

is there any way to quickly loot items? or drag and dropping each item is the only way? this is kinda annoying

Anybody else have this issue, I have my screen resolution set correctly in the options but when I choose fullscreen and click accept I get booted to my desktop. Game is still running but I can only play in windowed mode.

Yeah, you'll loop around.

Yeah, just hit it with your pick (manipulator probably works too).

Shift-click to quickly move stuff. Shift-right-click to split stacks.

How can I tell how much fuel I need to reach a destination? I appear to not have enough to get anywhere, but I can't tell how much I need.

EDIT: Figured the above out by adding more fuel and trying again. Kinda lame that you can't tell how much more fuel you need before you can get there though.

Also, do all the various little capsule things just have some pixels, or can I get loot?

How do you make a tent?

Also, I hope they add a list of all worlds players have landed on in the future for servers.

Does anybody else have an issue with quitting the game? I can quit the main game fine, but the launcher stays open. If I just close that window, the game isn't "closed" and Steam still shows me as in-game. Steam itself won't close with a game running like that, so I have to force quit Steam via the task manager, then restart Steam to get out of it to play something else (or just not have Starbound run.)

Finally got the last study check added to my account so now time to pray it works on Steam because I can't take it. The only downside is that I'm sick plus going through a medication change withdrawal at the same time so I'll only play in short bursts. It just looks way too fun after getting burnt out on Terraria.

The planet system sounds like the best part to me.

Is there a way to "store" your pixels in a safe place so that you don't lose them when you die, kind of like how you can do with money in Terraria?

how do I quickly switch to items in the L and R slots? if i press 1 twice (or any number twice) I use the L item. can't figure out how to use the R item.

oh, z switches. nice.

holy shit 3x3 mining squares!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn fun, this game.

I just got done raiding an Apex Moon base full of mad scientists. I'm still debating whether or not I should raze the building, those steel blocks are damn tempting.

thanks!

anybody knows whether or not you will be attacked if you killed an npc in a friendly town but nobody saw the killing?

Does anyone know what this giant pod-like thing is? I've encountered it 3 times now. The first time interacting with it set me on fire after it exploded, the second time it sort of folded itself into space and vanished, and the third time it killed me instantly (lost over 1000 pixels FFFFFFFFFF!)

Do planets sizes vary? If I look at a planet in the navigation window and it is smaller do you loop quicker around on the surface?

seem to be random buffs/debuffs - one time it healed me fully.

It either buffs or kills.

Guys, eating feathercrown does nothing for my hunger..should I even bother to continue planting this stuff?

Seems to have a random positive or negative effect. I've had them blow me up, heal me and give me temporary jump boost.

so I have explored left and right and down and around... but i just realized i haven't explored up.... is there anything of interest in the sky at all?

Damnit. It if was just a random buff I should have just left it alone. I was hoping there was something unique about those pods, like a chance to gain a tech or something. Fuckkkk! Lol.

I stopped playing Terraria for awhile, but looking forward to getting in on the ground floor here. Especially with the space exploration theme.

Activating them with a shield up seems to negate the instant damage. You'll still get the burn debuff, but at least they haven't killed me since I tried the shield.

so.. guys, if i don't see any caves around, should i just randomly mine until i found one?
need vines to make a bow, and someone said they're only on caves :(

So almost have all iron armor just need some more pixels for the chest piece. Explored quite a bit and came across a temple like pit that eventually dropped into some sort of lava pit with mounted guns and fellows with fire guns. They tore me up lol. I will go back and Rambo that with my iron bow, 4 throwing knives and 2 Molotov cocktails, they have to have some sweet stash in there somewhere. On my way to the fire pit ran into a lone assassin that called me an infidel and was dispatched samurai style with a jumping sword slash.

--edit above-- there is no selling atm I believe, all pixel values are the cost to produce them with the 3d printer.

So, I see a large number of items have a decent pixel value on them. Can I like, sell them anywhere?

As far as I know the numbers on the items aren't related to selling at all, the number is strictly related to how much it would cost if you made a copy with the 3d printer. (only items that have a value that isn't 0 can be copied with the printer)

so I have explored left and right and down and around... but i just realized i haven't explored up.... is there anything of interest in the sky at all?
I came across an anchor leading up to the sky once. Followed it up and there was a ship full of Avians. Bought some bombs from them...

I cleaned out an Avian Temple earlier, but all I found was pixels. Lots of pixels from breaking jars and stuff... and killing Avians. I also looted the shit out of all the various decorative items, but it didn't seem like there was much of a point to the temple. It was pretty large, but there wasn't even a single chest in it. What were they... guarding? Lol.

so playing around on the official forums I am reading how people already have mods for larger ships (and even space stations) that work for online play.

Have the developers said one way or another if they plan to have steamworks support?

This makes sense. I unfortunately never found a place to sell anything.

mods?!
and its only in beta jesus

After playing for a bit all I can say is that Beta really needed to be released early this year.

With the community working with the devs for finding bugs and help improve the gameplay I'm pretty sure this game will have a "short" beta period

Played around for a bit and I like it a lot. It feels like a mix between Terraria and Minecraft in a sense what you need to keep yourself fed and warm to live. Insta-beaming to the ship feels a bit cheap because I can escape anything like that.
Is playing without wiki possible here? I remember having hard time playing MC without knowing lots of stuff what you can only learn from community. Don't want to spoil the game for myself by reading wiki.

yeah mods already.. like 36 hours after beta release... you can find them in the official forums here

I don't believe I can agree with either thing you are trying to say here. While yes it is a beta and there are bugs, they still needed to get the game to a state where they felt comfortable letting the public play around with it to help find bugs. Currently it's getting a ton of praise as a solid game even though it's in beta, that good press will help them a ton. When you get negative press about something, even with a beta, it's really hard to shake it, and given how much build up the game had already they couldn't afford a bad beta. Had they released it earlier this year in a poor state, they could have potentially killed the momentum the game had hype wise.

As for it being a "short" beta period, I don't really see that happening either. I am not expecting the time between this release and "full" release to be as long as minecraft was, but I also don't remotely expect a full release of starbound before Q3 2014, which I can't really consider a short amount of time in a beta. They have never seemed to be in a rush to get it done. They will no doubt take their time and slowly put features into the game. Beyond features though, the game is in need of some serious optimization, and that could take a lot of time to do as they continue to add features.

also...

OOH
shame i have to go to bed so I can work tomorrow.

oh well tomorrow night can be filled with starbound and marvel puzzle quest lol.

oh hey the game loads a lot faster now... time between clicking launch starbound and getting to the title sceen was cut in half... and I no longer hang on the title screen, instead I hang on this screen

Sorry to say that but if your game progression is pushed forward for have "good" press instead of a better way to improve the gameplay, i dont believe you're a good developer.

The UI crashes like crazy. Sometimes I'll accidentally bring up the crafting menu with 'c' (keep confusing inventory for character) and when it types in the search box, it'll crash. Happened at least 4 times so far.

Ah well, on to the
Beta
Sector. Running out of things to do it seems like, hopefully I'll start finding the higher tier ore more frequently. It seems like it's much more rewarding to explore the surface of the planets/moons (as another gaffer pointed out) rather than to dig and explore. A little disappointing, but hopefully there are a ton of cool treasure rooms hidden underground that I have just never found. As I mentioned before though, digging horizontally is a huge pain. Waiting for the diamond pickaxe before I do any further spelunking.

so it seems like a lot of the prices to make stuff now are like 10% of what they used to be. a lot of the weapons only cost 30 to make now, when I recall them costing like 300 lol.

(they did say it would be drastically reduced costs though :P)
