Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Ridley has not been deconfirmed or confirmed for anything. We must keep Ice's dream alive dang it.

Ridley was too wasn't he? I thought he was confirmed as a stage hazard.

The believers will tell you that he was not called out specifically by name, but basically, yes.

"2013/08/20: Pic of the day. Out of the blue, here's a new stage--the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M! An enemy from Samus's past may appear at any second…"

Eventhough I think nobody would argue the quote not being about Ridley, it doesn't exclude any option aside from "Ridley could show up on this stage".

Considering villagers' announcement footage had the boxing ring stage in it, it could even mean Ridley's newcomer movie takes place on Pyrosphere.

Keep in mind that pretty much everyone dismissed ROB as playable in Brawl due to him being a common enemy (and people trying to dismiss toon link cause of the train stage).

If ROB managed to survive this: http://www.smashbros.com/wii/en_us/gamemode/modea/modea06.html

I think it's a bit naive to say that sakurai's vague ridley quote excludes him entirely.

Anyone not expecting DKC at VGX is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Im expecting donkey kong, but i'm hoping for more. I've learned to never expect an e3 2004 ever again. The closest they've done recently was the other M reveal. Now they open the show with their big hitters instead of ending with teasers of one. Woo nintendo land! I guess the E3 direct this year ended with smash/mega man, but the fact that it was a direct somehow didn't make it as exciting.

That's fair. I wouldn't get my hopes up though, but I don't deny there is always a possibility. Today he did the smart thing by CLEARLY stating skull kid is an assist tropy, because you know that if he said anything but, people would interpret it as him being playable.

He's trying to throw us off the scent.
I'm not expecting him either, but I'm not sure if Peach's move is a deconfirm.

I guess if Blue Toad is going to be the "playable" Toad from now on, it's an easy fix, but then there's the issue of what the hell is this character even going to do. His only other major playable appearances all involved him plucking stuff from the ground beneath him and throwing them and that's already inspiration for Peach's move.

I guess he could be fast but we have Sonic for that.

Mildly disappointed about Skull Kid, but it was expected.

*Implying he can't use any of the power-ups from 3D World.*

And like Waluigi and Daisy, they could still incorporate skills from the spinoff kart and sports games.

So now he can float and scratch things. Yay?

Powerups got baked into the characters proper in the past, Mario and Luigi have fireballs as part of their basic moves. It seems weird that they'd suddenly break that mentality for a new character, but I guess it isn't the strangest thing in the world. The real downer would be that the powerups he'd have to choose from are boring outside the world they're utilized in.

Not saying it would be Blue Toad, I'd expect regular Toad to be the default color with blue/yellow as alts. Anyway NSMB series and SM3DW present a lot of opportunities for new gameplay ideas via powerups, the existing Mario characters barely scratched the surface of iconic moves like Tanooki suit.

I don't hold unreasonable hopes for character choices, don't worry.

Now a stage editor that actually references games ... that's a different story.

They don't necessarily have to be straightforward attacks.

The Tanuki suit, cannon block and Double cherries in particular seem like they would present some interesting form-changing gameplay. (I'd stick the boomerang suit in that list too but there's one Link too many to justify that.) The Tanuki suit could be an agility booster that replaces his side or down attacks with the tail moves, but at the cost of being even lighter than before. The double cherries could work similarly to the ice climbers (if Nana could be dispatched in a few hits) and the cannon could turn Toad into a projectile-reliant character with more attack power in exchange for disabling a lot of his attacks. The form changing could make him dynamic without being very unpredictable like G&W or Villager.

Yeah, amazing week for daily image. For last few weeks, Sakurai kept his pace pretty well with informations so I hope that he would continuing that for many weeks.

He's trying to throw us off the scent.
I'm not expecting him either, but I'm not sure if Peach's move is a deconfirm.

The way I see it, deconfirms work like this to me:

1. Sakurai outright tells us a character won't be playable in this version.

(I know some people exclude characters cause of exclusion in older versions but ... villager, sakurai re-evaluates what he expects from fighters each time.)

2. The character's most common/only/most iconic form is somehow present during regular play.

ROB didn't qualify cause common subspace enemies don't actually show up in regular play.

Toon Link's train form didn't qualify because, as some people pointed out, he's not particularly easy to mix up with playable T.Link (alt colours or regular)

When I see a character as another characters move though, That essentially turns them into someone as ingrained in popular play as an assist trophy. It'd essentially feel like having charizard *both* playable and as a pokeball pokemon. ( a big reason I'd say Toad's chances are essentially zero.)

So, your saying if Ridley shows up in Pyrosphere he still has a chance... YYYYYEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!! :D

I'm hoping Other M Ridley is a hazard and regular/meta Ridley can be playable. If they do that he could fake people out with the hazard and it would be glorious.

Slim chance though.

So I had a dream last night that Sakurai then went on to confirm that Yoshi was an assist trophy on Monday to much anger and rage. Then a few days later Sakurai confirmed Yoshi was also playable with the announcement that in smash 4 any playable character can show up in an assist trophy to fight for a few moments.

Only 3 people in the prediction contest guessed (predicted) that Skull Kid would be an Assist Trophy. The rest either didn't put him on their list at all, or they put him under the playable characters list.

You're damn right he hasn't been deconfirmed.

Finally,

Did anyone call dibs on a skull kid avatar? Can't remember.

Nobody called dibs, surprisingly. Lol.

Oh wow, it's skull kid. I can't wait for Little Mac now, as an assist trophy too

Hey!! You don't belong here anymore. >:(

I swear I thought it was some ant creature.......I need to check my eyes.

Wonder how Heath and TB will react.

So damn sad. I wanted Skullkid playable, and this just put a bullet through my heart..

STUTx1p.jpg

Pic of the day. Here's a new Assist Trophy--the Skull Kid! I repeat, it's an Assist Trophy, not a new fighter. The characters announced on the website are the fighters!

Fuckin' shit.. T^T

At least you are in Skullkid! D:

Besides maybe Ganondorf and Wolf
and Banjo in some parallel universe where Nintendo kept Rare ;_;

Banjo!!! :[

EDIT: Hey, here's a question...will Assist Trophies be version exclusive? Like certain ones only appear in 3DS, and certain ones in Wii U?

I at least expect them to do that with the Pokemon to mimic the Versions Exclusivity of the Pokemon games.

--------------------------------
I hope the old Assist Trophies that are returning get an upgrade to look this good.

Especially Jill and Barbara who were pretty bad (although I still hope the latter's playable for a cool female rep)

Zeeroid is our martyr!

Never forget :(

I thought it was threadworthy. First assist trophy, year of majora, etc etc. Sure the bait and switch was mean, but it was a bit funny too. It's not like we'll make another assist trophy thread unless it's something like an existing character is now an assist trophy.

I hope not. I would rather to see all of them on both systems.

Wait was Zeeroid perma'd?

Naw, I think he got banned for a week.

I like Zeeroid but bait-and-switch threads are always bad ideas.

Just because everyone else does it, including mods, does not make it a good thing to do. Rise above that shit,

They only confirmed that stages would be version exclusive. As interesting as it'd be, I think they'd prefer keeping assist trophies the same for both versions.
