Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Eh. There is difference between not viable mechanics and botched progression (its impossible currently to progress to every new tier without glitches) and testing balance or features.

I've been in tons of betas and i havent played one that had progression completely broken. [except for Diablo 3 ;P]
As i said, everything they are changing in a patch in few days, could be solved by having one, decent person to playthrough game from the beginning to higher tiers.
Its the first feedback You can get, if game is progression is playable or not.

There is tons of other stuff that, as we are in beta, we can test. This is not one that we should. We should test speed of progression, if thats not too slow or too fast, or why players skip that content and not others etc, but not test if You can even playthrough it.

There is a reason why people complained about it just after few hours of Starbound beta, because its freaking obvious.

Maybe you should have waited for phase 2 of beta testing. Sounds like they were targeting someone like you when they said that, if you can't take a broken game, then wait.

I like being part of the feedback they need to make a complete game, and I'm glad that they put the beta out when they did.

Did server explode? I was just on it an hour ago and now I can't connect.

I was on just minutes ago.

Concerning the two GAF Inns: I think after yesterday some people spawn on a second planet, now. You can find the two coordinates in this screenshot (GAF Planet 1 in the chatbox, GP2 in the spacemap):

Lila already built a new GAF Inn on this planet:

and can somebody tell me how to use this elevator(?)

They really need to redo hit boxes. Every single enemy takes no damage from head shots, it just passes right through them, it's super annoying.

Does anybody know if there is a way to skip the launcher?
It's way too big for my desktop resolution, I can't even get to the start game button.

Great, I step out to run an errand, and I hear the server crashed. I'll be back in 30 min. Hang tight.

Thanks for hosting by the way. I appreciate it and enjoy exploring and building with you guys.

When server crash do they give you nice error logs/crash dumps like when the client crashes?

Huh, did they do a wipe?
I still got all my items and it doesn't look like my homeplanet has changed.

I think the update resulting in a wipe will be tomorrow evening or maybe monday. They said they wanted to take the weekend to make a big update, rather than just update last night with some minor tweaks.

I think the issue with "it's now sci-fi enough" can be fairly easily fixed. For starters, making the matter manipulator upgradeable. Mentioned before, but something like the ability to infuse it with the powers of other tools via the 3D printer or whatever. The default speed is painfully slow.

And techs I think you're supposed to be able to use more than one at a time given that you have 4 slots for them, but they're just broken. Like I said before, the tooltips explaining what they actually do are all missing in-game.

So yeah, it's still very rough, even if it looks more polished than it actually is on the surface.

There's a server window with a bunch of things that'll make a lesser man insane. I've more or less got it figured out.

Anyway, home now, server down for maintenance for a bit, should be back up around 12:30pm EST. (about 20 minutes)

Is there a limit to how high you can build? Haven't found any info on this online.

I tested this yesterday. I used blocks to get to space. After about 5000 blocks used, I got to space and died of cold within 20 seconds. I should have been wearing leather armor as the silver did not help.

So no, no limit although there are meteors in space evidently which may destroy stuff.

What the above said.

Kinda bummed, I don't have any desire to play with the wipe looming....so I'm gonna have to find something else to occupy gaming time.

I can understand that people feel this way, but it's not like they didn't warn everyone. This is why I'm waiting until at least phase 2 of the beta before I start playing. This is a game that will only get better by waiting.

This game feels like a big MMO and it really is much more enjoyable with lots of people. Having people in different parts of the universe is great. Colonizing different planets and building structures there.

Taking this further I would like to see:
- Ability to rename a planet something unique. eg Alpha Ant Mantis IV Ver 9123 to Earf
- Ability to develop technology on a planet to change it (increase monster spawn, change weather, replant trees, etc). This is the part that will differentiate this game from others of the same genre.
- Protecting beam down locations from editing. Beam down locations can be griefed and users can dig straight down or plant traps that can kill visitors.
- Editing Permissions. Designate a square/rectangular area as non editable only by specific users (and their party). This way a player can have a house on a planet and store their treasure without worry. Same goes with the ship.

I really don't like: worlds are the same and visible through coordinates. I wish there was a random seed for the universe so each server is different. Personally, I don't like people giving coordinates to legendary items (x,y just walk a little to the right and there is a legendary sword). That cheapens the experience. Imagine a website which you plug in coordinates and it returns to you rare chest/tech locations. Thats why the universe needs a unique seed to randomize all that.

I agree... With all of that.

Server is backup.

I'm thinking of setting up a twitter account just for the server, that way its easy for you guys to see any updates regarding it. I'll post details shortly.

You should post these sort of things over on the main forums, or even reddit. Places where feedback can actually be read by the devs.

okay I'm ready for the character wipe. I raided an apex lab and remodeled my house.

I'm really glad I found all those cupboards and storage lockers. I have the beta sector engine piece in one of them.

Again, how do you install engine components?

Is there any reason to build up? Floating islands, airships, Colombia-style cities, stuff like that? I know the devs are putting in underwater cities so that's why I'm curious

On that note, has anyone found an ocean planet yet? Saw a screenshot of one on the main site

someone should make a Bioshock planet when they introduce underwater cities

Seen many stuff of it on YouTube and before I saw that well I wasn't planning on buying it... But now! Man I want it so badly :P

By the way, "shields have no stats" is inaccurate: I've found at least three distinct tiers of shield with different amounts of soak, one of which is strong enough to full-block the robot boss.

They aren't labeled or craftable, however, and that may need a tweak.

I found an airship, but I didn't have to build up to know it was there. There was an anchor embedded into the surface of the planet I was on, so I figured there would be something up there.. For the other stuff I think you just have to explore the skies..

I hope they add another way to explore the sky. Like a smaller spaceship, or flying mechs.

I wanna play but they are reseting tomorrow so I don't want to waste my time :(

They're only resetting characters.

And techincally, all its doing is erasing quests (if you store your stuff on a planet (whether SP or MP world) you'll be fine, that stuff wont disappear.

So...

Lets say, you have gathered enough gear to make it a cakewalk to beat the first boss. Then there's a character wipe. If you stored your gear somewhere, you can just go pick it up, rush through the quests, and then defeat the boss easily.

I mentioned it earlier, but there's two kinds of wipes, and they will warn us which one is coming. The reason for the warning is so we can take proper precautions and actually store stuff.

Oh really? they confirmed this? So if i put all my stuff in a chest on a planet I can go to that planet post wipe and it will be there?

Has this been confirmed? If so, what's the point of the wipe?

Since there's a tech and sci-fi gear, have the devs said anything about high-tech digging gear like laser drills or something like that.l

Weapons, even the most basic pistol, cause brick damage.

If you increase that damage...

stars2q0us1.gif

Granted, that was just a 'weapons test that looked cool', so I doubt it's still in... but considering the pickaxes' description calls them outdated, I wouldn't be surprised if we get at least power digging equipment.

Remember, this is the Beta for a game that has 10 tiers of content. We're also missing fossils, which is another thing to find underground. When Terraria launched, the only thing underground was mushroom forests, the underground portion of the jungle, and hell. It was only later that they added little shacks, mini-dungeons, etc.

I hope we're only scratching the surface with content here.

Your character (and ship) will be gone, but as long as you saved all your things, the only real drawback to a wipe is that you have to redo quests.

Unless you've been scanning everything with the 3D printer like I have to clear up your inventory. Oh well, it's the Game of Forever, that means there's plenty of time =)

Looking for a little guidance. I have done pretty much all of what I would consider the early stages. Gone through all the quests up to the beacon. I have been digging but that doesn't seem to produce much more than ore and meat. I went to a new world and found a town that sold some better weapon but they are not much better than what I have and can make by default with the anvil. What should I do now? Keep going to other worlds where the threat level is higher and higher? I want to find some loot to help fight the boss. Or find plans to build stuff.
