Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I havent said its not rushed at all, but i dont think it was massively rushed, like for example launch console games were.

---

But ok, lets stop with this witch hunting. I just hope they learned from this heavily and next patch wont have as terrible fundamental flaws they have now.
I dont mind wipes, but weekly wipes does not really help testing at all.

Call it whatever you want to call it but the developers were clear from day 1, the game is currently incomplete and broken during this phase. They released it so people get something to start playing before the years end and so they can get feedback. Guess what, progression, combat, balance etc are also part of the game and instead of rambling like a mad man, perhaps you could do a well written write up on how you think the progression should be changed and send it to the developers but please stop spreading FUD, it just makes you look bad.

From even before day 1

Devs:
Progenitor

Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:

- You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code

- You enjoy providing feedback

- You want to leave your mark on the game

- You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:

- Bugs infuriate you

- You don’t like spoilers

- You can’t stand losing your save

- You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

The devs have clearly shown they are willing to listen and change the game accordingly. It would benefit you more to write directly to them what you think needs changing than rambling on a forum that isnt even the official game forum.

He's discussing the game's issues and is more than welcome to do so right here.

Of course he is, but wouldn't you agree that he would get more out of providing useful feedback directly to the devs instead of preaching to the choir that already knows the game is broken?

The tutorial is so freaking tedious. I want to start playing the game.

The Penguin UFO part is so damn hard. I have all silver armor but they still can kill me in like 3 shots. Its so hard to hit the UFO without getting hit. I tried to box it in when it dive bombs but its so freaking quick that its nearly impossible to do it.

I've had to craft that stupid distress beacon 4 times now, because for whatever reason it gets destroyed as soon as the UFO appears. So if you loose you have to start over again. Ugh.

I think I've spent at least 5 hours trying to beat these friggin penguins now.

Nothing You bolded describe what i'm talking about. Its really that hard to read few sentences in my post?
Its not my first real beta!

And having small team does not change a thing. Tons of game were made by small teams, like Path of Exile for example, much more complicated game and yet they handled beta much, much better.
--------------

Does people really are so blind at defending everything about their game in likings? Its messed up and should be noted as big fail from Chuckelfish.

The only thing Chucklefish did wrong was to label this phase of the beta as beta, because its more of an alpha. But anyone paying attention already knew that going in.

And what do you mean none of what I bolded describes what youre talking about? You're bitching about the game being unbalanced and broken, and it says right there where I bolded the game will be BROKEN and there will be SWEEPING CHANGES. That's exactly what were getting too.

And like hell having a small team doesn't matter. And GGG is actually quite bigger than Chucklefish.

What they need to do ASAP is letting people stick the inventory somewhere instead of appearing over your character all the time.

UGH

ugh, tell me about it! That's the first thing I reported along with been able to bind keys. I also mentioned if it was somehow possible to make an auto run button like in MMOs. As someone that loves to travel to different planets, I love exploring the surface but my hand starts to cramp up after pressing A for a while.

UGH

It's weird how sometimes when I stick it in the bottom corner of the screen, it'll keep coming up in that spot. But then it starts going back to the center of the screen again on its own.

I scanned a wheat seed in the 3D printer but all it did was delete the seed from my inventory and won't actually let me print more.

If something has a value of 0 you can't print it. Though I don't believe it's supposed to delete the object (it didn't when I tried it).

Wheat is easy enough to get anyway. When you plant wheat some will drop a seed and some wheat to use in baking, others will drop two seeds and some plant fiber. Wheat grows super fast, so you'll always have plenty of seeds and bread (I have hundreds of wheat seeds).

Some thoughts:

- placing stuff should be possible even when you close your inventory
- things you collect should not just disappear if your inventory is full
- some kind of planet coordinate log system to save planets and coordinates would be very useful, maybe a digital notebook where you can take your own notes?

Agree on all of this. I brought up the last one as well. The universe is just so damn huge it would be great to have a log of where you've been and even leave notes about places. Like "Found a temple here" or "Heavily fortified base here."

Decided to finally play around with decorating my ship.

Updated the OP, as it seems some people need still help understanding the state of the game.

It'd also be nice if, even without being in a group, it indicated a planet someone is playing on in multiplayer (and optionally, allow you to turn it off if you want to be invisible).

I'm kind of keeping a notepad file with comments like these open when I play, I'll probably post them all at some point in the future on their official forums, which as Agkel pointed out is the absolute best place to provide feedback: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?forums/beta-discussion.100/

mmk got everything stored on SP planet
so if its just a char wipe i can insta go to beta sector

You have a second Star Map saved? Otherwise you can't get to the Beta sector.

In preperation for the character wipe I spent my time today gathering materials and setting up a home base. Found a great little system with three Forest Planets all lined up, levels 1, 3 and 6. Built myself a pretty nice little place and filled it with everything I could find.

So far I've got a few K of wood and cobblestone and a lot of other building materials. Raided a number of settlements so I'm flush with Apex furniture. But my biggest haul was ores. I've got several hundred bars of Iron, Copper, Steel and Silver and a few dozen bars of Gold and Platinum.

Come wipe if everything is still intact, my new character will have a pretty easy go of it. Hardest part will be getting the 300 wood/coal to fuel my ship to get there.

I'm loving how modular this game is. Figured I'd take this "I don't want to play because of a possible wipe" time to poke around more. I'd bet on someone building a proper editor for it all. It's kind of surprising that the devs themselves haven't already done this. Was able to put in axes past stone, up to gold. It doesn't seem possible to increase the "damage" they do to trees, but they can have faster swing speeds at least.

I've been hacking my way around the files a bit too - it definitely looks like there's a lot of potential. Reminds me of Myth 2 where you can make custom projectiles that launch other projectiles (using the nail bomb grenade launcher as an example, have that launch a series of cluster bombs, chickens etc). Fun times. I gave the
rocket launcher
a 20 block destruction radius for rapid exploration by copying some properties from the bomb explosion. I'm not taking that character anywhere near multiplayer, lol.

The biome definitions help answer some questions about why certain ores are so hard to find. You can't just hop on a max rank world and get better chances of everything, the same chances just shift to a higher tier material.

The
Butterfly Bubble
tech is so incredibly overpowered and amazing.

I had to laugh when I ran into that one. Its only real competitor is
Bubble Boost, which is faster but doesn't give the invulnerability
.

There are some cool things in the files for Augments (those extra gear slots) which aren't in the game yet. Looking forward to those.

That's a great idea. I should do that but first I need to take some time to read through what they have in the game and what they have planned so as to not suggest things they already are working on.

As well as bugs, though I really haven't run into any other than just now using my 3D Printer found it just eats my stuff and doesn't register them. Everything else has been pretty smooth sailing.

Decided to try my hand at making hair mods! This is the first one I've made as a test. Probably doesn't work well with some helmets though. Also, wish I could get hair to fall over the shoulder (but would need to have hair with several layers I guess).

Nice! Maybe post that one on reddit.com/r/starbound, the devs are pretty active there. Good idea with the layering.

I put up a little video showing some simple mass destruction with a modified weapon.

http://youtu.be/lHutyFvxpzg (Spoilers! Has endgame avian armour and one of the best travel techs)

Its recommended you do that, if you want to keep your stuff.

But not guaranteed, we don't know what will happen with 100% certainty, only that characters will probably be wiped. Planets might go too, but we don't know. Hopefully they tell us before the update.

no but i have enough mats to make it again
i have the anvil needed for it saved

Thanks! Though I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement layering.

Trying to keep the Asian theme the Hylotl have.

Yeah I use that tech most of the time now, really good for exploring the surface of planets fast. Once you get to
Impervium tier armor(rubium+coal)
, which I believe is the last tier atm(?), your energy regen is so ridiculous you can use that tech non-stop and never run out of energy. Makes it a lot easier to get around. I do wish you could use multiple techs at once without having to select them in your inventory.

The tiers are pretty broken at the moment though, so I'm interested to see the new system and how it works out. Hopefully they fix the platinum issue, it makes it almost impossible to progress past tier 3 without glitching the boss. And the final upgrades
, being craftable tech upgrades,
are pretty easy to rush through without doing any of the upgrading in between.

Might start completely fresh when the wipe happens and see what the new progression is like, hopefully being slightly better, it'll make it a bit more interesting than having to search forums to find out platinum doesn't spawn until you get into the sector AFTER you need it.

I'm assuming that the tier upgrade items are there because the later sectors/bosses/unique summon items aren't done. They seem like they're obvious debug items because they don't go away after use.

Hopefully rubium placement gets reworked majorly, I was hip-deep in that before I saw my first cerulium.

So, changing item properties, and adjusting the way enemy damage/defense/difficulty scaling works means that my cobblestone needs to be changed and wiped? What?

This does not bode well for future updates if this is the system they have in place. I should come back to a character with changed weapons and armor etc. in the best case scenario, and no weapons and armor (but still a pick and cooked meat and things) in the worst.

I guess we'll see what they do.

What I don't like is that ore such as Cerulium is heavily dependent on the level of planet you are on.

Not sure how it will work in the new system, but as someone posted earlier, this guide helps explain why some things are so hard to find:

If you aren't on a lvl 34/35 planet looking for Cerulium, then you are really wasting your time. I hope things like that are more obvious in the ore rebalance.

I found a tiny robot house guarded by two robots and found a guitar inside. And proceeded to jam after stealing it(literally it plays a song). This game is great.
