Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

What I don't like is that ore such as Cerulium is heavily dependent on the level of planet you are on.

Not sure how it will work in the new system, but as someone posted earlier, this guide helps explain why some things are so hard to find:

If you aren't on a lvl 34/35 planet looking for Cerulium, then you are really wasting your time. I hope things like that are more obvious in the ore rebalance.

That would definitely do it. Hopefully when they get all 10 sectors in we'll have an entire sector that's cerulium-heavy, and so on.

I found a tiny robot house guarded by two robots and found a guitar inside. And proceeded to jam after stealing it(literally it plays a song). This game is great.

You can download .abc files (thefatlute.eu is a good place to look) and put them in the songs folder to play custom tracks. One of their "Random Weekend Projects" one of their programmers implemented.

Will this play over the server or only locally?

Weapons so far are a little disappointing as they seem to suffer from Borderlands syndrome. Hunting for lvl 40 weapons and everything is basically simple minor stat adjustments that ultimately mean nothing. Looking forward to how this will improve in the patch.

Are there things like laser guns in the game? I've only been able to find standard guns.

OKAY, so I finally got a chance to play this game today, for about eight hours? Yeah, that's eight hours straight by the way...

Starbound is damn fun. I'm not even off of my starting planet yet. Took me forever to walk all the way around it, either my starting planet is just huge or these are very big maps. Had a few neat encounters on the surface: two different merchants, three bandit camps, and a huge temple with gun toting avians. Also found some sewage treasure room, didn't realize that the
green goo on the floor was poisonous
, lol. Also dug down a good ways, tunneled into a huge empty cavern with a sand floor and pixel canisters all over the place.

So I died a lot, mined a lot, collected a lot of nice booty and treasure, and I'm not even off of my Level 1 starter planet.

This game is going to eat up all of my free time, I can just see it now...

Plays over the server, somebody was on the GAF server jamming some videogame tunes the other night.

Yeah, I actually found one but it was terrible (like 1 damage per shot) so I ended up trashing it. They have a little green laser beam icon in place of flame / skull / whatever.
Edit: Dropped off one of the little apex robots that generate a shield.

Can you actually explain how to do this?

Go to the site, copy and paste the data (from like :X1 down) and paste it into a notepad document, saving it with the song title. Put it in the Program Files > Steam > Steamapps > Common > Starbound > Assets > Songs directory. Then when you go to play an instrument, the song will appear in your list.

The hair mods I have so far. Not sure that these work 100% since I haven't been able to test each of them with various head gear in the game. You can choose them in the character creation screen and they seem to work fine in game.

Link for them if you want to try them out. Installation is pretty easy (I'm not a programmer though I do have experience programming, but it was easy enough to figure out how to get these working). But I'm not sure if I wrote the installation directions in a way that actually makes sense.

Also, I noticed that some hair files have normal versions and climbing versions, but not all. Has climbing even been implemented in the game yet? I have not seen it, if so.

Make a text files in the starbound install location in assests> songs

Make sure that the extension is renamed to .abc

You can find abc songs or convert midis into abc (I done many like highway to hell) with maestro.

I've heard multiplayer's been crashing at the beginning of the beta.

Maybe one or two. Seems more stable than modded MC honestly.

"Princess Leia" lily pad hairbuns. (Perfect for space exploration!)

*making Florans look even more deceptively adorable*

http://starbounder.org seems to be the best so far.

Also, moons have no atmosphere, so avoid them until you have a space suit.

It's not the atmosphere, it's the cold. Not all of them are cold, either, it's just more common than a normal planet; best bet is to bring two campfires and gradually leapfrog downward until you get to a lower layer with normal temps.

So when this update hits all my save files will be deleted?

Characters will probably be wiped. You may be able to keep your stuff if you stored it on a planet, just remember the name and coordinates. Though there might be a chance of everything being wiped. So just play around until the patch hits.

I hope they add some new content in this next patch outside of balance and bug fixes. Pickaxes are so boring man.

The tutorial is so freaking tedious. I want to start playing the game.

The Penguin UFO part is so damn hard. I have all silver armor but they still can kill me in like 3 shots. Its so hard to hit the UFO without getting hit. I tried to box it in when it dive bombs but its so freaking quick that its nearly impossible to do it.

I've had to craft that stupid distress beacon 4 times now, because for whatever reason it gets destroyed as soon as the UFO appears. So if you loose you have to start over again. Ugh.

I think I've spent at least 5 hours trying to beat these friggin penguins now.

I'm in the exact same boat, man. Completely wrecked every time. Nothing I've made seems to do anything.

Are ocean planets in the game yet? I remember seeing one. It would be cool to get a deep sea vehicle and visit Hylotl colonies

Trolling the files now since there isn't much else to do in end game.

Copper->Diamond pickaxe damage is only a 1.1->2.7 improvement. Shows how disappointing it is for things like Obsidian still taking forever.

Time to have some fun.

Saved and quit, when I loaded back into the game it turned out that my game actually didn't save.

Lost some pretty cool items, including my keyboard.

:(

I've port forwarded and everything yet none of my friends can connect to my server :(

Whhhhhy is multiplayer so shit?

Port forwarded 21025 UDP and TCP, never had any issues.

What's this about a wipe?

Some time tomorrow, maybe later, a large update will completely change planet levels, enemy levels and how weapons deal damage, no more about penetration, and will result in characters being wiped. The assumption is though that the universe well stay intact so if you put all your stuff on a planet and write down its location it well be there for your new character post patch/wipe.

Penguins aint shit

Ha, that's similar to my tactic for some of the enemies that were one-shoting me. There were fire breathing lizard creatures deep underground and a pesky Glitch guard. I encase them in cinder blocks and then hit them from outside with my trust fire axe or shoot them through a gap with my arrow

I see. Let's hope so, does the seed for your planet change every time you do something different to it?

Aren't the saves all local? How would they still be around if this update wipes everything

Well shit. I go out of town and there is a character wipe the next day. I have all my good stuff on my character. I'm screwed, so I'll probably just start over when I get back.

An awesome person just gifted me this game on Steam. So far I like it more than Terraria, it's good to have actual quest goals and whatnot. Iron ore seems quite hard to find in any sizeable quantity though.

Is there any way to get a grappling hook like in terraria?
It's so weird playing this game and trying to mine without being able to stick to walls.
