Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

How was he always a possibility when he was never playable?

I was pleasantly surprised, because I didn't hear about the boxart leak.

why are people angry about it?

Because people expected more. Like a new Zelda, or Smash Bros footage. GAF hype got the best of people.

There haven't been any real big megatons from this show honestly, it's been pretty laid back. I'm not even that disappointed by Nintendo's appearance.

Cranky gets around. You see that cane action?

Just so you guys know where we're at, here's how long it's taken for the characters to be announced:

Sonic - 5 days
Toon Link - 14 days
Luigi - 26 days
Pikmin & Olimar - 31 days
Monday, December 9 - 32 days
Peach - 36 days
Marth - 37 days

If we don't get a character by Friday then we'll have gone the longest we ever have without a new reveal. My expectations are always low or even nonexistent, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not anticipating a character next week.

I actually enjoyed the Cranky Kong reveal. I'm a bit biased since DKCR may be my favorite 2D platformer of all time, but nonetheless I don't think people should be crucifying Nintendo over this since the new reveals for VGA's this year were heavily scaled down in "megaton" status compared to those in year's past.

Anyway back to Smash, yeah I'm still going with Zelda for this month. I wish we would get 2 characters per month like September, but that month was the only of its kind so I'm not really expecting any big Smash announcements until the first big Nintendo Direct of next year.

This would be the best way to pace the newcomer reveals:

December Direct - newcomer 4
February Direct - newcomer 5
April Direct - newcomer 6
June Direct (E3) - newcomer 7 (guest character)
August Direct - newcomer 8
September/October Smash Bros. Direct (big pre-release marketing push) - newcomer 9

I'm quite curious to see what kind of style they're going to use for Zelda. As much as I love the Twilight Princess style, the veteran character designs have been nothing short of amazing in my opinion.

I thought the Direct would be in January than December
The Wii U's an absolute disaster. The logical approach would be to try and get as many people excited about the system before Christmas as possible, but this is Nintendo, and they rarely do what's expected. You might be right.

Nintendo Directs reach a small audience and they've got nothing else to announce for the immediate future. There's little to gain from a December direct that more conventional marketing wouldn't do better.

So no new direct until next E3 it is!

The Nintendo Directs alone aren't huge, but the news/footage makes its way to other outlets the same way traditional info drops do. Nintendo Directs are simply a dispersal method, and quite honestly, they're the most marketing Nintendo's ever done in its history.

The January Direct did wonders for the Wii U, right?

Directs aren't done in panic outside of that one January Nintendo Direct. They're only press releases with videos and stuff.

I hope we get a newcomer soon.

Yeah, I hope so too, but I'm actually wondering just how many newcomers will be in this one...

Brawl had like 16 new characters, yet I've not really thought about Smash 4 getting much more than what we've already seen. Is there any official comment on the number of new characters, or what to expect?

Uh, what? Nintendo's done tons of big marketing pushes in the past. The Wii Would Like To Play campaign pushed more units than any Nintendo Direct announcements could.

December direct seems possible, and I kind of have faith it has some sort of smash related info, even if its only a little. I am willing to bet that next week we are getting a character....I think.

Before they throw out another newcomer they at least need to show Zelda, Yoshi and another Brawl veteran like Wario or someone else the way the updates are coming, anyway.

"Marketing" might not be the best word for me to use even though it still applies. I'm not talking about TV commercials. For the most part, Nintendo used to announce a game and then sit on it until its release. They were notoriously hands-off compared to the other major publishers. With Nintendo Direct and Iwata Asks they're at least attempting to let us in on more than they normally would.

This still happens, all the time. Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, X, Yarn Yoshi... all of them revealed months ago and not a word on any of them until we're an inch away from release.

I think you're right, Sakurai has been pretty consistent with a one character a month reveal so far.

Alright I'll make the prediction of character reveal next friday. I haven't been keeping track but the past couple of fridays have been more exciting that luigi sniffing marth, right?
